Caesars runs this PSA during the World Series of Poker coverage on ESPN. In it, one of the "employees" states, "You shouldn't gamble if you are lonely or depressed". "Depressed", I can understand, but, "lonely"? I think a major reason many folks come to the casino is to enjoy the energy and excitement of gambling with others. If the casino was empty of customers, the lonely would seek out others someplace else.

Therefore, I am not clear how "lonely" = problem gambler.

Do you agree that if you are, "lonely", you should refrain from gambling?

Whats the difference? Is the house edge
differnt if you feed a slot when you're lonely?

Just as there is a difference between "depressed" and "clinical depression", there is a difference between "being alone" and "lonely".

I do think that the line in that PSA was referring to the latter in both cases.

If Caesars doesn't want you to play when you're
lonely, it means you'll quit too soon and leave. They
want a happy player who'll sit there for hours.

I'm not sure what you are getting at DJ. How does "lonely" = problem gambler? I think that feeling lonely is one of the main reasons folks go to places where there are other people. I am not sure how wanting to be around other people equates to, "don't gamble, you are impaired".

What the f*ck? there are some days when gambling is the only thing that causes me to actually talk to another person. If Caesars doesn't want me to do that at their casinos, I guess I can just go to Valley Forge. It's closer anyway...

I don't see why you shouldn't gamble because you're lonely... it seems a good way to get out of the house. What, are you more likely to overbet your bankroll if you're lonely?

Given dictionary.com's first definition of "lonely", CET is right.

1. affected with, characterized by, or causing a depressing feeling of being alone; lonesome.

lonely doesn't have to be related to "depressed", but its most common definition is.

I like rdw's idea of it being a backhanded ploy though. :)

Of course - such a slimy, underhanded tactic as putting out a PSA to bolster PR could only be the work of Ṭ̜͂ĥ̲̱͖͓̔̒ė̪͎͇ ̼̰̹͚̮̆̋ͨͫ̅̇ͅC̖̜̟̮̮͓͛̍ͯ̋͝ȧ͕̻̤̘̠̜̹̊̓̂͌̃s̙̹̥̪̈́ͪ̾ͅi͖n̶̫͚͙͈̤͚̋̈ͧ͑o͍̔!

(Not really the point, though.)

I didn't say it was slimy or under handed. Just pointing out the ad is self serving. I don't think managements having meetings over poor lonely vulnerable gamblers.

My guess would be the wording comes from some government shrink, not the PR people, though.

This is a CYA PSA. It smells like it was some lawyer's idea.
Someday, joor goin' to see the name of Googie Gomez in lights and joor goin' to say to joorself, "Was that her?" and then joor goin' to answer to joorself, "That was her!" But you know somethin' mister? I was always her yuss nobody knows it! - Googie Gomez

Just that PSA? And not included with the impersonator that teaches you how to play all the table games, or something else about the property?

She's leaving Vegas, CET probably doesn't give a damn. True addicts start playing at the airport when they get there!! :D

But speaking of McCarran Airport, last trip leaving *trigger lonely feeling*, I got back to back quads for the first time ever on a TB+ machine. "Airport Deuces" certainly doesn't exist anymore though. :P

You don't know she's leaving, maybe she just got
there. My wife won $1200 at the airport slots once
10min after we got off the plane.

That's why she's gambling at the airport or car rental center. McCarran doesn't give a crap about your emotional status. LOL.

Gamblers Anon presses the Nevada Gaming Commission, NGC asks Casino operators to appease (or at least look like they are) and viola voila...a PSA for responsible gaming is born. CET image improves. Everyone's a winner.

Nah--the others are just smart enough to avoid the airport slots. She's precisely Caesars' target customer--someone who'll play their low returns!
