I'm heading to Vegas in a couple of weeks and want to learn craps. I have $500 BR for two full days and hope to play 8-12 hours total. I'm also bringing my girlfriend who is not a gambler but is curious.

Do you guys recommend any good $1 tables with good odds, on the Strip or Downtown? Looking for a place that isn't a dump, goes easy on beginners and might even comp a low-roller like myself.

Thanks!

$3 El Cortez (10x odds)
$1 Western (2x odds a dump and go during the daylight hours if you go there, before the vampires come out)

The above confirmed as of last weekend and both of those are downtown.

$2 Slots-a(o)-fun (2x odds) I think, near Circus Circus-opposite end of strip from Luxor, across the street from Riviera.-unconfirmed

If you're gonna have a car, Joker's Wild. $1 craps weekdays, $2 weekends.

Slots a Fun has eliminated all it's table games.

The best bet is the El Cortez. They have a low limits on all table games and although it's not a fancy and glitzy casino, it's decent and not a dump like the Western.

Last year Rapid Craps was $3 minnimum, 3,4,5X odds at Bill's

The electronic interface and slow pace might be better for a beginner. Plus you can play seating down.

I thought you had to play $5 to get the 100x odds, otherwise $3 is 10x or 20x or something like that?

What's the difference when you have $500 to get you through 12 hours of play?

So with $3 craps, what odds bet (if any) should you be playing so that your $500 bankroll will last 12 hours? 1x? 2x? I'd assume doing come bets would be out of the question as you're going for maximum time at the table plus you're better off putting the come bet money towards increasing the odds bet.

I think you'll have a better time playing $5 craps with 2x odds at a nicer place. A $500 BR should be fine for that. The difference in EV over the course of 10 hours playing $5 with 2x odds versus $3 at 3, 4, 5x odds is so low, that I say just stay on the strip and head to a nicer place like Excalibur, Tropicana, Hooters, IP, and you should be able to find a $5 table. If not there, then downtown at four queens or something close by should work.

If you start playing a bunch of numbers, you may head into risk of ruin territory.

If you're lucky and you're there a while, you might get a buffet. Maybe.

Take your girlfriend to the Western and she is liable to become your ex-girlfriend instantly.

If your girlfriend would prefer the Strip or Near It, then the El Cortez will be a trip to Downtown, otherwise its fine.

You might get five dollar tables during the day and perhaps early evening on the Strip at some places, no guarantees.

Attend any noontime or early afternoon lessons you can. They are free and you often get a wee bit of reward such as match play or something like that.

Daytime tables tend to be slower and dealers tend to be more relaxed than during the hectic night games that can get crowded and hectic.

I had a good time playing at the Monte Carlo for a few hours last time I was in Vegas. Can't recall if it was a $5 or $10 game though.

Too funny!!

I agree with Flea. With his advice of doing your gaming during the day, especially if you're getting your feet wet with the game. Night games become crazy sometimes and you want to know wtf is going on.

I said it(Western) was a dump, but they server PBR..woohoo.

Thanks to all of you guys very much. The daytime classes are a great idea, good way to get the flow of the game when everyone's a bit more chill.

I do have a vehicle. Is the Boulder Strip worth checking out? Been to the Strip a bunch but never downtown or beyond and we wanted to do some exploring. Heard good things about Station Casinos and wondered if signing up for their loyalty program would be worth it with just a couple days in Vegas.

Thanks again for your advice! Love this site

sign up for a players card from every casino that you enter, even if you think its a dump and will never go there again.

Boulder Strip is great for slot players. SamsTown has 10x odds and these exotic craps bets (SmallTallAll) for those who want to take a wild fling with a buck. Food is okay there too, so are the rooms. I said "okay" and maybe its a bit more than that even. But just because the table is going to be a bit low is it really worth a drive to get there?

You girlfriend is probably going to want the Strip since that is what most people think of when they hear "Vegas".

On a weekend, good luck finding anything but a $10 table. However, $5 should be found during the week at all but the major strip casinos. Casino Royale is kind of a dump, but a good place to play. Flamingo is classic (and so is the smell) and sometimes has $5. If you like the monorail, Las Vegas Hilton had a $5 table. Otherwise, Excalibur or Trop is your best place to find lower table mins.

And I agree with Flea, your girlfriend will want to be on the Strip.

Thanks guys. Much appreciated.

By the way, we've both been to the Strip a fair amount and are staying on the Strip. Otherwise I would not get laid.

That said, she's the kind of chick who wants to see the third world stuff (Downtown), so we may actually check out some of the dives for the hell of it. And maybe toss the dice a couple times too.

Will be practicing craps on Bodog for the next two weeks...

With a $500 bankroll, you could play at a $10 table, just take single odds. If you take ANY odds, you'll still be in better shape than NO odds.
I would imagine like the Orleans or a station casino would have an easy $5 game.

If you don't mind downtown, then check out the Plaza. They just re-opened, so hopefully the smoke hasn't set in too deep yet. You also need to stop by Binion's and pay homage to the once great craps Mecca. It won't be a dollar minimum, but you can still have a good time for $3 or $5.

Since you have a car, I recommend Sam's Town on the Boulder Strip over El Cortez or the Western. It isn't actually that much further than downtown, has a wide variety of games and dining options, and they have a laser show in the evenings. They also have a huge western clothing store if you're into punching cows, (or just want to look like someone who does.)

Note that $3 minimum place bets on the six or eight will not typically pay $3.50, usually they only pay even money until you bet $6.
