I managed to hit a 'Royal' playing Double Bonus at The 4 Queens earlier tonight.

Payout was $2,000 but they deducted 30% as I haven't got a TIN number. They said that as I was from the UK then I could claim it back - anyone know, or had experience, of claiming back tax on a win?

Here's the Royal - I was actually dealt the 7 of Clubs (Flush) in my first 5 cards but obviously discarded it to go for the Royal.

Go to the IRS website and register for an EIN as a sole proprietorship. It's free and takes all of five minutes and you'll have a working 9-digit TIN.

Geoff,

You need to get a TIN. Here is the application. You would mark reason a.

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/fw7.pdf

Hit me up early next year, and I'll help you out with filing the taxes if you want.

For future gambling purposes, carry the TIN with you and they won't need to withhold the 30%.

Congratulations!!!

I'd get a poster made of that picture and put it up somewhere. I wish I could have gotten a shot of my jackpot on QuickHits, but it was during Free Games, so it kind of froze for a few seconds for effect, and then commenced with the remainder of the Free Games.

I also would have had to borrow someone's camera phone, as I do not have one.

The instructions for the W-7 are here:

http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/iw7.pdf

After reading more, it appears that you must send in the W-7 at the same time that you file your income tax return for next year, form 1040NR.

Because the return will include the W-7, you need to mail it here, along with proof of foreign status and identity:

Internal Revenue Service
Austin Service Center
ITIN Operation
P.O. Box 149342
Austin, TX 78714-9342

For the proof of foreign status and identity, the easiest document to provide is a notarized copy of your passport. So, while you are in the States, I recommend stopping in at a bank, or asking the casino, if they provide a notary service. You should bring the original passport with a photocopy to the notary.

Unfortunately, you will not be able to file until mid January.

CrystalMath is 100% correct here. You won't your $600 back until April 2013, at the earliest.

Thanks Crystal and all ...

Very helpful information ... I actually have an EIN for my UK company but I'm sure I didn't get a TIN at the same time.

Congratualtions!

And I hope you get your witheld money soon.

But if you don't mind a question, why dind't you play at the $1 DB machines with the 10/7 pay table? I skipped them becasue they were $1, and because nearby at the Cal they have 10/7 for $0.50 with the 1,000 bonus for a hearts royal (yes, I know yours wasn't hearts).

I'd lost $300 at the 10/7 $1 machines earlier - I usually end up having a nightcap at the bar and although I get penalised with the 9/7, I forfeit that to enjoy the bar ambience and to have a few drinks.

Thanks for the explanation. It makes perfect sense.

I just wondered, because no one seems to play the bank of $1 10/7 DB progressives.

But won't you have to pay tax on that eventually if you're in the US?

In the UK there is no tax on gambling winnings but it looks as though it will be a long time before I get to claim it back.

Congrat's on your Royal too !!!

Congrats! You can file in January and get it back relatively quickly after that. If you have an American bank account you can get a return processed very quickly by gov't standards, I usually see the cash back from my return about 10 days after I submit the return. Not sure if there would be complications with a foreign bank.
