My Brother, my Mother, my Partner and I visited the Nevada Partnership for homeless youth shelter and the Shannon West homeless youth shelter today, making a donation to each shelter and distributed Walmart gift cards to the nearly 100 homeless youth. We got to talk with a number of these "kids' and hear their stories and wish them a Merry Christmas.

My partner and I do this regularly, but this was the first such visit for my Brother and Mother. My Brother who doesn't share my charitable enthusiasm, seemed to really get in the spirit of things which made it all the more enjoyable for me. After our stop at Shannon West, the four of us headed up the street to Jerry's Nugget for lunch at one of my favorite places, Jerry's Famous Coffee Shop (I wonder just how famous it really is :/ ), to complete an enjoyable Christmas Eve Day outing.

I hope this isn't against the rules of the site, but for anyone looking to do a little last minute giving.....The Nevada Partnership for Homeless Youth (Shirley Street, just off Tropicana, a mile east of the strip, near UNLV) ALWAYS appreciates your donations, whether monetary or blankets, or lightly used clothing and/or sneakers.

Wishing all a Merry Christmas or Happy Holiday or whatever is politically correct.

I didn't do any good deeds today. As a matter of fact, I just flipped off a family of four that cut me off on my drive home from the liquor store. Oh well.

I'm spending a quiet night at home with my son and a bottle of Jameson. We're planing to do what we do every Christmas Eve- watch the ultimate Christmas double feature- Christmas Vacation, followed by Bad Santa. My wife and daughter are skipping movie night and going to a party instead.

Merry Christmas everyone.

As I came out of Walmart the bell ringer
was right there, so I dug in my pocket
and all I had were four $1 casino chips
from yesterday. I asked if I could put them
in the pot and was told 'that would be
in really bad taste, don't you think?'
Screw you too, I said, and put them back

I feel warm and fuzzy at my attempt at

Ya Know, I might just go for a viewing of Christmas Vacation. I haven't run across it yet this season. AMC has been running White Christmas and Scrooged and several versions of miracle on 34th street almost every day, and I have caught most of them at some point this season, but no Christmas Vacation, which is one of my favs. With 600 channels of TV viewing, I am sort of opposed to paying extra to watch a movie, but I may make an exception. Good call...HowMany.

Interesting. I'll bet that "bad taste" opinion was that of the individual ringing the bell and not that of the Salvation Army. Here in Vegas, a number of charitable organizations have people requesting donations both on the strip and on Fremont Street. I am pretty sure they would welcome casino chips.

BUT, even so. Why would that make you so mad that you both changed your mind about giving and wanted to curse out that person. That seems kind of irrational.

I guess you are making light of me and that's ok. :) It DOES feel good to give back some. Like most people who do so, the act of giving probably benefits myself more than those that I think I am "helping". :/

I hear ya. It is easy to over-react. A few years ago, I bought bus tickets for 4 young people at the homeless shelter that I volunteer at, so they could go 'home' (to various parts of the country), as all had expressed a desire to do so. I bought non-refundable so they couldn't be cashed in. The following week two of the four were still in Vegas and never left. They either somehow sold their ticket, or just didn't use it. Several weeks later, the third who did go home was back in Vegas, and in the homeless shelter. The fourth, I never saw again.

At first, I was a little annoyed, especially with the first two. I felt betrayed. But after I got over that, I realized I provided all 4 with an opportunity. What they chose to do with it, is on them. I can't be mad about that. I can only feel satisfaction that I provided an opportunity.

People like that have a chump mentality.
To them you're a chump because you
gave them something, which they think
they deserve because you have everything
and they have nothing. I learned about it

You are taking these things personally. You can't take them so personally. There are bad people. There are good people. If you decide to help or do something for someone, there are some that are appreciative and some that aren't. It's a mixed bag, just like everything else.

Out of curiosity, what did "dealing with the homeless in Santa Barbara" entail?

People who are homeless for longer than
temporary adopt the universal mindset
of 'us against them'. They become predatory,
and we're the prey. They want what we have,
and say thanks when we give it to them, but
they also severely resent us because they blame
us for the position they're in.

I was on the lower end of State St in SB, that's
close to the beach and where all the homeless
hang out. When they got some money, they
would come into the bar and I knew some of
them for years. The homeless I've seen in Vegas
are carbon copies of the guys I knew. It's the
same 'we hate you but we need you' mentality.

Sitting in the Florida Keys tipping bartenders for all the hard work they do. Amazing what an extra $20 on top of a 20% tip means to many. Trust me, I'm no angel but I am at a place in life where I can do this and I hope I can do the same the rest of my life.

Best wishes to all! And may everyone find their personal Christmas.

Get used to that if you do charity. It just comes with the territory, you have to expect people to try to game the system. When you aren't dealing with the cream of society, well, you aren't dealing with the cream of society.

I'm disappointed because netflix didn't ship the one flick I wanted to watch on xmas eve: "A Christmas Horror Story."

Haven't seen it, but with William Shatner, infectious elves, a demon called Krampus and a mean, crazed santa, who could ask for more?

This is christmas for the new millenium.

Big winds last night, power outages for 100K
people in MI. Just behind me there are a
bunch of McMansion's and power has been
out for 24 hours.

I just took the dog out and saw a line of at least
5 people with 5 gallon buckets coming up from
the creek. I'm sure they live to the west of me and
need water for toilet flushing. Nothing they'd
rather be doing on Xmas eve. They were on
my property and my Xmas gift was I didn't
shoot the for trespassing. They had a Hummer,

What, not watching the A Christmas Story marathon?

Great movie IMO. Normally I don't like watching movies more than once but I'll watch this one every few years. My GF has not seen It's a Wonderful Life. Shes preparing dinner and we will watch that tonight.

We didn't prepare for Christmas this year (not even gifts, other than some online Black Friday stuff)because different stuff just kept popping up. Normally we have a small tree with gifts and make some different kind of bird like duck, goose, Chicken for dinner.

Originally we planned on going to Washington state to visit my parents, but that got scratched off the list.
We will just have to make up for it next year.

Merry Christmas to everyone.

Which is why I try to help those working. I know the ups and downs of service jobs and a couple extra bucks can really make someone's day.

But to each his own and there are plenty of homeless trying to better their situation, it's just easier to see them as making the choice, which most didn't.

I believe that means they raised $$ to fund the movie. Wriiten, directed & produced by others...I wouldn't call it a Coen Brothers movie...it doesn't have their creativity all over it like "No Country for Old Men"...just their $$'s.

When you executive produce something,
it has a hell of as lot more of your input
than just $$. You get a say in everything,
from the script to the direction. When
they showed TV ads for it they said 'from
the Coen Brothers'. Or 'a Coen brothers
film'. Just like the ads for Cowboys and Aliens
said 'from Steven Spielberg' and all he did
was executive produce.

Like I said, it has Coen's fingerprints all
over it, they even redid the script, which
is basically the movie. And it ended up
being what they intended. I guarantee
BS 2 will be a flop, Billy Bob acting this
way in a sequel just won't cut it.

The director, Zwigoff, had the final say on the script as directors usually do. He had a rocky relationship with Coen brothers, overrode them on their suggestions about casting the Elf. Then the Coens walked away from the film after the heated argument with the Weinsteins, the Co-Executive Producers....which doesn't make it a Weinstein film either!

Nope, definitely a "Coen Brothers" movie, so similar to their other great movies like Fargo, The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men...wait, they wrote and directed those films...and won Academy Awards for two them....hmm, well its all really the same anyway, the TV said so.
