After three vacations to Europe in the last 10 years, my wife comes up with, I think, a good idea, maybe even a very good idea. For casinos that is.

She is a Roulette player and along with a few friends, has wasted, oops...I mean, spent many hours and days playing roulette. In Europe, it is by far the game of choice and there are many players that are into many ideas how to beat Roulette. I found it interesting and very amusing how many European players think they know what section or sectors the ball will drop in next. Many use tracking the last spins and some even use computers.

Idea:
Design a roulette wheel where, on every spin, the position of the numbers on the wheel get randomly distributed, either before the spin or during the spin. Im sure it can easily be done. At what cost? I do not know. Would the casinos use such a wheel? I do not know either. Most, but not all, use the electronic marquees at a considerable cost, that I am sure of, over the cost of just a plain roulette wheel.

Should it matter to a casino? maybe not, but they do make an effort to make their roulette wheels as random as possible.

I'm about 99% certain most of you can gather why I made this thread. We know the value of making our wives happy.

"Design a roulette wheel where, on every spin, the position of the numbers on the wheel get randomly distributed, either before the spin or during the spin" >>> I did threads on this in the past. What I was thinking (I have heard of this but never saw a pic yet) is to have a wheel where the outer ring (of numbers) can be lifted and rotated in either direction. As few or as many 'pockets' as floor (not the dealer, lol) desires. Of course this would not be done on every spin. Maybe once an hour, I dont know?

This would mess up ANY method players (myself included) and would mess up the AP (cough) crackpots. Lets say there was a small bias (cough) on the 36 13 00 27. After the rotation, where is it now? lol Time to start all over looking for it. I know, I know, look for a little scratch. Ken

Its coming, just wait. It will be a real wheel and constantly changing electronic numbers where the static numbers are now. When the ball falls into a slot, the numbers freeze. If your method depends on true randomness, it won't matter.

A new game invention must add something that is both new and considerably "different and fun," or that is a big fix to an existing problem. The wheel numbers are random as it is now, with both the wheel and the ball spinning in opposite directions. Besides, the players would like to follow and track the numbers on the wheel as it gets closer to settling down. Her idea would actually take this away.

the games already fucked enough as it is! if you start to make the game digital, the casino would only install weight sensors under the numbers ect and create prorgams to weight the chips placed on the curtain numbers, and have the "random number generater" calculate the ball and dodge all the big bets, if not all of them!

i would much rather see it stay mechanical if they change it in any way, like maybe 3 numbers in a circle that spin while the wheel spins ect.

If you're looking for something "new" and "different" in roulette, check out TCS John Huxley's Double Action. FYI: TSC John Huxley is the premier manufacturer of casino roulette wheels and displays.

Admin note: removed image www.djteddybear.com/images/double_action.png

According to the website, the two number wheels spin in opposite directions while the ball is also spinning. Quite frankly, I have no idea how that would work. One of my goals when I come to Vegas for G2E is to see this thing in action - as well as to try to get TCS John Huxley interested in my Poker For Roulette idea.

I think the casinos would like the idea because it utterly eliminates mechanical wheel bias. I had the same idea back in 2009 but didn't pursue it because a preliminary search turned up too much related art.

However, I'm not sure players would go for it. Many roulette players place their bets based on clusters or sections of the wheel (e.g. voisins, tiers, orphelins, neighbors) and those would be eliminated by a random wheel ordering.

Casinos could also add new side bets.

Maybe a 5 number straight, as in poker, or any X number straights, according to the final wheel number distribution.
There you go DJ another poker for roulette idea to toy with.

The European players I would agree would not like the change but they would love other betting choices. Here in the US the 00 wheel dominates, so I would think few would not play if not given a choice.

Randomizing the numbers on the wheel would also add an element of distrust.

I mean, if the casino goes that route, and assuming the payouts were the same, why would a player prefer it over a stand-alone Roulette slot machine?

A 5 number straight is already part of Poker For Roulette. As far as "X number straights", as I mentioned in the thread about the idea, I recently added a four spin math page, as well as single zero math for both four and five spin combinations. I'm on the fence, but I think I'm also going to add three and two spin math.

Paytables and simulations for all of this are coming soon.

And thanks for thinking of me.
:)

On the flip side, if you were thinking of straights being a side bet all by themself, they don't hit enough to make it compelling.

As I learned when I tried pitching my Hit It Again idea, among other things, new bets have to pay of frequently enough to create compelling excitement.

What if it were randomly distributed, but the players would take turns "shooting" the ball into the spinning disc (like a pinball or pachinko machine)? The illusion of control would appeal to many, giving the game a "craps" like interaction.

The game has appeal because people think they can predict what will happen. The most ingenious thing that casinos ever did to roulette is to add the signs that show the last 20 or so outcomes. People like to see trends and when they do, they will wager. I had a friend who would watch the signs, then when one had a large number of red, he would go and bet black. Even though he told me he knew the outcomes were independent, he still deep down believed that there were more black draws coming up. As soon as you eliminate this ability to "predict," you will lose those players.

I like Ayecarumba's idea, though. Give people more illusion and they will like the game more.
I heart Crystal Math.
