It is understandable that casino personnel do not have a high opinion of (most) casino patrons.

Would you respect people who trusted in "hope" in their unending attempts to try to win at games where the house has the edge on (pretty much) every bet?

That would be like expecting workers at a methadone clinic to respect their junky clients.

It is just a game to the workers, really, where they find joy through schadenfreude.

Apt.

People who work at a methadone clinic are probably skimming some pills for use and some for sale, just as many dealers get off duty and then either shoot craps or play poker.

Casinos in Vegas generally treat people well, but Indian casinos are a law unto themselves.

I am not sure about that if we are talking about dealers.

I read somewhere that the Eye spends about as much time watching employees as it does patrons.

When your job forces you to keep your hands in the cookie jar, it is tough to resist temptation.

I have had good experiences in both Las Vegas and Pac NW tribal casinos.

In fact, some of the tribal casinos (Spirit Mtn., Snoqualmie, Tulalip to name a few) are comparable to some mid level Las Vegas casinos, without the sports book, the lines of credit, and the free drinks.

Can it be called a casino if it doesn't offer free drinks?

That is odd, because usually those are the most experienced dealers although they are under pressure to keep Hands Per Hour up. Things can be slower at local casinos and ever more slow at "break-in" houses.

It does take a toll on dealers to stand much of the day, get shifted around all the time, be under constant surveillance even in the break room and employee dining room, be constantly rotated to prevent collusion with a player and constantly smile at drunks and shot takers.

Not really but the Indians do reap great benefits from taxpayer funded projects, Indians can not only have casinos they can have full commercial fishing rights not just subsistence fishing, many Indians have small reservations but very much larger environmental control areas that the treaties give them, so they have control over hunting, fishing, logging, road development and construction that is off their reservation. The Indians are said to have elected the Attorney General who later became Governor and that is perhaps why the state came down so hard on websites and online betting.

Otherwise its a nice lush green state with beautiful scenery.

I was down $1400 the other day. Huge for me. After getting half of it back, I hit a monster shoe. In hindsight, there were two hands left in the shoe. I asked the dealer how many hands were left. "I don't know" was the response. He didn't even look. He was PO'ed that I had just won $600 off him in 5 minutes. Thanks for the guilt-free excuse not to tip.

Why would a dealer be upset that you won? Winning players tip a lot more than losing players, on average.

How would I know? I'm not a mind reader. Maybe he wasn't irritated I won, but mad because the voices compelled him for no reason. I've seen a dealer get extremely, unmistakably upset when I couldn't lose a hand, next came the heat.

I actually run into this more than you would think. Let's say I buy in for $1k and wind up down to say $200, betting $100 per hand. If I win 3 or 4 hands in a row, I'll notice a change in temperament if I don't wind up tipping during that stretch. I try not to hold it against them since I understand it's human nature BUT if it's the same dealer who dealt me down to $200 and they get particularly cold, I will hold back on tipping. If I thought they were upset because they feel someone should tip based on time regardless of results (which is the way I feel), I would let it slide. But I think it's much more likely they see my "winnings" as a spoil of riches that I should share.

The one who had a meltdown? Yes, at that place like a $1/shoe all day... The one just recently, no I was down a lot, and he dealt to me for 15 minutes. This is getting a bit tangential. They wanted me to lose. There is no superseding cause to their madness. Are you suggesting tipping more will reduce heat and it is worth the cost?

I think that tipping the dealers will make them like you more. I have no idea if that will reduce heat or not.

But, my point is, I don't think that the dealer was mad because you were winning; I think that the dealer was mad because you were winning and not tipping.

I don't think so. I've tipped to dealers that looked pretty mad and all they did was grab the tip, look at it, and throw it in their tip jar. Why would I tip someone who won't even acknowledge my tip?

He'd have to be pretty dumb then...I could be down a grand in two minutes, and he's mad I didn't pause to celebrate and pay him for dealing out random cards...then he displays a poor attitude to preclude any tip I may offer at the end of the shoe or when I get color? You could be correct, but if so he has little rationality in his actions, is terrible at his job, and deserves nothing. Jealousy of others' good fortune, or their ability to create it in the case of APs, at least that is excused by human nature.

I'm not saying that he is following optimal strategy here. I think he should always be nice to everyone no matter what to maximize his income.

But you're not winning the dealer's money. Even a stupid / short-sighted dealer shouldn't care if you win the casino's money.

And more importantly, why would a person not express some professional courtesy for receiving a tip? Even if it's small, they add up. That dealer needed to go somewhere and give it a damn rest. Even if I'm dead tired and can't think straight, I still thank players for tips.

Plenty of people win and don't tip. Don't take it out on those who do.

That said, there was one instance of a player who tipped who didn't really deserve it that I heard about on my table; thankfully I was on break at the time. Some colossal douchenozzle was on our craps table, refusing to get off his phone, stroking us, and then finally he was so belligerent that security threw him out. On the way out, he tossed two white chips at a base dealer and told him to "get a haircut, you (bleeping) (rhymes with "maggot.")" That man is alive because someone with restraint was on stick.

I once had a blackjack dealer tell me about his winning strategy that he was going to try next time he went to a casino. He was going to always hit until he got hard 17, regardless of what the dealer was showing. That way, the dealer would not have a strategic advantage. Genius.

Well, the dealer is used to being the last to play. So in his viewpoint it does seem like a bright idea to mimic the house.

Well trained dealers never reject a tip of any size .... one guy tipping fifty cents will start a trend at the table of players tipping far more than that.
