Saw story that said Bovada was paying for under 2:20 while BetOnLine was paying over 2:20. Apparently when she finished the National Anthem's last word, "brave", it was at 2:19. After the conclusion of the National Anthem, she sung additional words, "the brave", which took her past 2:19.

A few questions.. How would you rule?
1. The Anthem is over after the singer finishes the last word in it. Anything the singer says, mouths, sings, gyrates, twerks after such is irrelevant. Under
2. The Anthem is not over until the singer is done singing, regardless of if those are the actual lyrics in the Anthem. Over

On a somewhat more serious note, do you think Bovada had more money bet on the Over thus ruled Under, and BetOnLne had more money bet on Under, and thus ruled Over?

I would rule Under if I had to. If asked to explain, I would state that the bet begins at the first word, and ends at the last word, and any words before or after are not germane to the bet.

I agree with your analysis but that would have to be stipulated in the rules. Personally, if I was going to bet on this bet, I would have to know what constitutes it ending or else, well, this could happen. "The National Anthem" is a set list of words, if the singer adds more, then that's on their own, but she was done singing The National Anthem at 2:19 then it sounds.

It would surprise me if the site that ruled "over" had more money the other way... "Terms and Conditions... We reserve all rights!"

Hmm. I saw a private bet go to the over and I'm inclined to agree. To me, it is the performance of the song and the song isn't over till she stops singing.

There was a similar controversy on Coldplay. I bet that their first song would not be "Yellow." The singer sang the first 2 words of Yellow and then the band launched into some other song. Several books paid both sides. 5dimes graded it a loser. Of course, that's where I bet.

First, my compliments to Lady Gaga who knocked it out of the park.

Here is the video to judge for yourself:

By my count, she started at 0:25 and ended at 2:46, for a total time of 2:21.

She finished all the words of the Star Spangled Banner at 2:36. She then repeated some words which took her until 2:46. Your interpretation is the the National Anthem is not over until the singer is done singing, regardless of what she continues to sing, I assume?

So I just watched the video on YouTube... she started singing (the moment I first heard her voice for the song) at 25 seconds of the video exactly... and stopped with the "literal words" at 2:35, for 2 minutes 10 seconds. If you're counting the "extra" of the brave then she stopped at 2:47, for 2 minutes and 22 seconds.

I'm not sure where the 2:19 ruling came from? It seems like they're taking when the performer stopped, and not the words, which to me is still clearly "over" 2:20.

Video I watched (since Mike's link didn't work for me - You have to watch it on YouTube): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tyqkN3zezso

The point is it either stopped before 2:20 or after 2:20, depending on whether you count her extra words after she was done with all the generally accepted lyrics.

It ain't over till the fat lady sings.

Or, in this case, till the thin lady stops singing.

The folks at my party said that Beyonce was lip syncing just as a matter of course (due to the extensive dance routine), but to me there were no obvious indicators (mouth out of sync with the music, etc.). If she was, she did a good job of making it look live.

I almost always assume everything "live" is lip synced these days. My question would be how could they make the performers microphones sound so good yet almost every referee has static and breaks up when explaining a penalty?
At my age, a "Life In Prison" sentence is not much of a deterrent.

I'm pretty sure she was lip synching. You would hear her breathing if she was singing live and doing all that dancing.

Sometimes we get together to watch games that we have a lot riding on it. For SBS we got a comped suite and had a get together to watch the big game. We usually make side bets on everything and anything.

I wanted the over thinking she's a rebel and a showman. Djatc wanted the under so he put up $10 or $20 I can't remember. Two people got their cell phones out and started their timers. Both people stopped their timers during the pause. He thought he had won, I yelled she's still singing.

I got pied. IMO it isn't over till its over.

PS. He lost the coin flip to.

She sang "brave" again after "home of the brave." In my opinion, it was part of her performance and thus should count. I might add the planes didn't fly over until the final "brave," adding to it being part of the intended performance. I definitely go with the over.

Timing that flyover is HARD. We did it with the Daytona 500 every year (also the Coke Zero / Firecracker 400). That said, the Blue Angels missed the timing, no idea why. (They usually rehearse this to the second, because they have to hit a point 7-10 miles away, crossing it at a particular airspeed, cued to a particular word in the song, to make it work; it's different at every arena.) I thought she was very on-the-ball to pick up the little coda and give them the finish they wanted (with the planes drowning out the "brave" note) when they didn't show up.

As to the bet, my opinion is that she went over, because that was part of the performance, even if it was a coda/repeat, but was very interested (asked this exact question yesterday in the props thread) to hear where you pros came down on it.

I agree with Wiz and BBB. The bet should be for the time of the performance, not just the time of how long it took to sing the official words and arrangement.
