Burning Man is a stupid event. Lots of Burners were at the casino on Friday night and they are a bunch of cheap, entitled brats. In an entire shift I made a whopping TWO DOLLARS.

These people spend thousands of dollars on the tickets and the supplies to go sit in the desert for a week, and they can't even tip the dealer? Screw them!

You are the one sounding entitled. Just do your Job that you ALREADY GET PAID FOR and then be grateful you even have a job.

People have a way to sence you don't like them and have a negative attitude, especially if you are being fake and pretending to like them and have a fake good attitude. You might think you are acting the same but the chances are you are tossing out bad vibes.

Spend less time being angry at the people who don't tip, and more time being happy about the people who do. Let that shine though and the tips will come, perhaps not this night, or the next night, but at some point it will all average out.

Take the energy you spend being angry, thinking and writing about it and spending that time looking for a job that doesn't depend on other people charity if you can't handle it.

I make exactly the same amount of money per hour whether I'm standing there doing nothing because there are no players or I deal to five players who don't tip... minimum wage minus taxes on tips (imputed income) that is nonexistent.... a very bad deal.

On average, the casino pays about half of my income. The other half comes from players. The same is true for cocktail servers.

Do you people really think that casinos would give away drinks to players and offer BJ games with good rules if they had to pay people twice as much money? Ha!

Is this true? When I have been asked to assess a peri-op patient for their mental clarity, that was a question I'd often ask! Of course they wouldn't know, and I would act all concerned.

Occasionally I'd set the patient up with the answer, and then ask. The nurse observing would be shocked when the patient would say "Ulan Batur".

Untill then, I'll do as I please when it comes to tipping. I shouldn't deny myself just because you want me you pay you more wages. BTW I do tip dealers and other casino employee's. I would venture a guess it's significantly more than you have. But whenever I hear people bitch about their tips and the call customers, you know', the customers( tippers or not) that help pay your bills. It triggers me and makes me want to not want to tip at all.

Lots of people don't tip, and those who do don't tip every hand. That's fine. The problem is when virtually NO ONE tips ($2 a day is a small fraction of the average).

If you're an average tipper, great, thank you. If you're a Burner who plays at a full table of Burners for hours and tips nothing, then please stop and go play slot machines.

Slot attendants want tips as well, but that's besides the point. You expect people to go play a machine and lose 14% of their money compared to a game that might only be 1%-5% disadvantage for them.

Why do you expect other people give up what they like doing just because they're not willing to help add more money to your wallet for doing your job that you already get paid for?

When no one tips that's YOUR problem not their problem.

Why do Blackjack dealers deserve tips over the countless other jobs where people rarely get tipped but probably should? Just because it's customary shouldn't be a good enough reason. My guess is that you don't tip all people that should be getting tips but normally don't.

"f you're a Burner who plays at a full table of Burners for hours and tips nothing, then please stop and go play slot machines." Please include that in a sighed letter to the table games director. Better yet, next time people aren't tipping just until them out and explain to management why.

I had a mattress delivered yesterday. And a bunch of furniture. The mattress guys came, brought the mattress in and left it standing because the bed wasn't here yet. They also do not remove the old box spring and mattress. They will leave it at the curb if I ask. Didn't tip. The furniture guys took their shoes off about 6 times each time they brought another piece. They moved the furniture an inch here and an inch there every time wife asked. They put the mattress (they are f..ing huge nowadays) on the bed. They carried one small old piece down into my basement.
Tip. $10 for each of the 3. Probably in my house 30 minutes.

Kevin, your boss was probably exceedingly happy that a bunch of Burner's were filling your table. I'm guessing they were average to below average players? Probably good for your long term happiness to not dwell on the bad tippers, just focus on what your average is. Since there effectively is nothing you can do about, other than YOU always being a dealer a tipper would want to tip, focus on that.

Actually the boss was not happy that a bunch of Burners were filling up the tables. Regulars couldn't get a seat. Regulars typically buy in for $100 or more and often bet more than $5/hand. Cheapie Burners buy in for $20, bet $5 a hand, and demand a drink every 5 minutes. Their skill level is average but their volume is low, they're self-entitled jerks, and they don't tip. Everyone hates them.

Tips are supposed to be given for above average service. They should never be expected. The problem is we've built up a "tip culture" in this country where people in service industries just assume it's part of their paycheck. I was even in a situation the other day where the tip was automatically included as part of the service price. I literally had no option to NOT tip, even if I had gotten terrible service.

If you work in a service job of some kind and someone doesn't give you a tip, either they feel you haven't done a good job or they just hate tipping in general. You can't get mad at them; get mad at tip culture for conditioning you to expect it, and your employers for taking advantage of the system.

I don't like the tip culture either. But for whatever reason, people have decided to tip dealers, bartenders, cocktail servers, slot attendant handpays, and restaurant servers. The only way to change this is to put up a big sign at the casino entrance that says "TIPPING IS A BANNABLE OFFENSE" and then pay the employees twice as much so they make the same amount of money (just minimum wage will result in having zero employees). In order to pay the employees twice as much, the table minimums will be higher, the rules will be worse, and the complimentary drinks will be stingy (e.g. bet $1/spin not 25c at a slot machine). I just can't see that as being any better. Some people choose to tip more than average which allows other people to tip less.

When I play BJ, if I see a stack of red chips behind the discard tray, I tip very little. If I see nothing or just a couple of white chips, then I'll tip a white chip about every other hand when the count is positive. This may be less than average, but it's way higher than Burners and most Asians. I don't have the income to bet $100 on the hand and a red chip for the dealer like some people.

If I'm playing BJ and the dealer is a jerk (very rare, only happened once in the last year), I don't just continue to play but not tip; I'll just stop playing and do something else. I don't want to play a table game with a jerk dealer. The vast majority of dealers are nice people who do a thankless job for minimum wage. Would you deal cards to people all day long for $7.25/hr?

Let us look at it from a gambler’s point of view.

KevinAA would maybe also bitch at players who cannot stand a bad streak. Yet, gambling is about knowing there is an average : sometimes you’re lucky, sometimes not, but on the whole it evens out.

Shouldn’t he think of customers the same way? Some are liberal, some are stingy, but in the end you get your average. (That’s how your taxes are measured, anyway.)

Kevin, my job was similar to yours, in that on a case by case (for you player by player) basis I had wild swings in income. For a big case taking all day with Medicaid I'd get $300, for the same case with private insurance I'd get $2400. Medicare was around $700. So did I bitch and moan about the day I got $300? (A little, but not out loud!). I knew I'd average $1500 or so over the year for that type of case, and it made me a good living.
If you average $25 an hour over the course of a year, then don't be miserable during the week it is $15. Nor do not be too ecstatic during the week it is $35. Just figure the overall conditions of your employment are worth $25 an hour.

No, I don't bitch at players who cannot stand a bad streak. Usually those people get up and leave. If they get mad, tough titties. If they curse, they get warned, and if they curse again, they're gone. When people lose, I often say "sorry; I like it when my players win" (it's true, as it's not my money in the tray, and I know that wishing all my players win every time is not going to happen, but it makes people feel better to hear that).

I'm aware of the variance in tipping. The problem is that with Burners, they shouldn't even be there in the first place because they're obnoxious, cheap and dirty. GO AWAY

We don't allow stinky homeless people in the casino. Burners are no different except that they're stupid enough to actually pay lots of money to be stinky and dirty.

Tipping isn't going away any time soon. In fact, the new "raise the federal minimum wage to $15/hour, as if that's ever even getting to the Senate floor" bill not only will raise the minimum wage for "tipped employees" to match the regular minimum wage, but will (a) give all employees the right to keep 100% of all tips they take (i.e. they can opt out of "tip pooling"), and (b) force all employers to inform their tipped employees of this fact.

Great idea, let's jack up the cost of living for everyone.

Seems like you've got the attitude that as long as you get yours, everyone else doesn't matter. Doesn't everyone deserve to have a standard of living?

Here's my opinion. Casino dealers make way, way, way too much money relative to just about every other job short of corporate executives.

Their jobs could be done by robots and it will be a nicer experience for the players when they are replaced by robots at 1/20th of the cost.

Occasionally you will get a dealer who is nice, personable, and deals the game well. They are the minority and usually after a few years that good attitude will have boiled off into resentment and nonstop seething about perceived undertipping -- like most tipped employees.

If you're a tipped employee and you *ever* complain about being undertipped, I hope you are consistent and return the money (or donate it to charity) those equally numerous times you are overtipped.

I can't count how often I have seen some moron give a poker dealer two green chips for pushing him a $200 pot in 1-3 NL. Those $50 tips make up for a heck of a lot of "stiffs," but you won't hear about that if you talk to the dealer. All you'll hear about are the stupid stiffs who didn't tip a dollar when they won a $40 pot. God forbid the dealer should make less than $40 an hour.

And I am sure all of you tipped employees are diligently keeping records on all tipped income, including cash, and paying taxes to fund society like the rest of us.

There are already robots that deal blackjack. It's called video blackjack. It's very unpopular (same with craps). People like to play live table games.

I get imputed income, which is an agreement between the IRS and the casino that my taxable income will be that much. I have explicit authority to not report any tip income in addition to my W-2 on line 1 of form 1040.

Maybe you're not understanding this... the W-2 income is the base pay PLUS imputed income. No tips means I'm paying taxes on nonexistent income. If no one tips, the table games will go away and you'll be stuck playing video BJ and bubble craps.

Not!
We do not tip in Europe, and still have table games and all.

Tips is an obsolete way of paying workers, and America is somehow backward in this respect. I guess that is because they think unions and defending the workers is some communist treason! 😆😂🤣

Seriously, when tips give way to decent salary, you’ll have a more stable revenue, less stress and less bitching from tippers and tipped. Also, you get more recognition in terms of social protection (unemployment benefits, retirement,…) Prices don’t go up, since people accept paying in ‘service fee’ what they paid in tips. In the case of casinos, that may imply less generous paytables but customers understand that they are sparing the tips meanwhile.
And overall, prices are more transparent and that is also a bonus to a market economy.

I sure wish this is an issue of "when."

And in the case of casinos, I hope that decent salary for floor workers means less generous salaries/bonuses for executives.

We don't allow stinky homeless people in the casino. Burners are no different except that they're stupid enough to actually pay lots of money to be stinky and dirty.

I'm going to have to call you out on that one...they stand next to me all the time and then mumble stuff under their breath when I bet the darkside.

As a former dealer, it's location, location, location. The worst place to get tips is at the crap table. Poker dealers pick up a tip at the end of every game.
The best things in life are not free.
