I visited a casino recently that dealt 3-deck BJ out of a shoe. Everything looked fine, but just seems like an odd number of decks to use. Anything really different in strategy compared to double deck?

They do this to thwart card counters.

It's impossible for a card counter to play since there's no published basic strategy for 3 deck bj.

It's not impossible. I play DD and forget I'm supposed to split 66 v. 7 and 77 v. 8, or double A3 v. 4--since I usually play 6D. Those splits are rare, and sucky, defensive high variance splits anyway--and A3 has a low index in 6D, where you will double when the count is favorable. Forgetting those plays in DD raises the house edge by a couple hundredths of a percent, while decreasing variance. I'd just play 3 deck the same as multi-deck.

I think you just use "multi-deck" strategy, as you would on 4+ decks.
May the cards fall in your favor.

I have been waiting for some honest answers before posting my thoughts:

Yes, it is definitely an odd number of decks. It is also a prime number of decks.

Gee, I hope not. (source: Jose Jimenez, aka Bill Dana circa 1960)
If the House lost every hand, they wouldn't deal the game.

That would have been more confusing, cuz then I would have thought it was supposed to be humorous.

I've calculated 3-deck basic strategy; IIRC, it's the same as 4-8.
