Vegas baby!!!

Going to take a power nap yhen check out the Palms and Rio (I've never been to the Palms)...then see Penn & Teller and hit the tables late tonight

Palms is, unfortunately, not great. It was always kind of a low-roller casino but at least it used to have some energy. The last time I went, the place was just completely dead. Unless if you want to know what it's like to have a whole casino to yourself, you can skip it.

Penn & Teller are awesome. Very funny and they do some great stuff. If you can, try to get a seat that is close to the action -- Teller is a very talented sleight-of-hand guy, and if you're too far away it's a lot less impressive.

Nah, the Palms ain't THAT bad. True, it's not as crowded as it was 7-8 years ago, but it still has a good crowd on weekends. (Lots of attractive young women too.) I wouldn't call it a "low roller" casino. Take Fiesta Rancho, for example..........now that's a low roller casino.

About half a year ago I was in Vegas, and a friend of mine was there as well. He had gotten comped at the Palms, and he was texting me complaining about how crappy and dead it was. I figured, oh, it's just early; it will pick up when it gets later at night. Anyway, in the evening I went over there to meet him and I had to admit that he was right. The place was completely dead.

I'm not exactly sure (I've only stayed at the Palms once, and only been there a few times) but I think that they used to have some nightclubs or something, that they got rid of now. The table limits were always pretty low, but it attracted a younger crowd with less money (a lot of college-age people... which also means lots of hot women). But when they got rid of the nightclubs the hot women stopped going, which of course meant that the college-aged guys stopped going, which totally killed the place.

As far as "low-roller", it's all relative of course. Their table limits were much lower than what I was used to. When I played MS Stud there, it was min $5, max $5 (I've never seen a table game with no gap between min and max before). Of course I've been to places with even lower limits. But I always got the idea that the Palms was mostly a mix of locals and college-aged kids who don't have much cash but want to party in Vegas.

Anyway, I get the idea that they have made some really poor management decisions at that place. They have gotten rid of everything that used to attract people.

They had the Ghost Bar that was quite a few floors up, and they had a bar out in the pool area, for which I cannot remember the name. I had heard they had a plexiglass cover that was over the pool, so you could dance above the water. Not sure if I buy that one or not.

I thought those bars were still there? I know the only one that closed (I think) is the Playboy club. They still have Moon and Rain and the Ghost Bar, I think.

Palms, along with both Rio and Hard Rock are just simply not ideally located. If you add that to poor offerings such as no good table game play and perhaps sub par restaurants you will struggle to draw a gambling crowd.

Looking at the Palms website, yes, it appears they are still there, although I don't see the name of the pool bar. Perhaps that was Rain back then. Weren't these clubs the original places for celebs to hang out? Then some of the strip casinos got in on the action, and created better places to be seen?

Actually, the one time I stayed there we went to the Italian restaurant (don't remember the name -- we had to go up an elevator to get to it) and the food was spectacular. It was a classy, expensive place with good food. I was a little bit surprised because none of the clientele on the casino floor seemed like people who would be into that -- like I said, more of the young drunk college-aged crowd who would be happy to grab a burrito from the mexican place (which was also actually not bad)

In other words, the food is the one thing at that place that's not sub-par :)

Come to think of it, I think that my friend mentioned that it had been featured on some reality TV show or something (I don't watch reality TV so I don't know the details) and I guess it had contributed to the popularity? Maybe its 15 minutes are up.

They also used to have the UFC Ultimate Fighter Finale there (that is why I would usually go -- my friend is a big UFC fan and he would stay there when they had that) and they got rid of it. It seemed like they would draw a decent crowd to that event.

The Palms was big several years back. I think the VMAs were even there one year. It's been in music videos, too.

But people always prefer the newest venues, and the Palms is a dozen years old now. It's still a nice place though. Lots of baccarat.

The celebrity connection was, at least in part; when Paris Hilton was hot, and defined "the scene", she was (and still is, of course) the niece of two sisters on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills (Kyle and Kim Richards, whose sister Kathy married the Hilton in question) and also had her own reality show w/ her sister Nicky. Adrienne Maloof was another featured RHOBH person and good friend of both sisters (and neighbor), and the Maloofs owned the Palms outright. So both shows were constantly coming up with excuses to send people to the Palms and show lots of hot nightlife scenes of both generations of rich/famous, along with the gossip rags that report on what people are doing pushing the place through design or not (you HAVE to think the Palms gets the papparazzi into place if they have any clue the jetsetters are coming). That RHOBH show was a total train wreck you couldn't look away from the first couple of seasons; it was my guilty pleasure several years ago. But trendy people are fickle at best.

I don't recall the name of it either, but it was excellent, with a wine list that was absolutely ridiculous. Time I went was a weeknight and all wine half price, but I passed on uncorking the 35 Grand bottle for a paltry $17.5K... :-) That was 4 or 5 years ago. Had a decent steakhouse downstairs as well. Playboy club was still open IIRC and Ghost Bar. Not my speed so didn't go to them. As others have mentioned the place was a magnet for women, celebs, videos but that's a short-attention-span crowd and I've heard they have moved on.

All I know about the place was the Real World was shot there, I remember one of the rooms had a secret room, and it was among the best in Wizard's slot survey. I also remember they had a million dollar fine for hosts arranging prostitutes at the club. I would go there to play just for the good slot reputation.

Not anymore because FPDW is pretty low return, and even worse now they don't award points. They just keep sending me food credits and freeplay from my previous play a long time ago. Their dim sum at 24/7 is my favorite. Also their "crap" giveaways during weekends such as the tide pods. Sometimes they give away clothes and I hate clothes shopping so I just wear casino clothes.

Well at least for me, I would prefer a place that is NOT jam-packed with people so I can play the machine and/or table I want without waiting around a lot. And ditto for the line at the buffet. For me, FPDW is fun although I was on the wrong end of the variance spectrum when I played at the Palms the last time.

It's too bad how things have dropped off over the years because I actually like the ambiance at the Palms. But I guess people always gravitate toward the newest casinos, and with places like the Cosmo and Aria, the Palms just doesn't have the same luster anymore.

It could smell amazing, just take the same smell and turn it from 11 down to about 3-4.

Yeah, very floral, perhaps a mix of Easter Lily and Orchid, but multiplied by 100,000, or so.

Really?? My palms mailer each month is among the top 2 or 3 of the 2 dozen I receive each month. A modest amount of VP results in between $160 -$320 free play per month, depending on just how much I play. And FP JoB counts. (some places no longer give you anything for FP).

oh and if you are going to hit that 24/7 café, which is one of my favorites as well, they have great cookies at the checkout. Baked fresh each day. I am a bit of a 'cookie monster', and these cookies are among the vest in Vegas.

So it smells like cigarette smoke AND air freshener. I don't consider that amazing, but I acknowledge that I'm in the minority here.

I don't think it is amazing, but no, not air freshener...obviously artificial...Palms smells like the actual flowers, just multiplied by 100,000, or so. It's too much, in any event, maybe if flower petals were shoved directly up your nose, that's what it would smell like.

Years back I worked as an armed bodyguard for high profile clientele. And on one occasion I accompanied one such client to a Vegas club. And at the door they had a cat whose sole function was to determine exactly who was and who wasn't "attractive" enough to gain entrance. I forget the name of the joint but I figured they only allowed my fuglyself in was cuz I was guarding the body of one of the "pretty"people, hey hey.

I can accept the concept if there's some indication that it's addressing a need, but I suspect the motivation is something ridiculous, like wanting to establish a "signature smell," so when people walk into the Palms and sniff, their reaction is, "Hey, I'm at the Palms."

The proper way to implement would be to place sensors throughout the casino, blasting targeted fragrance into problem areas as they develop.

Palms smells like the actual flowers, just multiplied by 100,000, or so.

And that was before you stopped smoking. Imagine it now!

My reaction was, "Hey, if I try to eat while I'm in this building, I'm going to puke all over the place."
