Whenever I am connected to the Courthouse Wi-Fi (various courthouses int he NYC area), I cannot access WoV. Whenever I attempt to navigate to WoV (whether it be via a link, a bookmark or merely typing in the webs address), I am taken instead to the www.nycourts.gov website. I can access DT, other gambling sites and basically any other web address I type in. However, any attempt to go to WoV automatically takes me to the NY Courts homepage. Very strange.

I've been in several Wi-Fi spots where WOV is blocked but its always been simply due to the site being related to gambling.
Simply blocked, no redirect.
Its just a forum. Nothing here to get obsessed about.

Strange. I think the NY Courts disapprove of you patronizing gambling sites on their WiFi and the redirect is their way of saying to get back to work.

Whatever the case, I deny anything to do with it.

I have had this happen many times.

What about body building forums? I don't know what kind of software this forum uses.....but perhaps forums using this kind of software are blocked? I'd imagine other websites, like facebook/twitter/etc. would be blocked as well.

What about porn sites? Are those blocked too?

When on holiday I sometime go to Monmouth (Wales) and they have free WiFi from the Town Hall. I did experience difficulties in getting to my mail because they used a strict list of sites one couldn't get to. Even a kindly chat with the clerk couldn't sort the problem. Luckily if you sat at one side of the building you could pick up the pub's WiFi and they had no restrictions.

So yes it sometimes happens that free WiFi has restrictions. Also, of course, beware of rogue freebies grabbing your details - I've been receiving junk mail from Hungary for years!

I know (from many years of working for a federal contractor) that if you are on a server run by the federal government or one of their contractors, that their servers will be configured to block access to any site related to porn or gambling. You will be redirected -either to a message about why you were redirected or to some neutral home site of the government.

I assume it is pretty much the same for state, city and other local governments. The governments don't want to be embarrassed.

You usually cannot access video games as well.

There is not a single master list of such porn and gambling sites -and if there were it would need to be updated very frequently. I imagine the list of banned sites is built up from searching on keywords and that the word "Vegas" is one such keyword.
So many better men, a few of them friends, are dead. And a thousand thousand slimy things live on, and so do I.
