You are presented with the chance to make a bet for $500,000 profit.
The bet will cost you NOTHING to make.
You have a 75% chance of winning the bet.

However, if you accept the bet, you agree, win or lose, you will never enter into another wager in your life.

>I would not make the bet period.

I gamble for entertainment, it's really not so much about the money. So I would not make the bet.

Depends what do you mean by gambling. DO you mean just casino gambling? Do you mean not playing the lottery? Do you mean no office NCAA, Super Bowl pools? Do you mean no friendly wagers/heists on the next Packers/Bears game?

The question might make more sense if the stipulaton were that you could never make another bet again only if you won, otherwise the amount of the prize is irrelevant.

For me, like odiousgambit said, it's not about money. It makes no difference to me if the stakes are dollars, points, or M&Ms, I play for the excitement of the game.

Ditto.

One of my greatest gambling achievements was at a lunch-time poker game at work, playing with two other people, for nickels. And by nickels, I mean five cents. The pot had less than a dollar in it, but I managed to bluff two people out of it. They were violating all the rules, talking about what they had, and what they thought I had. And yet, they both still folded.

lol. I understand your comment, so let me try and explain why I created the poll.

There is always a lot of chatter about making a bet with a low HE, or making a bet that gives you the best chance of winning. While I don't like to give away money and like to win, I really enjoy the adrenaline rush from an unresolved bet. I want to win, I like to win, but I play to play.
That got me to wondering how many others on this board share that same feeling, that is less about the money, and more about the action.

I was trying to ask the question, without getting too personal with the amount. I don't want to know what your 'amount' is.

I'm sure you've heard the old joke,
Man to woman, "will you have sex with me for $100?"
Woman, "Hell No"
Man, "Would you have sex with me for $1,000,000?"
Woman, "Probably"
Man, "Well, now that we have established what you are, all we need to do now is negotiate the price."

If I just gave you 500K to never make another bet, that would say you are in it for the money.
But, would you still agree to the deal, if you weren't positive you were going to get the money? One FINAL bet for the junkie ;-)

Ahh, I really must be more careful with my words. Replace gamble with 'make or accept a bet'. And yes, this still includes a bet where you are 100% a winner.

Definitely it would mean any casino game, sports book, and all forms of lottery.

Would allowing friendly wagers where neither party presumably has an edge change your answer?

Then give me $1000,000 for my personal dice setting lessons. Afterwards you can shoot craps without breaking your gambling oath.

I would take the $500,000. I think I could live without making a money wager again. if it includes "bets" where I am gambling on a dice result in a board game, playing fantasy football or friendly handshake wagers... forget it.

Couldn't do it because my whole retirement account is built out of stocks and mutual funds. But if I were to do it, and won the bet, I would then fall back on the classic AP defense, "when I'm at the tables, I'm NOT gambling."

That's another wager discluding the present wager requiring you to agree never to make another wager, right? Otherwise, I kind of smell an automatic loss here.

If the answer to the above question is, "Yes," then, sure, I'd make the bet. My EV on the bet is $375,000, and the EV on the rest of my gambling throughout my life will be < whatever the amount I wager in total is, so yeah, one last hurrah for the big money!!!

Ideally it would be a perfect deck of 52 from a CSM, or something, first card off the top, if it's not a Spade, you win!

First off, this scenario is giving me a definite "evil genie" vibe, where I go out to get insurance or a bond and wind up denied.

But honestly, if you were to ask me what I would do with all that money, what I'd probably do is invest it (there's that evil genie again) and gamble what I could spare of the dividends. It's like when sports stars making millions are caught taking bribes - I just don't see the point.
The trick to poker is learning not to beat yourself up for your mistakes too much, and certainly not too little, but just the right amount.

The exact wording was "never enter into another wager." Whether you consider it "gambling" or not, advantage play still involves entering into wagers, so I think making this bet would preclude all future advantage play as well as recreational -EV gambling. Not that I'm the poll author or anything...
