I haven't really been paying much attention to this, but if they really have commitments from 172 Electoral Votes, perhaps its time I do. A couple more populous states join in and it is a game changer.

Liberal Dream. Note it is a token effort, only after the decision is made.

It's surprising that you now consider states rights to be the liberal position.

The forefathers put in an electoral college for a reason. Trying to work the system to change it to a popular vote based victor is only something a hurt feelings liberal would try and do.

The Founding Fathers gave each state an electorate and allowed them to use it however they see fit. Anything else would be a violation of the 10th Amendment written by our Founding Fathers. Of course wanting to tear up the constitution has become very popular among some people.

Then why did Trump say he wanted to change from the EC to popular vote the other day?

Trump wants a popular vote system.

And let's see how many "hurt feelings conservatives" come crawling out of the woodwork the next time a liberal wins the electoral but loses the popular.

Boz.

WARNING.

You've crossed the line from sarcasm and generalities into trolling Bill personally. I recognize this as a running argument from other threads, and that Bill can defend himself, but back off from this personalization. Thank you.

I have been following the National Popular Vote Compact for years. One thing it doesn't say is, who decides who the popular vote winner is. If it is left up to each state's secretary of state to "certify" popular vote totals, what stops a state from passing a law saying, in effect, that the only "official" vote results released from that state in a Presidential election prior to January 21 are (a) the total number of votes cast, and (b) the names of the persons receiving the most votes for President and Vice-President? Remember, nothing in the Compact can be forced upon the states that are not members.

I'd imagine that once they had 271 votes committed, they would establish a uniform standard for the states in the compact. Without their 271 votes, there is no winner.
Wasn't it only a year or so ago that Mark Levine and the right were calling for a Constitutional Amendment to fix the popular vote thing?
I haven't been following this but plan on doing some catch up.

Trump wants a popular vote system..

Who cares what Trump wants, he can change
nothing. Why is it taking so long for people
to realize that what Trump says is often not
what he means. He plays people, he's a
master at it. He enjoys making fools out
of people, he's a bully. I've known guys
like him. They delight in making you look
like an idiot so they can feel good about
themselves.

Don't get me wrong, I like him as president.
As a person, he sucks. You can never get
close to a man like him, but he's good to
have as a rich friend. He always has to be
right, he always has to win. He's what they
used to call a boor.

So what. I don't have to deal with him
personally. I didn't
like Kennedy or Nixon or Carter or Clinton
or Bush as people either. We don't elect
people president to be our new best friend.
We want them to do a good job.

I could care less that Trump has a trophy wife,
has had sex with a porn star, lies a lot (all
presidents do that) has a huge ego, and is
probably a douche to have at the Thanksgiving
table. All I care about is he does his job,
and he seems to be doing that in spades.

I do not see it as he likes making fools of people. I see it as he is a master of the head fake and letting people make fools of themselves. Look at the "maybe Russia can tell us" thing in the debate. Or the "I'll get back to you" on the results. Liberals everywhere made jerks out of themselves going nuts. Neither would happen, but he got them off-message for days and days. Meanwhile, he moved the ball down the field.

As to the compact, it is very old news. Started when Algore lost. Why would a state give up their position and attention is beyond me. Just a liberal end-run around things. You can bet the way fate works, it will backfire, and the liberals will sue to say it is not constitutional, violates equal-protection, and whatever else they can come up with. Like in MA when they changed the law to let a liberal governor pick a Senate replacement, then rushed to make a new law so a GOP governor could not.

Because he's a phony.

Mark Levine is way off. Hardly a conservative nor constitutionalist, he is big on pushing for Article V and a constitutional convention, which will be a total disaster and ultimately the end of our republic. If you weren't such an unobjective liberal you might recognize the flaws in Mark Levine's "conservatism".
