How long is it from VEGAS to LA ? can you make it in 4 hrs?

Got my rental car and I tried to take in something new each trip to Vegas....a day trip to see Hollywood and take in the LA KINGS Edmonton Oilers hockey on Tuesday night

Stub Hub has almost 1800 tickets available so that will not be a issue

And the weather expected in the LA area will not be a issue either

It's hard to say. 4 hours would be if you went crazy fast down the 15 coming in. However depending on time of day, you have traffic and other variables to deal with. Staples Center is in the heart of downtown so it's a bit of a mess no matter how you slice it. I would say 5-6 hours is a more realistic estimation.

A few years ago we went to LA from LV and would have made it in just over 4 hours. I drive 5 over speed limit so I don't drive fast. However, like I said, WOULD have made it in 4 hours except we got crushed in traffic on one of the highways. I think it was the 605 but maybe the 10. I can't remember, but at any rate it took us around 5 hours.

It would be a whole day trip if i go... say 7 or 8 in the morning take in the area for 5 or 6 hrs before finding my way to the game

it can't be worse than Toronto at rush hour

BTW what is the speed limit along that route?

We did something similar. Hopefully you would get a hotel room for the night before driving back.

We left Vegas at 8am and drove to Temecula. We stopped in Palm Springs for the tram into the mountains, outlets, and a few casinos. We did a hot air balloon ride over wine country in the morning and then drove back to Vegas. I love doing those quicky little trips.

If you have never been to LA you should do Hollywood and Santa Monica Pier.

When you get to San Bernardino or so, you should stop in a Juan Pollo. Still probably one of the best chickens I have had. When you get to LA you obviously have all the landmarks there to choose from.

You could do four hours if you drove fast, like 75 MPH, made no long stops, and drove in the middle of the night to avoid traffic.

LA Traffic makes Toronto look pretty tame. It's not really the number of cars involved, its the selfish disregard for others that is the differentiating factor. Canadians are nice people, while LA drivers are ridiculous pricks.

You can easily make it from Vegas to the LA area in 4 hours. It'll slow a little around Barstow where I40 and I15 run together, and again around San Bernardino as highways converge and descend entering the LA area. I'd guess you could make it onto I10 and be somewhere around Pomona, CA after 4 hours of driving. From there, it's a traffic-dependent 30-120 minutes to get downtown for the game (it's 30 miles...). You've called this a day trip, but are you really planning on driving back to Vegas after the game? You'd get in between 2 and 3am. If that's your plan, keep in mind that there is absolutely NOTHING between Baker, CA and Jean, NV. Not that you'd plan to fail, but the second half of the trek does not offer any fall back options at all.

The speed limit on I15 is 70mph between San Bernardino and the Nevada state line, but it's 55mph for trucks. That creates a frustrating situation where people who want to go 80 and people who want to go 60 want to pass the same truck at the same time. I think the speed limit between San Bernardino and LA is 55mph for all vehicles. I don't think I've ever achieved that speed on that stretch...

"LA" is a relative thing. From downtown? hell no. From the I15/I10 interchange in Rancho Cucamonga? Sure. But you have to be willing to drive 80ish the whole way and be a bit aggressive when navigating truck traffic. And it'd help if the final destination was the M and not the Cannery, too.

I've done it in 2 and a half hours. My buddy was driving and went 100 most of the way. When I drive to Vegas it usually takes me 3.5 hours including 2 stops for gas, food, or just to stretch. Granted I ususally leave after work at 6pm and wouldn't think of going on a Friday (or returning late Sunday for that matter) so I don't hit any traffic.

The speed limit is 70 but realistically there is no reason you can't drive 82 mph most of the way on the 15, and a 250 mile drive going 82 mph will take 3 hours. People will still be flying by you going 90 if you are going 82. From Mandalay Bay to downtown LA is about 260 miles so the wild card is if you stop and how bad the traffic is coming in to LA. I will say that it is a tough drive to make twice in one day, you would be wise to spend the night in Socal. Maybe drive back as far as Victorville and spend the night there so you don't have to deal with traffic in the morning.

I always plan 4 hours for Vegas to L.A. but I also avoid the morning and evening rush hour. I dated a woman their and drove back and forth three times a month.

Is there a speed trap near Baker? I always stopped in Baker to take a snack break... it avoids tickets from those unmarked Baker cars that patrol the freeway near there.

IF there is an agricultural inspection at the California border... as you approach it, say "Rental Car from Vegas". Don't have any fruit in it, homegrown or otherwise. You will be waived right through it but it will slow all traffic down.

The actual driving time will be nothing for me.... just drove a truck from southern Ontario to Alberta 3800km( 2300 miles)of snow covered roads over 4 days and the speed limit for almost 2 days of that drive was 55mph

Driving a car 4 hrs is simple and relaxing compared to the trucks. Long days are nothing to me. Will see how late tonight goes when I get there... might be a Wednesday trip without the hockey game... get to see more of the area if i do that.

Thanks for all the input folks....... off to the bank to exchange some money

I agree 100% on your Toronto vs. LA traffic comment. Doesn't warrant a comparison.

During a weekday I'd plan on a good five hours, but it always seems everyone's always in a hurry to get to Vegas because of anxiety, then they're always in a hurry to get home so they can forget about all the money they just threw away. The trucks are the only ones going the speed limit. I'll go 5-8mph over the limit, but going that "slow" irritates the hell out of just abount everybody. There's no need to speed and risk a ticket or disaster. What's the point, to show off that shiny new car you're paying 72 months for? I drive a car that's speedier than most, and I mostly drive it responsibly.

Safe travels!

Not saying that it's physically impossible, but Vegas to L.A. in 2 1/2 hours seems a little farfetched.

It was nuts. No stops and 100+mph for the vast majority of the driving. We stayed at the stratosphere which was the biggest mistake of the trip.

If you were to leave Vegas say at 9 am planning on getting to LA by 1 or 2 - barring something unforeseen - will you miss most of the traffic?

Am thinking about doing this for the National Championship game - so this would be a monday.

I should be a bit more clear, we were actually coming from Irvine not Los Angeles but it is about the same distance, maybe 10 miles closer. Also this was more than 8 years ago and we did not try to time it accurately so it may well have been 2 hours 45 minutes but it was well under 3 hours. We left at like 9 or 10 pm so zero traffic.

Under three hours to vegas is possible if you start anywhere east of downtown LA, like northern orange county, riverside, ontario, etc. ~240 miles @ 80+ mph. 100mph is doable in stretches.

Speeding ticket will cost you 400 bucks. I once got two in one night.

A few of you fellas need to balance math with reality. It is 270 miles from center Strip to Staples. That does not mean that you will be able to do a steady 70 and make it in 4 hours, or 75-80 in 3 1/2. There is almost always traffic of some kind and delays from the top of Cajon Pass onward coming from LV, or until you clear it going out, unless the trip is made in off hours on a weekday and you are lucky. The speed limit on I-15 is 70. Drive 75 and you are usually okay. 80 is risky, and if 85 and above you are rolling the dice without being inside a casino. LE has eyes in the sky, in case anyone is not aware of this, and many a speeding ticket comes from aircraft radioing a CHP cruiser. LA to LV or back can take 6-8 hours in heavy conditions, 5 in normal. Not often considered is that I-15 along this route is one of the most dangerous stretches of highway in the US, with many crashes and fatalities. Best idea is to slow down, stay in the right lanes, and stop and take one break at one of the rest stops.

This is the best post of all. Really what is the risk/ reward of going 90/hr. Really what is the great reward vs the risk of a 400 dollar ticket and having to go to driving school to keep the points off of your licesne. Or the risk rewatd of getting in an accident.

the reward is getting to LV 45 min earlly. Really? Is the world ending. Is this the last time on earth to gamble? Clains of drive times are like claims of phone plans. Whatever your plan..there is always someone claiming they have a better one........to the point where one upsmanship has a person claiming that the phone company pays them for making calls. The same with drive times...there is always someone claiming they made it in an impossible short period of time.

But then when you really look at it..they didnt start to time it until they were free and clear on 1-15. Its not door to door from their home to the casino.

technically you can drive to LV, and ave your car enter LV, and still not park your car at the hotel for another 20-30 min. But you can claim that you hit LV 20-30 min before you park. So what good is that.

Its all when you start the clock and stop the clock
