That's pretty cool. Do you usually try to get an upgrade with a $20 tip? What do you do if things go bad and they say they can't get you in an upgraded room....do you ask for your $20 back? :)

$20 trick works generally in Vegas at most properties, depending on actual availability. If they can't help you, they generally give the tip back.

That's a great video, mel! I've been doing the sandwich for 20+ years, and it's always either paid off, or they return it. Glad you had such a good experience. Kind of ironic that "free room upgrade" came up as a next video choice at the end.

My.personal best was Borgata; I was comped in for 3 nights, and the sandwich moved me from a standard room to a 2 br corner suite. Didn't think to price it, though; just enjoyed the hell out of it.

I've had that exact room at the Cosmo twice; once as a terrace 1br, once as a Japanese sex room (different colors, mostly yellow, and condoms.in the minibar). Gotta love the 6 person shower with the glass wall fronting on the bed.
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

I think I explained this at the time, but it's sort of a standard room, except for a few things. The decor is predominantly yellow and grey,.with Japanese art. There is some Asian picture pornography in the bookshelf. The shower is tiled on the back wall, but the front wall is floor-to-ceiling glass that looks onto the bed, is big enough for 6 people, and passes through to a raised Japanese deep soaking jetted tub, which sits in the bathroom window. The minibar has bilingual condoms, and Asian flavor snacks, along with the usual.

I'm sure there were other details I missed, but that's what was there. The Front Desk calls it a Japanese Sex Room, so that's what I called it, too, and mel mentioned it in his video, so I guess word's gotten around.

Do you think a $5 sandwich would guarantee that I DON'T get put in that room and get put in a standard one instead if I request it?

Extra Tips or Bribes work well all throughout the world in anything you do. This is why ZK is upset. Most of us understand that for a little extra Tip your fellow man in the trenches can be bribed in some way to make your life more comfortable sticking it to the man every chance we get. Too bad ZK is trying to ruin it for us people in the know because it will be more difficult to bribe or tip our comrades if tipping is not allowed anymore and the Employers pay a better wage. We still can bribe our way around but it won't have the same camouflage.

I'm heading to Tunica in a couple of weeks. I'll give it a try... Who knows right?

My favorite ZK line was the one about Chinese pre shuffled cards. I think about that conversation and just giggle like a school girl.

I feel like we need a thread where we discuss our favorite ZK comments. I wonder if that's against the board rules?

I have a hard time believing that ZK is this great humanitarian who gives to the people but refuses to tip anyone. I am getting to the point of asking ZK to reimburse me for the time on the pool tables and the one or two Heineken's I bought him that he did not drink... not to mention the tips that I gave to the bartender and two separate cocktail waitresses. On the other hand I look at is as payment to never have to owe or do business with his kind again.

For the Record he did offer me payment which I refused as we departed. I am not the type of person to start dividing up checks or tips. I always hated the groups that asked for separate checks... especially parties of 12 who wanted 12 separate checks and wanted to use Credit Cards to pay for them all... I would get to the point where I would tell them don't worry about the checks ... I'll pay for the meal. Who wants to do 12 checks for one party... mother f'ers!?

Not much of a drinker...just being social which he was talked into and he was driving so I am sure he didn't want to drink and drive. I am not a drinker either and only had one double shot of Captain which is very rare for me nowadays and I slammed it. My body can't handle it anymore but I did my share of drinking from 15-35 or so.

105 in Sacramento Metro today. A/C is barely working here at the homestead.

Some thoughts:

- I don't even bother sandwiching it anymore because they always just throw it out in plain view anyway.
- You are less likely to get an upgrade when your room is already comped, or when the hotel is very busy

Yes I'm talking about comped rooms. When I was traveling for business, I didn't try it, because it would mess up the govt accounting to have more than a basic room on a bill, even if.the price was the same to them. (I did a lot of 1-2 wk travels, no-brainer to amortize a 20 over several nights, but govt travel is a nightmare of regulation and oversight. Not without reason, sad to say.)

Type rooms are generally not guaranteed for comps. Several factors in play, like how valuable the guest is to the property, who their host is, the order they checked in, bed/smoke preference, ADA needs, etc. So the front desk has a host of excuses at hand if needed for a subsequent check-in.

Yeah, 20 goes a long way, most times. Just a little friendly graft.

Oh my God, I know!!! You can't give them a free upgrade if the room is going to say, 'Suite,' because that is going to be a problem for the bean-counters. If that was all I had, I would have to artificially put them in another room moving a guest who wasn't actually in the suite to the suite temporarily so I could print out a receipt that showed the Government employee in the regular originally booked room.

I've heard that, but they only care about what the folio says or doesn't say. As long as you can game the folio, they don't mind to actually physically be in a suite.

Staying at CET properties and having a Diamond card, they have upgraded my room nearly every time at check-in to the best available (non-suite).

Room's at Bally's AC are quite dated, but they keep them clean. There's 2 towers there, the Dennis Tower and Bally's tower. The Dennis Tower is the original hotel from 1921 and the rooms aren't that great. We were given a corner ocean-front room in the Bally's tower and it was really nice (but still could use some remodeling). It had huge floor to ceiling windows facing the ocean and a separate bathroom with the same windows and a tub facing the ocean.

At Ceasars AC they have The Forum, Ocean, and Centurian towers. They've always put us in the Centurian tower, and those rooms are great. They have huge showers with seats and floor to ceiling glass doors.

I think I stayed in the Harbor Tower at Harrah's AC and those rooms were also gorgeous.

At my recent stay at Flamingo Vegas, the first room was filthy and looked like a crack den. I requested a move and the second room was nicer, although still dirty. I won't be staying there again.

I've tried the $20 at Borgata, it worked once at The Water Tower and once at The Borgata, and it didn't work a couple times, mostly because of what Babs said: we don't go there often, and the times I tried it the place was packed, and we aren't super high players.

Now I realize, we don't really care about the room anyhow, we're only there to sleep. Give us something where we don't have to walk to the end of the hall and we're happy. (And anyhow, the Aria suites are all at the end of the hall.)

Best upgrade we ever had was last year, at Harrah's AC. The line to check in was almost an hour, and when I got to my agent, she said, "Sir, would you mind if I put you in the penthouse?" I did a double take, and said, "How much?" "No charge, sir." (Honestly, it was kinda garish, but we were tickled anyhow.)

A falling knife has no handle.

Not a casino, but we were at Fairmont Orchid on Hawaii's Big Island, and we had a 1st floor garden view. Well, there were burned out light bulbs, the room was dank, and the air conditioning didn't work and there was dust everywhere; the room hadn't been rented in a while. So I called the front desk and complained, and I got a hospitality manager who seemed genuinely ashamed of what she saw. She gave us a comp for dinner, told us to check back with her in a couple hours. I called her back and she had a bellman lead us up to an upper floor ocean view, and there was a complimentary fruit basket and champagne. THAT was the best upgrade ever, because we were there a week. That's worth about $300/night at today's prices, I don't remember what it was then (2003).

If you are upgraded curtesy of the $20 trick what effect will this have when it comes time to ask if they can comp some/all of your stay based on your play? Are they going to see the free upgrade and comp you less (or nothing) than they otherwise would?

Not worth it for me. In the state where I gamble you will have to pay the 14% hotel tax (plus most properties charge the "fees" even for comped rooms). At my regular casino I get 4 comped rooms a week, and I always ask for the cheapest room available, I do not care, smoking, nonsmoking, I do not care which tower, etc.... I just do not want to get stuck in a 5k suite and get stuck paying the 14% tax (which can easily happen in the winter when it is a ghost town, and they are giving away huge upgrades). To me it would be +EV to tip for a downgrade. I am only briefly in my room (and usually only if I am too intoxicated to drive home a specific night, so 14% 4-5 nights a week can get expensive on top tier suites, especially when 80% of the day I never set foot in them). I hate hotel taxes and fees even on "free" rooms....
