Hello. A buddy of mine wants to take a guys trip to Vegas. He's ruled out the strip because there's not really anything to see that we haven't seen before. We've seen the fountains, the pirate shows and white tigers, and just about all the other big stuff and he wants some old time Vegas.

I was hoping that someone could give me an up to date review of the D. The posts here about them and the on the travel site reviews are typical -"the place is horrible" and "I loved it."

They have a player card/club but it seems to have one tier and I thought that it used to be two.

They have a substandard website in my opinion. If there's a link for their hosts (if they have any) then I can't find it. There's also a room that they won't show on the website. What's the deal with that?

Are the comps good and what will they give up front for a high four or low five digit line of credit?

I personally like the GN wth the pool and the resteraunts, but you don't need it for a guys only trip.

So, how about a few recent reviews and opinions would be appreciated. Thanks.

If you go to the D, make sure to tell the midget british accent casino manager that looks like a rat as well as the dyke woman in HL with half her head shaved off that theyre idiots and theyll never get rid of me.

To answer your question. Golden nugget is probably your best bet downtown and the Fremont St experience as well as the zip lining thing. Outside of casinos go check out the Mob Museum.

Spoiler alert: Mob still runs this townx except now they're in corporate now and have gaming in their pocket.
Any private business open to the PUBLIC (ie. droned out casinos) cannot have a criminal trespass enforced against an individual without GOOD CAUSE (Disruptive or Disorderly conduct). You will never go to prison for being thrown out of a casino for legal advantage play and then returning because it's simply unconstitutional 'as applied' to the individual. 'As applied' constitutional issues must FIRST be raised in DISTRICT COURT (trial court) to have it thrown out. You CANNOT raise it on APPEAL This is the best kept secret in the world of casinos not just in Vegas but everywhere in the country. Thank me later.

There are several posts here complaining about how LOUD the casino music is -- to the point that players and dealers can't even hear each other. They say they can handle it for around an hour then have to escape to the relative "quiet" of Fremont St. I've only walked in the D to look around the casino and the sound didn't bother me. Still, if nightclub levels of noise aren't your cup of tea, you might want to consider another base camp.

Count me in the camp of “Too Loud”. There is even a performance stage on Fremont just outside their doors.

Until Circa opens, I would think high 4 / low 5 figure players would have two choices: the GN and the California (as it was recently remodeled). If you want the old tyme Vegas experience, consider the El Cortez or Golden Gate.

I stayed at the D once and it was a nice room, although I didn’t pay for it. Gaming is limited, pool was good but cold because it was on the roof. When I stay downtown I prefer GN.

the D has adequate rooms. It's perfectly suitable for a bunch of dudes going to Vegas. I don't know your age or how you and your friends like to party, but I would have to agree with everyone that the D is way too loud and too crowded at night. I feel like I'm in a crowded club on busy weekends that is way too loud and smoky. For a high 4-digit, low 5-digit line of credit, you can probably do better than the D. The Golden nugget is much better.

Well, I for one like the D much better than the GN. However, I suspect the GN has improved - at least I hope it has - since my last stay with them, which was 2014. I still don't see troubling them with my business again, though.

The ONLY issue I have with the D Is the loud music. The rest is pretty great. Clean rooms, very friendly service, good food on site (plus McD) , decent games, including a few that only they offer. Nice comps, easy to get free rooms, very convenient, good room security.

The D is a bit ghetto for me, but some people like that. If price is not an object, my favorite downtown is the Golden Nugget. Almost anybody would say the same. However, on more of a budget I would consider the Golden Gate, if you don't mind a small room, otherwise the Four Queens. I haven't stayed at the Downtown Grand since it was the old Lady Luck, but judging by the casino, they did a very solid renovation. If you want something more on the quiet side, I'd strongly consider it.

I will say this about the D; since it's a "guys only" trip you might consider coinciding it with the next Miss D Hot Legs competition. I could put up with a lot of loud noise for a Vegas experience like this....

My huge gripe about The D (about 13 months ago) was that they didn't have enough elevators and they were automated. So you go to a console, put in your floor, then you're given an elevator number to wait for. I never waited less than five minutes. Many times, I watched 2-3 elevators open up before mine came down. I'm pretty sure people were getting preferential elevator/floor access. This alone makes it so that I won't go there again. This one experience was during the rodeo.

If you can put up with that and the sound, 10x odds is nice and drink service was adequate. The clientele is kinda trashy.

I dunno, Mission146's mostly positive review of The D here at WoV says...

Quote:

The Dancing Dealers (Party Pit) come out in the late-afternoon hours to the early a.m. hours, except Big Six almost always seems to have one. The Dancing Dealers really need to take some tips from those at the Golden Gate sister property, the Golden Gate dancing dealers are always moving, or at least smiling if standing still, looking like they are having a good time.

The Dancing Dealers at the D, on the other hand, are only about 50% dancing or smiling. If nobody is playing at their table, many of them stand motionless or only with a small amount of side-to-side movement with expressions ranging from slight boredom to abject misery...Regular dealers look more into it at other casinos than some of the so-called, "Party," dealers.

Admittedly it could have been an off night and the review is now over five years old but...

I stayed at the Downtown Grand, but it was something like 2014 - hardly "recent." The last time I was there was for lunch at Freedom Beat.

The rooms were OK, but it does have the drawback of having to walk down that pretty much empty walkway (one side is the wall of the Fremont; the other has, IIRC, a gift shop, a Hawaiian-run beef jerky store, and a pawn shop) between Fremont Street and Ogden. As I recall, anything close to a good game was tightened up over the past few years. As others have mentioned, if you want to stay downtown, Golden Nugget is the choice.

It's been many years since I stayed at the GN, it was probably round 09 the last time I stayed there. The room was very dated, dank and on the small side, almost depressing. My nephew stayed there a few years back. I thought his room was crappy as well.
I can't put my finger on just one thing, but I'm just not a fan of the GN casino over all. However, The shark pool is cool.

When the DTG first opened, I stayed there multiple times with comped rooms. I thought the rooms were better than most places I stayed at downtown.

Apparently, it doesn't have one; at least, the elevators don't stop there. I am guessing it is for the same reason most hotels don't have 13th floors - in China, 4 is unlucky, as it sounds too much like the word for "death."

In any of those properties, for anything that's facing the Fremont canopy & is not MUCH higher than about 50 feet or so, this particular form of "death" will be coming in sonic waves through a window that's going to be right up against the ass end of some of the most enormous speakers on the planet. With alleged "music" that's going to be cranked up to full warp drive thermonuclear death star implosion volume every night to blow the unlucky occupant at least halfway to China.

Even with decent elevation over the canopy, a room "with a view of The Fremont Street Experience" is NOT generally desirable. Instead, a room on one of the other sides with a nice view of the fabulous high-rise jail or the beautiful Greyhound bus depot is preferable.

We reset the Martingale after a long show of good behavior. Sometimes a suspension for something borderline or based on a new rule will not be subject to the Martingale, like ZenKing's latest.

I have had offers from the D and Golden Gate for years with fairly minimal play.

The current D offer is for four nights, $60 slot play, $50 match play, and $50 food credit.

The casino is louder than I would like but we usually enjoy our visits on each trip. We have been staying on the strip, but the consensus of opinions I have read (not including TripAdvisor) make it an option if it is not pool season.

I walked through the D like a year and a half ago and they had this cool mechanical horse racing game upstairs. That was really the only thing that stuck out to me. Oh, it also seemed "cleaner" and "nicer" than the other casinos in the area; I guess just cause it's newer? I'm not a big Downtown fan in general, though.

Thanks everyone for this Downtown Vegas discussion. Plane tickets for my August "historic/dive" casino visit are purchased!

This will be my first downtown stay. If it were just me, I'd pick the oldest joint, but for the comfort of the Mrs., I'm thinking the Golden Nugget might be a good compromise between history and comfort.

I was also thinking of the D, but got turned off by the noise factor.

TigerWu, what you saw was Sigma Derby: the coin-operated casino game with a rabid following!

Old Trapper brand is quite popular. It depends on if you like the jerky soft or not. That store has a bunch of different stuff, including made in the USA and imports. Lots of dried fruits, fish and shellfish. They also have a bunch of candy and Li Hing Mui powder available on just about everything

So do they have the dried salted prunes on the pit and stuff like that? I'll have to get there.

Yes. Tons. Check out their website beefjerkystore dot com. They can ship it to you.

There's also another place in the Plaza across from the Bingo hall that's got many of the same things, but also has these bagel chips in different flavors, as well as shortbread cookies that are pretty good.

While I'm not a huge fan of the D's casino, I applaud Derek Stevens for putting money and energy into his properties. This is opposed to Terry Caudill, the owner of the Four Queens and Binion's, who can't seem to scrape two nickles together to fix up the old Horseshoe. It's just sad.
