No Win on Double Five - Why?

Just learning craps and practicing on the Wizard of Odds site:


I had double-five covered, it came up, yet I was not paid. Why is that? I saw it happen before, (on this free game), but I thought I must've been mistaken. Now that it's happened again, I know I'm not seeing things.
So, my question is, how can you have double-five covered, it comes up, yet you do not get paid?
I've also seen where I had another double covered, seven came up, yet my bet stayed.
I don't understand how the rules work for these bets. I know they are different from the proposition bets, which are one shot only. I thought these bets rode until either seven, or the number, (i.e., in the case of double-five, any ten except double-five), came up. But sometimes, it seems that six and four will come up, or even seven, yet my double-five bet stays. Or the double comes up and I don't get paid. What gives?

That craps game on the Wizard Of Odds site automatically switches off all hardway bets on the come-out roll. So, the hardway bets (2-2, 3-3, 4-4 and 5-5) will not win nor lose during the come-out roll, with this particular web craps game.

In a real casino, hardway bets work during come-out rolls, unless the player calls them off. Most craps players call off their hardway bets during the come-out (if they are paying attention), and I suppose that trend is the reason why this web craps game defaults to non-working hardways during come-outs.

in atlantic city, hardways are off on the come out,
think of it as a virtual AC game.

That rule is not unique to Atlantic City.

I've played in AC, CT, PA, Vegas and cruises.

The only place I experienced it where the hardways work on a come out is in Vegas. In fact, often the Vegas dealers will remind players that the hardways are working, giving them a chance to turn them off.

This begs the questions:

Why the difference?

Where, besides Vegas, do the hardways work unless turned off?

So, in a casino, (some casino's, anyway), if you call them off, they stay there until the come-out roll is established, then are active again?

Why would you want to call them off? Isn't your bet just as likely to come up as it was before? What is the thinking behind calling them off during the come-out?

Usually (at least in Vegas).

You might want to call off a hardway during the come-out roll if you have a pass line bet. A seven on the come-out roll is a win for the pass line, but it loses the hardway bets. So, the thinking is that one is betting against oneself, by having both bets working on the come-out roll.

I have no idea why (perhaps to earn their house edge more often) but some casinos in the UK have hardways working - so it's worth checking. btw our hardways are more generous (e.g. 19-2 for hard 6) so they do get played.

For the record, I hardly ever play the hard ways, but when I do, I go with the house rules, primarily because it's easier than remembering to make the call each time.

But, even though gambling in the US started in Nevada, I'd still like to know why they came up with that rule in the first place. After all, since on a come out roll, most people are rooting for a 7, wouldn't it make sense to have them off automatically?
