Worst Play I've ever witnessed.

Hanging at a Vegas casino, playing some Video BJ for drinks and have conversation with an AP from here. Player is talking to a working girl ,showing her how to play and he hits a four card soft 21.
Everyone makes an occasional mistake.

I dealt blackjack to a guy years ago, when most of you were in diapers. He doubled down on his blackjack against my (dealer) 10. He got some crap card like a 4 or 5. He ended up winning.

You can't be that old. 80% of the people here are over 50, which would make you 75-80 and wearing diapers now.

Well yeah, that's my point. People who are over 50 y/o wear diapers, probably.

I didn't think most people here were 50+. A poll could be interesting.

Well, I dunno if these are "the worst" plays, but they were certainly the worst for my bankroll. Both by the same guy, second is easily the worst.

At a full table, this one guy has been making some poor calls all night. It's odd, because he plays by basic strategy most of the time but will make downright terrible calls other times. He hit on 14 against a dealer 5 early on, which concerned me. But otherwise seemed okay... a couple of hits on 16 against 10 a a no surrender table. But then he stood on hard 13 against a dealer ACE because he "felt like he had a good card coming" and "thought the dealer didn't have shit under there". So naturally, he busts with a 10 and the dealer four-draws to 21. Of course I had 20 on that hand.

While that was terrible, this next hand was the worst for me because I had a great hand going. Got dealt two 8s against dealer 6. Math might be slightly askew, but I had worked my way back up to $50 down total for the trip (was $200 down before I sat... I'm a low-limit player--usually put $100 down initially and work with that but have a back bankroll of $300). I was almost ready to leave and was feeling ballsy so I put $50 of my (at that time) $250 stack on the hand. Split the 8s, of course. $100 on the table. Get dealt a three, double, get 19. $150 on the table. My second hand gets dealt a 2... double on that 10 for an 18. $200 on the table. I stay against the 6, of course. Now, the aforementioned guy at the table... he was dealt 15. Easy stay, right? Wrong. He looks up and goes "I gotta hit, what if the dealer's got a 10 under there?". We all caution him against this very strongly (myself especially). As before, he pulls a 10, busts, and dealer pulls 21 with like 6 cards. Would have been an easy bust if he had stayed. Eight shoes worth of grinding gone in one hand. Three or four hands later, I was bankrupt.

I keep my gambling money separate from my day-to-day funds (I've been playing on "casino money" since a big day at the BJ tables 2 years ago), so it doesn't bother me all that much. But man, that was frustrating as hell.

If he stood on 13 how did he draw the 10? Also, 13 should hit against an ace, so if he drew a 10 to bust (that would have been the dealers) he still did the right thing.

Next, what ANYONE ELSE DOES at a blackjack table has NO EFFECT ON YOUR BANKROLL over the long run. Any "ploppy" is just as likely to help you as hurt you on any 1 given hand. Say he had 13 and dealer had 6 up... and he hit... do you know the next card? What if he draws a 5 and the dealer had 16? Other players do not have any effect on your bankroll in the long run.

This is a great example. So did you know the 10 came before the 5? Next, sounds like the dealer would have made a hand with the 10 and his "smaller" under card. All the same, had the next 2 cards been reversed in the shoe, he would have been the hero, but we always remember our bad beats, and not when the ploppies save us. Again they have NO EFFECT on your bankroll in the long run.

There are other players at the table? Honestly, I tend to zone out unless I'm playing with someone who likes to double for less. Then I pay attention and try to fill in the difference.

My bad on the first example, I was conflating a few different occasions and didn't realize I forgot to edit out that last part before I posted. He stood on 13 against an Ace based on "a feeling" was my point haha.

As for the second example, it was actually quite a unfortunate draw by the dealer. I don't recall the exact combination but I want to say it was something like 6-8-A-A-5? Dealer definitely would have busted with that 10 as his third card. Security guard was dropping off new chips and watched the hand, saw how much I had down, and gasped when the dealer hit 21 haha.

You have a good point, though, I didn't really look at it like that. There was a hand or two where his mis-play actually helped me or the table. But it's the really egregious mis-plays like that last one that completely bankrupt me at the time that stick with you haha. I still have a good time playing, of course, but I've always been most successful and had the best time when the whole table plays basic strategy to a tee (minus a few educated guesses, like making a decision based on the assumption that there's a high card coming if there's only low cards on the table).

Hahaha okay fair point -- it does make me feel a bit better to say I'm playing with their money though :D

On a somewhat unrelated note, I've mostly lurked since I joined this forum but your posts are always really informative so I want to thank you for that! I don't think I have the acumen to count cards, nor the bankroll or stomach for swings to AP, but reading your posts has taught me a lot about blackjack and AP in general!

You got a pair of 8s and split them , and double down on both. Then you say you stayed vs the dealer 6???

What other choice do you have after doubling? You have to stay

There could be more confusion involved and it was actually a Super Fun 21 table that allows surrender after doubling...

Also, the other day I help 2 pair instead of a made full house because I was playing too fast.

Not so much a bad play as a dumb comment. I was playing uth when a guy raised 4x with pocket aces and lost. Obviously the right play with bad results. He looks at me and says "I usually don't raise with aces because they literally have no value before the flop."

Dealing Heads Up Holdem yesterday evening, I had a player try to throw away his flush just because he didn't want to rebuy to place a play bet.

That's even worse than trying to do the same thing on UTH because in HUH, the blind is a guaranteed payoff.

I know that this is technically not the right answer, but a guy said he was playing a table game that other players could help you win or help you lose and one of the player's said something like,"Win, or I lose my mortgage! Do you really want me to be homeless!? The guy said he was shocked that someone was betting their mortgage and luckily for everyone the Dealer lost and everyone won. So in a nutshell, any game where someone risk losing their home is a worst play.

Other than betting on somebody else's hand, and assuming that the speaker wasn't mistaken, what could that possibly be? Only thing that comes to mind (and doesn't fit all the requirements) is that solo multi-hand single deck BJ machine where all hands in play win if they run out of cards before resolving the hand.

Coincidentally after reading several pages of this thread today I sat next to the ploppy king today at a $5 6D table. The ONLY hand he would split was tens, and the first time he did was against an ace. You know the drill, gets an ace and a ten for a 20/21 while my 15 finds a bust card and ploppy wins.

I used to be worried that my local casino would switch from 3:2 to 6:5, but every time I go I am reminded how much they must rake in on any given Sunday.

Worst play thst I have seen and it was me. Swing by casino to pick up my 75 free play. I only have maybe 10 on me. I ran the free play and had about $60 left. Before leaving I check the ux for s&g in the high limit room. As I walk in a guy is standing up and I see a 10x left.I get closer and realize it is a $5 5 play. F me, I only have 60 on me. What to do, run to atm and risk another swoop in which was likely or just play the $60. I played 5 hands at 2 credit. I was dealt a high pair and one of them improved to 3oak but not the 10x. Owell decent hit but left a bunch on the table.

I saw one on Saturday night I couldn’t believe. Playing six-deck blackjack … the guy to my left gets Q7 for an obvious 17. Dealer upcard is an 8. After I play my hand (don’t remember what I had), this guy DOUBLES his hard 17 and hits a 3 for 20. Even the ploppies were stunned at this move. The dealer didn’t blink, kept going, and ultimately wound up with a 10 down card for an 18.

Was just at Caesars for St. Patty's day and a Jamaican fella sat at the table with $300 in green chips about 3 hands in. Didn't think much of it at first and suddenly the dealer started pulling 20's like they were going out of style. 10 showing, 10 in the hole. 9 showing, Ace in the hole. 4 showing, 6 underneath and a 10 right on top, etc.

Sure enough the dealer's next up card is an Ace and everyone groans... No blackjack ... to our surprise and everyone has 18 or better so the dealer goes to turn over his hole card, when suddenly the Jamaican chap says "Wait!" and starts reaching in his pocket for more money. The dealer says "I already checked, there's no blackjack." The guy says, "No, I wanna double!" The dealer replies, "You have 19." He retorts "I know, how much do I got up there." Dealer says "$125"

He shells out the money to cover the ill advised double down and to everyone's shock he pulls an ACE!!! He starts celebrating and acting like he made the greatest move in Blackjack history. Then the dealer turns up a 6 and pulls... a 4!!!

Everyone goes quiet and the dope starts to say "Push" knowing full well that he lost, but the dealer says "Sorry my 21, beats your 20" and takes everyone's money.

Needless to say I stopped playing at that table as did most of the others.

Saw some idiot hit a soft 18 against a 4 the other day. Took the dealers bust card (8) and then the dealer of course pulls 20 and took my money. Impossible to win at blakcjack with so many idiots everywhere. Sometimes I think they are casino employees.

Haha, this is a good one. This made me laugh pretty good, some people are that stupid. Smh.

I love it when ploppies talk about a ploppie effecting the Sacred Flow Of The Cards.
The difference between fiction and reality is that fiction is supposed to make sense.

If he had said, I won't hit this if you give me $2, what would you have done?
I am a robot.

Do you remember the dealers name and what he/she looks like?

That's actually an interesting tactic. A less confrontational option, if the complaining player has an advantage (based on their dealt hand and the dealer's upcard) might be to say "I'll bet you $X that you will still win this hand even after my dumb move". If he takes you up on it, the bet will offset $X of his losses is he loses, and if he wins he won't mind paying off the bet.

Just the other night I saw this guy double a 5 (!!!!!!!!) v. dealer 7. I'm thinking, "WTF??" He received a 3 or 4, dealer turns over a 10 and scoops up his chips.
