Hi.

I hit a nice jackpot Friday night. I was playing a 10 play triple double game with a single 12x multipler at the $0.25 denomination. Luck was on my side... On that hand I got 4oak aces with a kicker. 4000 coins x 12 = $12,000. Fun!

I was a little surprised as many people showed up as they did for that handpay. It was 5 I think. 3 people in suits and 2 people in casino uniform. They showed up fast too... 20 - 30 seconds.

Anyway, my wife said in their presence that we need to get a picture of that jackpot. Naturally they didn't like that and we were informed photography is prohibited. Thanks darling! :-)

What surprised me is that after doing the paperwork and unlocking the machine, I was told that I had to take another spin to clear the jackpot from the machines screen.

I thought about questioning that but after a few seconds of consideration I figured gambling an extra $12.50 wasn't that big of a deal since I just won 12k. Naturally I lost that spin.

Anyway... The more I think about it, out of principal, I think that casino was out of line and they owe me $12.50. what do you guys think?

On a related note, when I get a handpay I'm always asked if I want it all in cash or check & if I want both state and federal taxes withheld. I usually get a check and have all taxes withheld. Is there any advantage I'm giving up with this choice?

Thanks

If you give up fed. tax, then you're essentially losing that money up front and hoping to get it back later, come tax time. Obviously depends on your situation and how you do your taxes, but I'd say almost certainly always better to not do fed. tax when you're getting paid, then just pay taxes on it later. You should be (I do, at least), write off losses against W2G's so I'm not paying 28% or whatever the hell it is on all jackpots.

If you don't want to play another hand, just cash out and leave the machine. They can easily open the machine and clear the jackpot manually. I've done it several times....usually if they're being dicks about something.

They ask you to clear the jackpot so that some other person can't walk up to the machine and claim they just hit it. But you can refuse, and they'll clear it manually.

But the tax question is really a personal choice. Even if you know you're gonna be able to write it off with your losses, having it withheld for some other reason is your option.

Wow thats different than any place ive gambled on the east coast.

I won a $20k and $25k jackpot this year and both times the casino asked me if i wanted to take a picture. First time i even said i thought photography wasnt allowed and they laughed and said not for jackpots. I should put it up on my Facebook and send it to my friends

And they didnt want to clear the machine as they wanted people to know i had just won. They asked if i wanted to cash out. My win was announced over the loudspeaker bout 5 minutes later. "We have another jackpot winner. $20000 on the green machine. Congratulations to ..."

They also made me wait a few minutes for cameras to verify it was me something they said occurs over $5k. So i dont understand all that about someone else claiming they won if the machine isnt cleared out. Seems a high speed way to being banned from a casino

On Ultimate X, you'd want to play the next hand anyways at the $12.50 rate because you have multipliers and it's positive EV to do so. It's kind of like vulturing your own hand, but not really.

Personally I don't think paying taxes upfront is good. I always want to be the guy that beats the IRS and if I am lucky enough to die before April 15 they will never get my money. I win.
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

That assumes two things. 1. I paid for the 12x in the first place and 2. I was playing UX.

I did not consider the chance I might die before April...

If you are in the habit of making interest free loans, there are better candidates than the gubernmint.

I guess that suggests I could deposit more into a Ally savings account and make 1.25% instead of letting Uncle Sam hold it for free.

Makes sense.

Windsor used to ask people to play another spin to clear the jackpot as well. I once saw a guy hit the jackpot on the Silver and Gold slot machine and after being paid and asked, he spun and hit the exact same jackpot!!

Playing a single quarter on the next spin would clear the jackpot off the screen. And you could say, "If I lose this, I'm taking $0.25 back from your tip!"

And out of principle, you should leave some multipliers for us.

Good point on the one coin idea. Good luck with me leaving multipliers behind!
