Brand new to the forum - going to Vegas in January and looking for thoughts on this way to play. I like to hit and run - I set a goal and when I achieve, I walk away. Not looking for comps that causes losses to more than pay for rooms anyway.

Here it is:

I usually play conservative - one unit on pass, two units for point and place the six and eight for one or two units.

Assuming I am at a $5 table and the point is 5, would it be good strategy to place the 6 & 8 for $12 and make a $5 Field bet per roll. This would give me a win on every roll except a 7 and net out $9 on every 6 & 8.

Thoughts?

That's kind of like saying, "Should I bet on every number from 1 to 34 in roulette? That will give me a win on every number except 35, 36, 0, and 00."

Notice that you will lose $29 when a 7 is rolled.

Question: if a 6 or 8 is rolled, do you immediately place that number again?

You are better off taking the money bet on the 6/8 and taking odds on the point with it.

It is not like saying that at all as far as I see it. To cover every number in your scenario, it would cost 34 units. In mine, it is one additional unit. I play the pass with double odds one unit, 2 units placed with 6 & 8 as my normal bet. My question is when 5 is the point, is it worth it for one more unit to make a Field bet.

If I do not make the Field bet and a 7 is rolled, my loss is $39 = $5 pass + $10 odds + $12 six and $12 eight = $39. If I add a $5 Field bet, I get all the other numbers PLUS better payout on 2 & 12 or on a loss I lose $44. Is that additional $5 worth it?

And I do replace the place bet if hit. In the $5 = the unit scenario, I am netting out $9 when 5 or 8 hits.

If you google "iron cross craps" you will find a whole lot of information! Good Luck!

No, the additional $5 on the field is not worth it, as you are exposing that $5 to the 3% or so house advantage on the field bet.

If you really must bet that $5, bump up the odds bet on your point.

Thank you DeMango, I know the Iron Cross suck as a whole. I was wondering by limiting it to when the point is 5, do the odds get better because the 5 is not a place bet.

Do not get confused between the FINANCIAL return on that Field Bet and the EMOTIONAL return on it.

If you like the concept of win on any roll but Seven, fine. Enjoy it. Its your time, its your money, its your choice and who knows, the shooter may actually make his point.

Neophytes are always told by the crew to bet the Field. Experienced players usually don't take the bait, but heck, even Big Red at over sixteen percent house edge can be a winner. So if you get enough emotional return on that Field bet to make it worth it to you, go for it. Just remember the difference between the emotional return and the financial return; then make YOUR decision.

what exactly is your goal?
How much do you play with each session? just to ask...

Thoughts?

sure.
the more you bet away from any true odds bet at craps
the less chance one has to hit a win goal target.
(this has been shown many times)

Always?
are you sure!
and where is this done exactly?

I say they are told most times
by the crew to
always
bet the pass line,
always
take some odds
and
always
place the 6 and the 8.
Oh, always tip your Dealers too.

well, not always (imo)

Thanks Sally.

My "short term goal" when I start is to win enough to pay for my vacation. I usually take care of that with some poker luckily.

So I start with a buy in of about $300 and play conservative. So pass line, 2x odds and place the six and eight. When I roll I usually add a $1 yo.

This time I think that when I have a point of 5, adding the Field bet for one unit and two unit place bets with the 6 and 8.

If I get up about $100, I walk away. If I have a good run, pocket the $100 and play the hot table.

How does that sound?

Thanks cowboy. I have been practicing on wizard two ways in prep for my trip. One unit with two times odds on the pass. Two units place on 6 & 8. Each win there add to pass odds one unit til maxed. And when point is 5, add one unit field. I find that more often than not, I can be plus $100 before-$300. When I hot +$100. I pocket and reset. My other version has adding a field when the point is 5,6 or 8. Less successful there.

With discipline, I like this way.
