Darkside abuse

Hi. I was just wondering if anyone has ever taken abuse for being a darkside bettor in craps?
I was playing this weekend and the table was cold so I said screw it and bet the darkside for over an hour. This one jerk on the opposite end of the table was, I think, trying to toss them hard enough to hit me. Anyone deal with that?
Also, and this is even better, when the dice came to me another person said that since I was betting the darkside I had no right to be the shooter. He even complained to the boxman. Happily, he loaded up on the pass line/come area and I wiped him out. :-).
Any similar experiences out there?

Whew! Who hasn't?
Many here can show the scars, even though every knowledgeable craps player understands everyone is playing against the Casino and not against one another. (At least, that's probably the case with WoV members, right?)
Example: A shooter's come-out roll sets a point, and a second player then makes a Come bet. The shooter next rolls a 7 and loses his pass-line bet while the second player wins his Come bet. The second player wasn't playing "against" the shooter. But, somehow many players feel DP and DC players are "different," and fair game for any and all insults.

Literally every player that's ever bet the DP/DC I'm sure has experienced some type of abuse from superstitious idiots that don't understand the game very well... to the extent they don't even understand WHO they're really playing against.
I haven't played craps in a while, but the few times I have I've had players openly root against me, say to their friends next to them simply ridiculous things they knew I could hear like "this idiot is screwing up the table by betting the opposite of us!" and all kinds of things. Funny enough, perhaps because I'm younger and stupider, or because I usually have a couple buddies with me to boot, I'm never rude but when someone goes over the line I will obnoxiously start just rooting for my bets, like anyone else at the table. Just so happens that when you hear "7 out!" and I start cheering for some reason it stings them that much more.

I try to stay low key when I'm playing the wrong way, but have experienced the standard grumbling, sideways glances, etc. The more fun tables are where the right side players are lighthearted about it and you can get into a friendly, shit-talking rivalry but everyone knows it's all in good fun. I've had that interaction a few times. Most fun was one night at Paris after I had visited one of the ice bars earlier in the night (it was at Monte Carlo at the time) and was still wearing the fuzzy hat with the ear flaps. I was playing dark side at one end of the table and a bunch of young energetic guys were at the other end and we had fun hollering etc. I don't recall if I was up or not after that session (was v. drunk).

I skip the don't pass and play the don't come after the point is established. This way you won't collide with the shooter. You can even root for the 7 on the next come out.

I suppose that's one way to do it, but I'd rather play the way I want to.
He's the funny thing that I can never wrap my mind around. I'm the shooter, I seven out and win, yet I still lose the dice. That never seemed fair to me.

When I play the don't it's usually on the DC so I'm not bucking the shooter. Then I lay my odds like a Sherman tank climbing hedgerows in France after D-Day.

I often play only the DC too, but especially for the shooters near me. I'll do the DC exclusively if I don't like the table minimum, to cut down on the bets per hour. And I just pass the dice, usually.
Some players don't like it just because it's darkside, DC or not ... but for the most part on the east coast you dont seem to get much flak for playing the don't
as far as that Sherman tank image, you know the Germans found the hedgerows made good defensive positions

I remember one night in Tahoe, when I was standing stick right 1, with a dark-side player at stick left 1. We joshed all night, both behind and in front of the stickman.
One time, Mr. Darksider was the shooter and set a point of 6. I placed a hard-6 bet for him, and he just said, "That's cold!" Another time, he set a point of 9, and after a bunch of no-resolution rolls I tossed down a chip and called a stupid bet I would normally never play: "Hop the 6-3." The shooter didn't understand that and got a full explanation from the stick. Sure enough, next roll was 6-3, and he stepped behind the stickman wearing a big smile to give me a high-five. He lost his wager but enjoyed the interaction.
Somewhere on this forum I described another time when both Darksiders and rightsiders were winning together, with numerous points being made and lots of don't-come bets paying out on come-out sevens.
The whole idea of the game is to have fun.

I don't play craps much. When I do play it's usually pass line with double odds. I occasionally play the DC but not in the same session as my pass line wagering.
Perhaps the most important thing to remember when playing the DP is to not celebrate when the shooter sevens out. Quiet blank stoicism.
I've never had another player take issue with my playing the don't. And I've never had anyone give me static for buying in at a table during an established point (just don't hold up the game).

What do you consider to be abuse?
I’ve been playing craps for 20 years, and I’ve not seen this dark side abuse that people sometimes talk about. I’ve played in a lot of places, not just Las Vegas. This DS ‘abuse’ is perhaps a bit exaggerated. Most of the time, it’s just right side bettor saying under their breath that they hope the Don’t bettor loses.
The only abuse that I’ve witnessed is when people put their hands in the play area when the dice are in play, and during the buy in (bc it breaks the flow of the shooter, allegedly). I can’t recall a single instance of DS abuse.
Most of the time, DS bettors are quiet and not celebrating when they win.
The only DS betters that actively and loudly celebrate are usually the stout guys or the old timers who just don’t give a sh*t, and people tend to leave them alone.
My friends and I also occasionally play the dark side, and when the table is ice cold and we’re wining, we don’t hold back our celebrations either. We paid to play, we should be allowed to be happy when we win. If you don’t like it, play the DS with us. No one has ever given us a hard time.

A George and his wife were playing and when the dice came to me the stick intoned "From the Don't, Hoping they won't" whereupon George and his wife immediately left the table thus undoubtedly endearing me to the toke-hungry crew.

I see it every day, but not against me. I am here to make money so the low key thing is good. Unfortunately after the first 100-200 visits, everybody knows you. Hope you were nice at least most of the time!

There is no reason to be a sourpuss about abuse of dark side players or anything else in a casino. Casinos are full of winners and losers, most of whom have been drinking. A bit of leeway should be accorded to all, players and staff alike. Sure some nonsense should be nipped in the bud particularly if its coming from the crew but this Right Side/Wrong Side stuff is no big deal.Quote: rushdl.
