My local casino has a good JW2 game (the 99.92% paytable, eligible for promos and freeplay) so I am trying to learn the strategy.

WTF?

The Wizard's video poker trainer (with warnings) is helpful, as always (Thanks Wiz and JB!) but this is going kind of slowly. I think I am getting used to picking the middle card that has the fewest penalty cards (that's pretty much the strategy when you have nothing, right?) but honestly I find the whole game pretty confusing.

Is this just a tough one to learn? Does anyone have any tips on learning it? Does it all make sense in some way that I just don't see?

you're prétty much doing it right. thé order of strength I use is 7,8,6,9,T,5, J,4. A flush and/or straight penalty tilts the situation. If the 6 is less penalized than the 7 I hold it instead.

Unless you plan to play the game full-time, I'm a big advocate of simplicity. Which strategy are you using? The Wizard's strategy maker is admirable for its accuracy and clarity, but it's not exactly designed for simplicity.

I would completely disregard the exceptions. The basic strategy alone yields nearly 99.90%, which is only a couple hundredths short of perfection. Beyond that, you may need to streamline the notation for your own convenience. A possible example would be classification of straight flush draws, commonly grouped by number of gaps and/or high cards. In Joker 2-pair, there are no high cards, so that's a convenience :)

I am trying to play perfectly, as always, including exceptions. I use the trainer for this. When it warns me, I hit the analyze button and see how much the play cost me. If I'm not sure why the other holding is worth more, I'll scroll over and see where it comes from (it makes more flushes, or it makes more straights, or whatever). The middle cards are just one big exception as far as I can tell.

Using this method, I was able to learn DDB within a few hours of practice, and JoB even faster. I understand that this is a more complicated strategy -- I just need to understand it. Once I do, remembering it will be easy.

If you've got the intellect, then go for it.

But the benefit seems very slight.

Yeah, I wouldn't dare with exceptions here. But more power to Axiom, obv.

I hate this game. Even when it gets above 100%. Wild + a 9 being correct? Meh...

You can do it. I had to cram to learn All-american 103% on a Airplane with double hand-pays $5 denom. I had it down in a short period of time. I forgot it afterwords until the next time.
