Does your spouse understand basic gambling theory? Do they play basic strategy or have no clue at table games. Do they play video poker or crazy penny slots?

My wife used to work at Las Vegas Advisor so she understands advantage play and basic strategy, but if she goes gambling with me all of my advantage is usually eaten up by her play at the penny slots. If I can keep her at the blackjack table or at certain video poker games then I am fine. Sadly, she doesn't enjoy those so she always wants to try the newest crazy slots (usually 86%).
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

Hehe.. if she's having a good time, and not losing your RV betting "22", maybe it's okay. In comparison, how much would you "lose" paying for her spa, shopping, or Cirque show ticket?

Penny slots and she breaks even every time! Who knew? In fairness she will play blackjack with me if I need a partner for a special circumstance and she does know basic strategy. She's not thrilled about it because she thinks I ask only when I'm "up to something."

Not married but I have made observations. Generally speaking women are less interested in learning more complex games and ap strategy. They have the attitude that the casino is for fun and th learn and practice the best plays is work not fun. To be fair some men feel this way as well. But men are more prone to take up the challenge of beating the system so to speak. That and they like being able to show their ladies the better way to play. Their ladies seem to like the arrangement of "make all your bets just let me throw the dice."

Be glad your wife likes to gamble and leave it at that, assuming she isnt developing a 'problem'

You are already pretty much assured to not be AP as a 'team', it sounds like, if I know women [no man does, but this much I can glean <g>]

PS: just noted you can vote. I needed the category 'wife will gamble but rarely so who cares'

It seems that "zeroes" are attractive to her... she wants to see larger prizes. So let her play the slots without any lectures.

I don't have a spouse, but I am currently sharing a residence with my playing partner, associate and good friend. As a solo player who lived alone for a number of years, the last 10 months have been a welcome change in having someone to share a bit of your gambling life and interest with. Especially a full-time player like myself who spends a lot of time alone. On the downside, since I now spend more time in the casinos, including meals with this partner, having him there at home at the end of the day is just a little much, even though he is a dear friend. Hey, I need my space. lol

Complicating things even further is the fact that I have another part-time roommate who thinks he plays poker for a living. I met this guy shortly after I moved to vegas, 3 years ago. He was just a little younger than me in mid twenties at the time and as I said, he thinks he is a professional poker player. He gets his meals comped of course and gets some comped rooms during the week at the lower end evil empire properties, IP, Bally's or Harrahs. On weekends he slept in his car. When he was on a real good run, he would rent one of those weekly type place, Seigle suites or Budget suites that are all over town for a week or two, but most times it was his car on weekends and comped rooms a few nights during the week. Anyway, I started letting him crash at my place on weekends, and when I sold my condo and rented a temporary place with my partner, my 'professional poker player' friend followed, completely our Vegas-style disfunctional little family.

Completely agree, I will spend hours reading up on here and WOO, not to mention books, magazines etc. Just trying to be a smart gambler. My wife is just not interested to her it's all too complex. She likes the restaurants and shows, fancy drinks etc at the casino, but gambling, nahh not interested. I've even tried to let her use some of my free play. She doesn't even want to do that. I guess I should be grateful she's not a slot jockey.

I have learned to loathe taking my wife to the casino.
I have tried teaching her BJ so she has a fighting
chance, but she's only interested in losing at the penny
slots. Getting her to leave is a monumental task, I
am not up to it anymore.

A relative of mine, has a full blown gambling addiction, and will play NOTHING but 3 Card poker.

No matter how many times I try to explain to them that they will never come out ahead, they continue to play it. Regardless of how much money I make playing Blackjack and do it front of them(if we happen to be at the casino the same day) they just don't get it.

Even when I break it down in simple terms such as "when YOU have Ace or King high and win, you get X. But when THEY have A or K high they get 3 Times X!" They just don't get it. They still wait for their Social Security check and dump it at the 3CP table.

It has cost them their marriage, their credit and made me lose all respect for this individual(mostly because I loaned them money and they burned it playing 3CP without paying me back).

So while I can see the fun side of gambling with family, the down side is far worse when said family member has no clue what they're doing and what it is doing to others.

Thats my wife. Its very frustrating. Now she's hooked
on a video game. She sits on the couch in the evening
and plays this moronic game for hours. I hate those
games worse than slots, I have never played an entire
game since I got a computer 20 years ago. They bore
me to death.

She Who Must Be Obeyed is not much of a gambler.

No table games, just the occasional penny slot, and if she loses five or ten bucks she is done.

To her credit, she gives me complete freedom to gamble, without lecturing, nagging or going "Told ya so."

I tought my ex basic strategy when we were dating 30 years ago. She learned it well enough to virtually never make a mistake. The same for pai gow poker. She would usually like to play with me at the same table for confirmation of close calls. She has told me since we separated she doesn'thave the casino urge like she used to. She was always happiest to play whatever the lowest stakes that were available. She told me that her last trip when she stayed at the Orleans she was able to play for over 8 straight hours and break even at pai gow. It's good to know the alimony money is not standing on a 15 versus a ten.....

I hope this doesn't come off as chauvinistic, because it's completely her choice, but my wife is like a deer in the headlights at a casino, so she pretty much opts to do whatever I am doing and bet in whatever fashion I suggest. I would just let her do it the way she wants to do it, but she always asks me what to do, so I have to suggest something. It's a complete role-reversal, because she's typically the one that, "Wears the pants," so to speak.

This sounds like a recipe for disaster.

I taught the girl how to play video poker and surprisingly, she really enjoys it. We usually play side by side and have a few drinks together and usually enjoy ourselves quite a bit, but she HATES to lose, so whenever that happens it's usually damage control from there. Whenever I hit the bj or craps tables, she usually wanders off to some penny slots, but after losing a bit returns to the best vp machines in the house. I must admit that I am not immune to a few dollars here or there of the newest and most exciting looking slot machines, so I see no harm in the entertainment that they provide for a few bucks. I understand that the likelihood of us winning is far less than the other games we enjoy playing, but we like the occasional bells and whistles. You don't get too much of that at VP, BJ, or the craps table.

My wife used to be a slot machine fanatic (I hate them) - but in the last year or so she has learned basic strategy blackjack and loves it.

We dont play real well together at the same table tho - lol !

Our next couples Vegas trip is coming up soon and the guys are dropping steady hints that the gambling should be done gender based. We will see how well that goes over.

My wife plays some games on her own: Pai Gow (Poker), Let it Ride, 4 Card, Caribbean and knows all of the strategies. She tends to play to trends and will play conservatively and will keep a straight together vs a high pair and an K/A in PGP and will play the game by the book. Her slot play is limited to about $40 - $60 in action on her favorite Wheel of Fortune slot or Pick a Pair VP machines. She barely knows basic strategy in blackjack and tends to overplay the action, taking advantage of doubles and splits when she probably shouldn't.

Until the alcohol. That's when you see her play the blind hands in Caribbean, split pairs in PGP when she should put an ace in the back. And once you get enough alcohol in her, you'll usually see her at the craps table betting PL with minimal odds but looking for the jackpot in the center.

That's why I don't drink when we gamble.

My husband never gambled a day before he met me; he was 45 at the time. I taught him blackjack and I dealt to him at home and he did really good at playing perfect basic strategy.

But it all flew completely out of his head whenever we went to a casino and had his first drink, which was followed by too many others. He drank to excess when he gambled and he gambled to excess when he drank and didn't have what we call here in the south, "stoppin' sense" at either.

I didn't care all that much about the money, but the drinking bothered me a whole lot.

My wife likes VP, maybe too much. I give her a simplified
strategy chart, and she will use that, but she plops down
at whatever machine is available and doesn't care about
the pay table. I admit I find that aspect a bit frustrating !

To me, the fun is learning a game well enough to play
close to perfect strategy and then playing on only the
best available paytable. I guess that doesn't seem like
fun to her.

We don't play for high stakes and don't ever lose a
lot, although I stick to my "loss limit" a lot more
rigorously than she does. AND I am resolved to
keep an accurate log for this year.

When I met my husband, he was strictly a slots player, and claimed he was always a winner. (Think: Super small sample size.) I first taught him craps, then got him onto BJ Basic Strategy, and then into Video Poker strategy. On our last Vegas trip (and fourth gambling trip of 2012), he played BJ almost exclusively, except for an afternoon chasing slot club points. (This was a mistake.)

It has been a slow journey, but I find it worthwhile. We have lots of fun playing Blackjack together!
