Come to think of it - isn't the "I'm a bigot" option sort of an attack on Nareed?

I guess it depends on the intent, but I assumed there was some element of humor in the structuring of the original poll that inspired the meme. I suppose it's possible that Nareed was deadly serious.

Bingo! To me the vile hatred of the last "N word" thread should have led to being nuked. All Christians were attacked but you know who is a you know what. No excuse at all for this thread, I see no S&W here.

The "I'm a Bigot" option is just plain funny, I don't care who you are. It was hysterically subjective in its first use, as Nareed well knew, and remains funny in reminding all of us that we are coming from unique perspectives.

There have been appalling things said in this forum every time religion or politics comes up, and many times when that's not even the subject but someone takes it there. I'm not even going to pick a side to say that about; just appalling, to the point I can't even read several threads for their anger and extreme intolerance, whether religious or political. If I were to agree with Mission about cutting down the non-gambling threads, these are the ones I would boot first. But several of those members most involved in the vitriol are people I respect and value in other areas. And further, I think Aaron Sorkin had it correctly in "the American President":

'America isn't easy. America is advanced citizenship. You've gotta want it bad, 'cause it's gonna put up a fight. It's gonna say, 'You want free speech? Let's see you acknowledge a man whose words make your blood boil, who's standing center stage and advocating at the top of his lungs that which you would spend a lifetime opposing at the top of yours.' You want to claim this land as the land of the free? Then the symbol of your country cannot just be a flag. The symbol also has to be one of its citizens exercising his right to burn that flag in protest. Now show me that, defend that, celebrate that in your classrooms. Then, you can stand up and sing about the land of the free. '

I don't think a week goes by on this forum where I don't have to almost chant this to myself to keep from just screaming at the monitor. But it's part of what makes the forum great; the balance the guys achieve in allowing all voices to be heard, while insisting on decorum and respect. So, shine on, free speech.

There was no humorous intent. The original poll was created by someone who strongly supports gay marriage and wanted to belittle those who disagree by giving them only the "bigot" option. The ironic thing is that it just barely missed winning. ;)

Still hilarious, worked on multiple levels.

I agree that more good moderators would be a good thing. Any long-time members may apply to be secret admins and secret admins may apply to be full admins at any time.

Can you explain the need for secret admins? Not sure why not just have them out in the open. What kind of "power" dose a sneaky admin have?

I am not asking because I would want to be one I'm just curious. Personally I don't know who would want to do this kind stuff without any compensation.

reminds me of this song: Secret Agent Man https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6iaR3WO71j4&feature=kp

I mean, I guess originally mocking the poll in question would have been an attack on what she said, but making it a meme like this does feel far enough from the original poll that I'd have to call it a form of personal attack.

It is not a personal attack, it is a bit of satire. Nareed posted a poll that basically said if you did not agree with his position you were a bigot. I was one of the first to add "I'm a bigot" to another poll and it kind of caught on. It has clearly gotten far enough away that more than one person has asked "why do you peeps keep doing this?"

This kind of thing is old online. Anyone else here remember Usenet and the "Green Golf Ball Joke?"

Why would you refer to everyone on the forum as a bunch of nondescript cats? Your tone would imply a cut-down, and your explanation is hard to swallow, respectfully.

Cat is pretty well known to be synonymous with "dude", "guy", "mate", etc.

When I started this thread I thought "no ad hominem attacks" was a fancy way of saying "no personal attacks." However, I see now that may not be the case and the "ad hominem" standard may confuse people, including me. So, going forward it is safe to equate the choice for "no ad hominem attacks" to represent "no personal attacks/insults."

I agree that more good moderators would be a good thing. Any long-time members may apply to be secret admins and secret admins may apply to be full admins at any time.

Why are the Admin's "secret"? The rule we use is simple. Admins have a different "name" color and can post as they wish. But when they have to post as a Mod or Admin, it is to be in the "official" green moderator color.

If someone has been around, they have posted good info and have kept a level head, and can offer time to be a Mod or Admin, then you (Mike, Mission, etc) extend an offer to help run the site.

See - and here we have a perfect illustration of one of the things I was talking about earlier. It's been a recurring theme on this board that to some people, the love of a superbeing about to at least allow all humanity to be tortured unless they believe something not only utterly absurd in its own right but something He Himself has deliberately obfuscated to meet His damnation quota is so dear to their hearts that even to point out that that's what it is is seen as a personal attack.

And what do you call this?
