I got approached in a casino once from clearly a tourist. Wasn’t asking for money, but wanted to know what bus to take to where. I was wearing a station’s shirt or something so he figured I was a local and knew. Would’a helped him find the proper route if I knew, but I honestly have no idea. The only bus I know of is “the deuce”, but have no idea where it goes. In hindsight I coulda googled it for him, but hindsight is 2020, as they say.

But for real, I guess this question is best asked to Darkox — how or where do you pay on a bus? Do you have to pay for a ticket ahead of time (like a train?), or do you just pay the bus driver? Does it matter how far you go?

Different rules for different companies.

Generally long distance coach busses require a prepurchased ticket. They have online and kiosk printing and live agents at the stations

City busses in cities are pay as you enter. Some take cash. Most do not give change so must be exact. And most have some form of quickpay card like NYCs Metrocard. You reload cash on it (which comes with a discount for higher loads) and use the card for paying for entry

You seriously have never taken a paid bus trip your entire life?

I mean I guess different areas of the nation have different experiences. I have never milked a cow!

I’ve been on a bus a few times in Mexico when I was a kid and those were horrendous. But no, I’ve never gotten on a regular bus and paid for it or whatever, like I see people doing in movies.

last time I was in Vegas I used their city bus because I didn't want to rent a car for various reasons
it was a great deal - $8 for the whole day - that was a few years ago - maybe it's gone up since then

the buses were clean and timely - very little waiting - because you could sit in the upper deck you got a great view of the city

no complaints

the last time I bought a new car I used cars.com
it's a very popular site and all the local dealers compete to show a sharp price
I paid way less than MSRP - IIRC 4K less

the way GM used to market Buick - back in the 70s is that it was almost the same car as a Cadillac
it had all the features of a Caddy - they sold it for much less because it didn't have the Cadillac name - and they still got a high markup for it

my parents had an Oldsmobile
us kids used to call it an Oldpeoplemobile

It’s funny how that works huh, as people get older they like Buick’s more.

Ps el Camino pickup cars 4 lyfe

Early 2000s I was judging at a golf tournament. Somehow or another some other judges got these "BUICK" baseball caps to keep. Partner judge and I were upset we didn't get them (they almost gave them to us by mistake.) I mentioned it was scary how we thought a Buick baseball hat looked cool.

The only time I ever remember being on a real bus was the one that circled our university campus and it was free. I have been on shuttle buses from the airport to hotels or car rentals but I don't really consider those buses.

Maybe it's a non-western us thing. I started riding buses by myself at about 10. Never had school bus service - these were city buses. Rode a lot of greyhound in high school-college. Used buses in several European countries as an adult, but haven't ridden US buses since about 1985.

I think it's a great way to travel, except I hate the smell of the chemical toilet on long-distance routes.

I just find it so incredible! Seriously!

I have ridden on busses since I can remember. I was riding NYC busses alone and subways at 9 years old because I had most of the NYC maps n line routes memorized (and in those days parents were more inclined to allow kids to travel on their own)

I understand riding rickshaws and llamas and venice gondolas might be something people havent done as those modes of transport are in foreign countries

And some people are afraid of airplanes.

But with busses running all around the country I just find it sad there are so many people who have never ridden one.

They can be quite convenient (those who criticize the bus usually then state they have never ridden one which is like stating spinach tastes nasty while admitting they never tried it)

Yep, I started riding the city bus to school and back around age 11. I went to a private school so we didn't have a school bus service. Rode the bus as my daily commute for many years in Seattle. It was cheaper than driving and parking, and much more pleasant than sitting in bumper-to-bumper traffic. Sure you were still sitting in it sometimes (the buses had dedicated lanes on some streets), but at least someone else was driving and you could read/nap/phone/etc.

I think I told the story before of talking and drinking one early morning (around 8AM) at Stage Door with a guy in a uniform from the open air bus that goes up and down the strip. He was doing the beer and shot combo every 10 minutes for well over a hour. Figured he was the guide and needed to be hammered to deal with the job.

Imagine my shock when I saw him driving the bus a couple hours later.

I think it is just a product of your environment. I am equally astounded by people who have never got a drivers license. I do not know a single healthy adult who doesn't have a drivers license. Of course, I have never lived in a big city in the Northeast.

That's the thing. Mass transit works very well in the big cities. But in less densely populated areas, dealing with buses can be a pain in the ar$e.

In about 2012 I worked at place that imported several managers from CA. One was early 20s or so and had to get his drivers license! If he had been from NYC I would have not been very surprised, but CA? In his early 20s?

I have known a small number of women who never learned to drive. One tried and almost caused 3 accidents the first time she tried, said that was it. She was born in the 50s probably and this was the 80s. Another a few years ago said she just never wanted to drive. She was of Gen X. For that matter, my maternal grandmother never learned. Another almost crashed her first time out, that was that.

I cannot remember anything in my life as overpromised as this self-driving and "mobility" thing. Auto companies are jumping in with both feet. Billions will be lost. Expect Ford to go near-death again in a few years over it.

I think I liked short bus shorty better. Delay short bus shorty for a few seconds then play the other one at the same time. When you do that you have a new #1 hit rap song.
