Stumbled on this site last night from Facebook. There is a video of the strip in 1975. It is fascinating and surprisingly good quality. My first visit was in 2000 so amazing the difference in 25 years and now 20 years after that.

That is so cool, thanks for posting. Wouldn't it be great if you could really go back in a time machine?

Of course, the original The Gambler was made in 1974, so there's some good scenes in that. James Caan doubling on 18 and spiking a 3. Single deck, and dealer peaks, no peaking thing. Dealer tells.

Good post!

Looking at that makes me think the early 90's was some of the best times to be in Vegas. Things were pretty built out and great values were everywhere. Maybe Vegas jumped the shark when they built the Canopy over Fremont.

old grade B movies are great and one episode of Vegas recreated the exterior sign on a casino showing the low roller rates for the day.
25 cent crap games as well as an equally staggering minimum bet for 21.

Because as much as Vegas is in the middle of nowhere now, it was REALLY in the middle of nowhere back then...!

Maybe it was a good way to generate cash flow on real estate investments at the time.

I didn't realize there was a Sambo's on the strip.

I have some old home videos/film from the '60's of someone's Vegas trip. I'll see if I can find it this week and post it up somehow.

Didn't they all get turned into Denny's?

I went to what I believe is the first and last Sambo's in Santa Barbara a few years ago.

Today's Kismet (highlight my own):

Quote: The Ocala Kitchen

Sambo’s was a restaurant started in 1957 by Sam Battistone, Sr. and Newell Bohnett. who commonly were referred to as Sam and Bo. Though the name was taken from portions of the names of its founders, the chain soon found itself associated with The Story of Little Black Sambo. Battistone, Sr. and Bohnett capitalized on the coincidence by decorating the walls of the restaurants with scenes from the book, including a dark-skinned boy, tigers, and a pale, magical unicycle-riding man called "The Treefriend."

I kind of miss all those motels on the Strip nestled between the big resorts--the rich and not so rich elbow to elbow. They looked tacky during the day (Vegas being Vegas) but, to be fair, the big resorts (before they were pyramids and castles and Eiffel towers) weren't all that impressive in the sunlight either.

At night, however, all the Vegasy motel signs turned on and accentuated the glitz of of the big casino Marquees. I suppose it's all those old school flashing lights I really miss. Today it's mostly jumbotrons and light tubes. Pretty cool, but yesteryear had the ultimate eye candy.
Have you tried 22 tonight? I said 22.

I have thought many times how much I would have loved to see Las Vegas in the 80`s or earlier. My first time in Vegas was sadly in 2013.

I was thinking about it today and my first time was either 1992 or 1993. Either way it was before the canopy on Fremont went up. Maybe because I was a noob it just seemed to be a more larger than life place than today.

I didn't film it.

It was transferred from an old 8mm film reel I found in an antique store years ago.

There's also footage of Hoover Dam and the Grand Canyon, but this was the only Vegas stuff.

It's surprisingly well done. The camera is rock solid in a moving vehicle, and the exposure at night is excellent. I wonder if it is a commercially produced souvenir reel? Are there shots of people posing in front of signs and other such common tourist activities in the other footage?
