So I entered a tournament for the first time (other than online) yesterday, and I'm doing half way decent. Then I get down to 5k chips (standard 10k chip tournament), and I get dealt Q-8 of clubs, I figured I'd call the blind for 1600 and if I don't have anything good I'll just fold, so the flop winds up being K-Q-K, and a guy bets 2,000, and I figure "screw it, I'm going all in", he calls, and he's got K-Q, and as a final kick in the balls, I get dealt another queen on the turn. So was it a bad idea to go all in or was I just unlucky? I'm thinking about trying out the Heartland Poker Tour when it comes to River City but I don't want to be making bad moves, so what do you guys think? am I just a noob who needs a lot more practice or was that just bad luck?

Playing the hand was the mistake, not the going all in.

Generally if a player leads out on the flop with the board paired, he has a set

You have 3 big blinds. It's either fold or all-in preflop. I probably fold unless I'm the button/cutoff/maybe hijack or the small blind with no one else in the pot when I shove.

I'd want to play you in the HPT given your original post, and I haven't played a live tourney in a couple of years....lol

I just meant, he thinks he shouldn't have gone all in. I think he shouldn't have played it at all so there would have been no decision to go all in.

So basically what you guys are saying is given the situation I was in, if I wouldn't go all in pre-flop with the hand, I shouldn't play that hand at all? that makes sense. now my next question is, say I had the BB during that hand and everybody just called it and THEN I was at that point. go all in or check/fold?

In that case I think it's closer. If there only a couple of others in the pot I probably shove and hope everyone else has nothing to call you with. If it's 4 or 5 handed, I probably check/fold and shove if a free turn card Isn't an Ace.

for me it also depends on where we are in relation to the money. If we are 1 spot out then I am holding tight. If I am very short stacked and there are a ton of people left then I may take a shot with an all in from a blind.

If on the bubble I'd be much more inclined to open shove here. If you're short stacked or the chip leader you should be aggressive on the bubble. If you're a medium stack you should be cautious.

With an M=2 here I'd open shove Q8s. Its not like you have all the time in the world. As played, it was bad.
