It's going to be hard to replace Mission, not just for his quality of moderating, but also quantity. Dude was online a lot, and that's a good feature to have in a mod.

Probably high on the criteria list, I would say.

I think some suggested banned members and someone else suggested the must be alphabetically close to mission.

That only leaves Micky C and Monet.

I’m on the forum more than enough but to be honest I don’t understand why anyone would take an unpaid job for a site that makes money?!? It really makes no sense to me. If the site wasn’t meant to generate income then sure I could see unpaid workers. I just don’t get it for a site like this one. Just my opinion.

My understanding is that most forums can theoretically generate revenues by means other than the more obvious ones. Moderator is generally just an unpaid position. There’s really nothing unusual, there.

Do you know what I don’t understand? Unpaid volunteers at hospitals, like, custodial or cafeteria. Private hospitals. Have you seen the prices in the pharmaceutical/medical industry? The hell do I want to volunteer in a hospital for? Break me off a small slice of just the profits that the hospital’s pharmacy makes and pay me $15/hour with full benefits.

At least that is something one could add on their resume, especially if they were trying to get a foot in the door for lower tier medical jobs like a nursing assistant.

I’m not sure “Wizard of Vegas moderator” is something I’d include on my resume if I had one.

While we are at it, the casinos should put me in charge of all their promotions as well.

Unfortunately, I don't look good in green. Even if I did look good in green, they couldn't pay me enough, well they could, but they wouldn't.

There is one thing for sure, If I were a Mod I wouldn't need no stinking IP matches to ban sockpuppets and dupe ID's.

I wouldn't ban you Buzz xoxo.

I’m not leaving, but suppose I wanted to try to get on with LVA, (just an example and I have no idea or present interest how Curtis hires) I think Administrating here for over five years and a referral to Wizard would be a useful inclusion.

If hospitals are implicitly using volunteer work as a de facto implicit pathway to getting a paying job, when such volunteer work is a position that would be paid anywhere else but a soup kitchen, that’s straight exploitation, in my view.

I’m not a huge fan of the current medical industry, though, so could be biased.

Hospitals use volunteers as guides to escort people through hallways to a different part of the hospital. Sometimes at a reception desk. Not for brain surgery (that's for autistic people, apparently.)

I’m referring specifically to food service staff and custodial. If someone wants to volunteer to walk the infirm from one place to another and keep company, I have no objection to the hospital having that sort of volunteer. The hospital is getting paid to cure or alleviate your ailment, not to be your friend.

I’m not even talking about people running food to rooms, I’m not sure if they’re paid or not. I know some cafeteria people are, presumably, if they can’t get any volunteers. I’m talking about people working behind the lines or as cashiers as volunteers. Maybe kitchen/washing staff, maybe not, never been in the food prep area.

Also, custodial? Cleaning bathrooms. Come on. No way a private anything shouldn’t be paying someone to do that.

Granted, I’m talking about a NP hospital, but still private. Plenty of people there getting paid and NPO’s care about the bottom line as much as any for-profit business.

In Canada, there are plenty of volunteers in hospitals. My daughter did it for a year. She worked the information desk and assisted patients to and from the elevators and liaison with security guards and porters who would take care of patients in parking lots or needed higher levels of care.

As well gift shop employees are usually volunteers working for the local hospital's foundation or thrift shop.

Volunteers do so because they choose to. A patient in a for profit hospital can use comfort as well as one in a non profit.
I'm wary of people who don't understand the volunteer mentality.

I'm not aware of any hospital that relies on volunteers for kitchen work or custodial jobs. Is your experience different? My hospital in NY had volunteers to man the information desk, and candystripers. They also had a book cart that was run by volunteers.

My experience is different. I'll PM you the name of the hospital if you like, and I don't think ALL of them are volunteers, just as many volunteers as they can possibly get. Definitely more food than custodial, but I've seen custodial. I'd have to REALLY believe in a cause to clean a toilet or change out trash for free. That cause would not be the perpetuation of high-paid employees in an environment that involves captive customers and fundamentally overcharges for services as it is.

My neighbor volunteered for one of the hospitals. The volunteers get preferences depending how long they've been at it. Her first position was the kitchen. If she volunteers long enough, she can do something else.
