I can only imagine they have made a significant amount on this and other things and it went un noticed for a long time. That's the only reason I can think of why they would be so blatant about it.

I'm wondering if someone could make an algorithm to find out where the corrupt money is going and take advantage of this type of stuff themselves without being involved in the fixing. There has to be other fixing situations going on.

Agreed. Any individual sports where the competitor is paired up against their opponent are ripe for fixing (like boxing and tennis). I suppose golf match play could be would be another opportunity as well, if not for the lack of events. I wouldn't be surprised to see this hit mixed martial arts at some point too.

I bet on boxing often and I'm pretty sure it's very rarely fixed for gambling purposes these days. There are other ways in which it is crooked. The judges will favor the money making star, or the promoter's prospect. But, you really can't bet that much on most fights so it's not worth fixing them. The fights you could bet, say, $100,000 on involve so much money that nobody is going to throw them for $100,000.

You can bet a ton of money on tennis though.

One argument I hear saying that matches aren't fixed because the player would have more to lose than the monetary gain justifies. This may be true in some cases but I believe there are cases where blackmail is involved. Even the biggest stars could be subject of a blackmail scandal.

It's possible that someone who fixed on the way up could be blackmailed on that basis, but I don't know how likely it is. The blackmailer couldn't release the info without incriminating themselves. For both match fixing and blackmail. Also, they would have to be a special kind of scumbag to turn out their profitable cheating partner like that. Such people exist, but that requirement makes it less likely. Could happen though.

If we're talking about a gay lover or something, it's unlikely that they would be very savvy about betting. Easier to just ask for a suitcase full of cash.

I will say, this stuff seems to be taken far less seriously in Europe than it is here. Do we now see why Pete Rose cannot be cut any slack?

There are a gazillion rules in baseball
There is only one rule baseball chooses to emphasize over all the other gazillion rules.
Its on EVERY clubhouse wall in plain sight.
Every baseball player sees this rule every single game. Its unavoidable. No gambling on baseball.

Other sports, including team sports, are easier to fix than you'd think. DRich hinted at the real reason pro sports are scripted. They're still fun to watch, of course, but some of these sports fans have lost they damn minds. I have "Raiders Commitment to Excellence" tatted above my eyebrows but would never do anything real crazy.

Not clear what you are saying. An army of blackmailers are scripting most pro sports?

Should be easy to figure out who and get rich then! Though it's odd that nobody's ever spilled the beans, even once. Or refused the blackmailers and gone public.

If anything, this article illustrates why this is almost certainly not the case. Bookies ain't gonna be like, "oh, $2 million came in on a 20 point dog and they won outright, which has happened before with this team. Oh well, s happens I guess!"

Also, as I mentioned, in the US this stuff isn't treated so lightly. If there was evidence against NBA players like that against these tennis players, they would get more than a disapproving frown.

I do think there's probably shaving in college. If a point guard for Boise State with no pro prospects can coordinate some bets with friends and family and make a few grand on the side, it would be hard to catch. So it probably happens. But you also have to factor in that few people know much about gambling, even on a recreational level. Even that would be harder to execute than it sounds.

here are some quotes

That site is 5dimes.com, which operates out of Costa Rica,

Tony Williams, who founded 5Dimes in 1997, said he offers the lines because customers demand them.

“The customers who bet the games don’t have a problem with morality. If the customers are happy, I am happy,” Williams said. “Walk to any street corner in the United Kingdom. You can bet on under 16-year-old soccer events, boys or girls. Any match, just about any amount.

More stuff. A blogger figured out who the players are. Another looked at the most famous one, Hewett, and found that nothing all that suspicious was really afoot.

Surprising that the original analysis didn't throw out off market openers. e.g. some euro site that probably has low limits and bans winning players opens with a bad number. The consensus number at close is very different from that number and the player the market favored wins. Very little reason to think that is fishy.

Dimes takes bets on the big FB games, including Bishop Gorman. I think limits are $250. Never bet them myself since I know very little but it must be pretty soft. If you know some guy who is involved in college recruiting or an expert in HSFB for some other reason, bet you could do well.

Bookies very suspicious regarding an obscure 1st round mixed doubles match Australian open
3 similar other matches around the same time together only generated 2k .
Lara Arruabarrena and David Marrero against Andrea Hlavackova and Lukasz Kubot had 25k action heavy on 1 side
Bookies stopped action on the match. The heavy side won.
