I set and throw in about 3 seconds

I have never timed myself but I select the nearest two of the five and I throw them. After that, I select two out of two and throw them. I do not kiss, caress, massage, fold, spindle or mutilate the dice. I do not speak to them and I do not speak to the table or crew. I just pick up the dice and throw them.

From time to time I hesitate because of the sudden appearance of arms at the other end of the table but that is just a courtesy to the dealer at that end. Usually, I just pick up the dice and throw them.

I've absolutely no objection if someone likes to set the dice or harbors a fantasy that his manipulations or incantations have any effect, I just don't want him to take forever to do it.

I set them the way I like, knowing it as not a bit to do with the outcome. Even if "dice setting" was proven to work, I would be a failure at it. I don't ever throw the dice twice in a row anywhere near the same way...too many funny people cracking me up most of the time...

The dealer trying to get 1,000 rolls an hour...screw you, dude...it is my roll unless you get the boss to kick me off the table...

The player wanting to hurry up...dude, we'll win or lose just as fast as I want right now. You roll your speed, I'll roll mine...

The drunk who keeps going back and finding five more dollars and then winning a couple of bets and in the process bugs every single person at the table...

The guy who criticizes every single shooter, even the one right beside him, but doesn't have the gonads to roll himself. Oh yeah, I am ALL OVER that dude every single time. I actually hope he is at the casino every time I go!

Anyway...set them, don't set them, think you influence, think they are totally random, whatever... Play your game at a decent speed and have a good time!!

Crap...it hit the pile of $1 chips at the end--really, sir, you can't bother getting two red ones? Seven out...new shooter coming out...

You're asking two different questions.

When given the 5 dice to choose from, I'll often grab them all, give them one little roll, then look for the two that are holding up signs that say "Pick me!" Total time about 3 seconds.

Then, and whenever the two dice are pushed my way, I'll just quickly rub my fingers on the felt, grab the dice and throw them. Maybe a second or so.

HOWEVER, any time that I pick up the dice, and there's a commotion somewhere, I'll put the dice back down, wait for whatever is going on to finish, then, start over, rub my fingers on the felt, etc. This is not so much because "I got rattled" but because I'm sending a message to the stick to not give me the dice if the betting isn't finished.

I am going to be more deliberate about accepting the dice when the other side is slower than my side and the stick is trying to "push" the game. Again, I could hit every hand and chip on the end and it would still be just as random of a roll as not hitting anything but the back wall BUT I just don't want hands in the action. I have gone as far as asking the consistent late better if they are done placing bets...

looked it up here, wow I was not remembering correctly myself

PS: chart about 1/3 of the way down. I was certainly not remembering one person at the table could be around 249 rolls

That's a hair under 14.5 second per roll.

Actually, that's not at all impossible. Just pay one player and give him back the dice.

And if the shooter simply pays to replace all bets after a 7-out, saving the dealer the time to clean the layout and replace the bets, then 14.5 seconds is downright achievable.

Unless the shooter is taking forever to set the dice on every roll...

I set the dice, but from the time they are pushed to me, to the time they leave my hand, it is about 5 seconds.

Before I grab the dice, I touch the felt in a slow, semi-circular motion (this helps increase blood flow and also heats up the throwing hand). Then I grab the dice....blow on them....then unleash my famous "tiger claw" throwing method. Rawr!! Dealers quiver in fear when I unleash the "Tiger Claw!!" Usually takes about 5 seconds or less.

I like to set the dice so that they are matched one on top of the other. I don't care about the orientation, I just find two sides that match, stack them up and let 'em fly. Probably does take right at 3 secs, maybe more, but never more than 5 secs. Most croupiers observe this behavior and tend to start pushing the dice to me with any pair showing after about the third or fourth roll....then it is definitely less than 3 secs.

The longest amount of time is taken in picking the two dice of the five. While it may appear that all the dice are completely identical, this is not in any way true. Due to the constant throwing of the dice, the hitting of them against the table, the back board, and even other people's hands, microscopic quantic particles are worn away from the surface of each die. Even a "new" set of dice has these quantic particles missing, as they are handled by the pit boss, or tossed into the holding bowl.

Thus, it is necessary for me to examine each of these dice in order to find the ones who are missing quantic particles on the sides I want them on. I try to be as quick as possible, but such microscopic examiniation does take time. Perhaps about 35-40 minutes.

Once the two dice are picked, I'm usually fairly quick about throwing them. After all, having already chosen those dice best suited to my purposes by microscopic examination of their sub-quantic missing particles, I know that I have beaten the odds by selecting the two dice that are most likely to result in rolls that favor my particular betting sytle. That being said, should one of the dice accidentally be thrown off the table, a new set of examinations must not be completed. After all, the simple asking of the same dice is no longer sufficient. The die's contact with the floor may have removed more subatomic particles, and a new examination, of all the dice, is now necessary to determine which two dies are now optimal.

I was wondering why some people bring an electron microscope with them to the craps table...

I'm usually pretty fast when shooting dice, and I definitely don't have any superstitions about it. Then again I'm a "7-out" machine, so maybe that's why.

And I never care if other people shoot slowly. It just means more free beer for me, and I find their goofy rituals at the craps table entertaining.

I think I've played at the same table with you in Vegas before!(LOL)

When the stick pushes the dice to me on the come out roll, I pick up all 5, dump them in front of me, choose 2 matching #s and toss them down the table. After that, I choose a set of numbers (it varies) to face up, twist them until I have matching #s facing me on the backside, and then try to toss them behind the pass line just in front of the back wall. I usually don't care where I stand at the table unless I feel like betting on the Dark Side, then I'll try to get close to the dealer. It seems to upset fewer people if I keep my Don't bets off to the side!

Several posters have mentioned that they are seven out machines. How about next time set the dice on sevens all the way around preferably using the 1's and 6's as the axis and then chucking them with equal force down the table. Can't hurt now can it?

@odiousgambit Thanks for the tip and sorry for not getting the signature right. To be honest, while I do put the site in my signature, I prefer it to be unobtrusive and definitely not part of the post itself.

@DeMango I am notorious among my gambling buddies for being an automatic 7-out, so your suggestion couldn't possibly hurt. I'll be in Vegas next week so I'll give it a try!

Doc -

For the record, it has JUST NOW occured to me what odiousgambit is referring to.

I originally thought he meant that it should be a clickable link. As I mentioned, WoV does not allow formatting codes in signatures, so no link.

I then thought he meant that it should include the http://

NOW if finally realize wha the problem is:

I stack the dice one on top of the other, make a counter clockwise motion on the table with dice in hand, yell "hands" if needed then toss with slight arc. It would be cool to see a video montage of different throwing styles. To bad they dont allow cameras at the tables.
