Pretty simple question: do you wait for the roll to be over before you buy-in at the craps table?

My answer is "sometimes." I will try to wait for the roll to be over but if:

1) Other people are buying-in mid-roll, I will do so as well
2) If the roll is going on and on, hitting come bets or 6 & 8 often, I dont' want to miss out, so...
3) If there is some delay over payments, new dealers, or any other kind, I'll take advantage of it.

I try to wait until the puck is off; about half of the time, that is on a seven out. There are times I'll toss a small amount of money for a bet (as close to the actual dollar amount as possible) on what appears to be a hot roll. They don't come around often enough to miss them while being overly polite.

I keep my hands off the table and watch where the dice are...if they head out, I'm done betting and my hands are back.

I know a few people that do this intentionally. After delays over payments, new dealers, etc...they call "off" their bets and either make a come bet with horn or lay the point...and usually win right away.

How do you take advantage of it?

I mean I make my nuy-in mid-roll if things stop due to some kind of delay.

For instance, at the Palace Station the action stopped due to a new dealer getting confused over payments. So while the box and stick explained things to her, I bought in withthe other dealer, even though it was mid-roll.

I never wait. I hate superstitious craps players with the same vehemence that they hate me with when I buy in in the middle of the roll. CrapsForever, we might get into a fight if I bought in at your table :) That said, I will wait if specifically asked politely, "will you wait?" Otherwise, I don't give an F.

I just wait. I'll walk by the table (but not too close though lol) and see if the puck's on or off. If it's on, I'll just step back a bit and wait for the seven-out or point to be made (I am close enough to hear the dealer call the roll at least). I don't care to come across "that one guy" who throws a fit when someone buys in the middle of a roll, so I go out of my way to avoid that situation. I know that it's my right to step to the table whenever I want, but like I said in the other thread, I'm generally a non-confrontational person. I'll also say though, that while I do keep my emotions in check 98% of the time, I don't want to get to that 2% point where stuff starts popping off.

You should really wait but I usually just buy in as I walk to the table. I don't necessarily place a bet. People hate it but I figure what sense is it to watch money being made and not being a part of it!! Haven't seen anyone share some of their winnings with me the couple of times I waited and watched people make $2-3GS as I watched.

I wait til a decision is reached on the point.

Craps players are superstitious, and one is NOT to buy in mid roll.

It can slow the game and affect a shooter's "momentum," or so it is claimed.

I always wait as well, but never realized there was a superstition involved with this; I'm pretty much strictly a pass-line-and-odds player, so why bother buying in if I'm not going to put up a bet right away?

In my opinion, Craps players being superstitious is a fallacy. They are being "superstitious" based on the events they see take place far too often.

Shooter's "momentum" is a real phenemenon...when you are playing craps...you can almost see when a person is about to 7-out. It's hard to explain but I can feel most 7-outs before they occur...most of the time it's too late to call my bets "off" because the shooter is about to roll the dice.

As the shooter; it's easy for me to stop my roll when I "feel" a 7-out about to occur and call my bets "off" and either place a big come bet or hop the 7's.

People can call it "selective memory" or whatever they want. I know the events that precede a 7-out when I am shooting the dice:

1st Roll after the point is established (I am the all-time leader in Point Established, Seven Outs)

Buying in during my roll (Money on the table) when the "puck" is on

Late Bets

Throwing consecutive horns

Dice off the table

If none of these events occur, I am going to make you lots of money!!!

It can't be "selective memory" if it happens in every single craps session. That's called a pattern.

I'll wait for a decision about 4 out of 5 times. As I get ready to start a session I check minimum bet from a casual distance before walking up to the rail, hopefully beside stick on the right or around by the dealer to the sticks left. i'll have my buy-in and player's card in hand ready to drop. At this point a dealer will invite me to join and i'll make my choice similar to what's been expressed here; a lull in play or a disturbance to the flow. Never in the middle of a smooth session. Never really thought about it but I always start with a pass-line bet anyways.

I think you are right about the 7 out about 1/6th of the time.

I am not superstitious either but I play along:

- I like to throw my dice at the don't bet when I am shooting especially if he is being snarky about it or is winning lots.
- I only buy in/cash out when there is a stoppage in play when the puck is off or when there is a long delay (dice out, argument over payout).
- I make sure my bets are out of dice's way when possible.
- I never say the dirty words like "Seven", "Big Red" when a point is in progress.
- I tip.

I always thought it polite to wait (which is what I have answered) but accept there are times when one can buy in during a break. However as my first bet will usually be a Pass bet, I'm happy to wait. (I know it's technically better to play Don't but nearly always play Do.)

IMO it's always bad form to buy in when it disturbs the timing of the shooter. If you can't wait for a decision you can at least drop a C-note and make a couple of quick bets that won't take much if any time to execute. What always irritates are those rude miscreants that want to color up a wad of cash or a marker and then make place bets as well as prop bets. I love it if/when they get whacked on the next toss.

As I understand it, and have done w/ no repercussions, is to buy-in when the dice are in the center after a roll. As a Pl/Come bettor, I can make a come bet during the roll w/o waiting until a seven-out or point. To each his own. IOW, I voted, "No."

when it disturbs the timing of the shooter.

Sometimes crews are under instructions to get a buy in done no matter what the effect on the shooter is. The Fresh Blood guy may be ignorant or rude or whatever, but its his money that the casino wants, the shooter's preferences and 'craps traditions' do not count.

Also, many casinos simply forbid 'cash plays' and insist you wait. Times have changed. Not always for the best.

If a roll is going on I stand at the rail with my buy-in amount displayed clearly at my fingertips (no part of which in any way is past or lower than the rail), and I watch the dealer nearest me. When he motions that he'll accept the buy-in and I'm sure there's a pause in the action (i.e. shooter was not just given the dice) then we make the transaction.

I prefer if this happens sooner than later.

Yes. Unless a new player has become so drunk or so excited or is normally boorish, the thing to do is to wait until the base dealer indicates he will take your buy in money. Its the crews decision and timing of the game is what the stickman does subject to the skills of the base dealers and the supervisory commands of the boxman.

Not all shooters get the least bit perturbed if they are interrupted. I try not to. I simply wait for the stickman to push me the dice, then I pick them up and throw them. What's so difficult about that.

I try to buy in when it is proper to do so but sometimes things do go awry due to companion pressure or my alcohol levels, but at all times it is the crew that is in charge. I don't tell them to pay me off or who else they should be paying off. I stand there, make my bets quietly if possible, but distinctly and I pick up my winnings if I am lucky.
