I used to a huge Mad magazine fan back in the day. 60's to 70's
What a great magazine, no ads, just the funny stuff.
I would read a magazine, set it aside, come back couple months later read it again.
Its the only magazine you read over and over and still chuckle.

Anyway was doing my regular grocery shopping today and right among all the magazines at the checkout counter, Mad Magazine. "Special Collectors Edition Mad Picks" with of course Alfred on the front and picking his nose. 1st time I've seen Mad at the grocery checkout , instantly bought it.
About to dive in and chuckle all morning.

Was at a convention this summer in Tampa called Metrocon. It was all about anime and manga with a lot of cosplay, people dressed up as their favorite characters. Saw a couple dressed as Spy vs Spy from Mad magazine. Ahh, brings back memories. Here's a picture I took.

Me, too, terapined! Our Uncle Pat insisted on us having a subscription for Christmas every year from about 1964; I so wish we still had those early issues. I liked Spy v. Spy, the fold-ins, and the margin cartoons the best, along with some of the better tv/movie satires. "Star Blechh"; "Mission: Improbable", etc. etc.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

I've got a box of old Mads from the seventies. Remind me to show them to you on your next Vegas visit.

Loved that dumb magazine.

My favorite was a back cover. Shortly after Nixon got reelected, Esso changed their name to Exxon.

The back cover had a photo of the White House, with an Exxon sign, but the name in the sign was "Nixxon".

The caption was, "But it's still the same old gas."

It was always a conundrum whether to keep the magazine in top condition or fold the back page in half to see the hidden picture.

I remember in the mid 80s I was walking by a yard sale and got a bunch of mad books for 10 cents each. I guess they were made in the 60s and were compilations for people like Don Martin. I wish I still had those. Collected a lot in the 80s but all were sold without my knowledge just like all my Star Wars toys :(

When cleaning out old stuff getting ready to move to Vegas, I found a MAD from 1985. Still made me laugh today.

Every issue through the end of 2005, plus the inserts from the special editions (which otherwise include stuff from earlier issues), is available on DVD-ROM. This is not the earlier 4-disc CD-ROM version, that was in some proprietary format; every issue in this release is a PDF. Titled "Absolutely MAD!", Amazon currently has it for $60.

(Well, almost every article - there were seven from before 1965 that they could not reprint, probably because the material was not original to MAD; for example, one article was pretty much Andy Griffith's "What it Was, Was Football!" routine with drawings.)

I started reading Mad in 1958 and read it all
thru the early 60's. It was tricky because
parents really frowned on it then, some of the
content was questionable. I loved it, I read
them over and over.

I came across half a dozen Mad paperbacks
recently, where they took the best of the
mag and put it in book form. Early to mid
60's. The humor is really dated and I see why
it was so appealing to me. I was a kid and
it's written for kids, duh.

Wizard, do we need to call TCL so you can be on the Hoarder show. Between magazines from the 70s and discarded pictures I am starting to wonder ;-)
Expect the worst and you will never be disappointed. I AM NOT PART OF GWAE RADIO SHOW

Shades of Nanny Dickering !

Used to read Mad in 1955 on streetcar, Back of magazine was black and white design to look like a composition notebook to fool the teachers. LOL

1955 was the year Brooklyn Dodger finally beat the Yankees and became world champions.

YEAH, the BUMS were in Brooklyn back then.

I've got a respectable Mad collection, too. My oldest issue is from 1958. I've also got a decent baseball card collection, but my Mad collection means much more to me.
