Anyone have any funny or interesting stories? :)

It seems its always the very bad, non Basic Strategy players who have the most to say. Ex. The people in other seats staying on their 12-14s etc. against a dealers 10 didn't get a word said to them, but the guy on 3rd base hitting his A7 gets criticized if the dealer makes a hand because of it. Always the player on 3rd bases fault, lol.

It`s even worse when you play at casinos that don`t take a hole card.
so if you have 15 and dealer shows a ten if you hit and get a small card, that card would have gone to the dealer,so for that reason many people will stay on 14,15,16 against ten.Of course when you hit and get a ten they say nothing.

I always get criticized for doubling A-8 against a 6 in H17 games, regardless of where I'm sitting.

Which brings up an interesting story from today. I've won my last two A-8 v. 6 doubles. The second one occurred today. I was playing center field; double down card was a TWO! I got up, strutted around, and said "It doesn't get any better than that, baby!"

Too much? I figure I'm entitled to gloat after all the grief I've gotten over the years.

I also saw a guy get a 4 on hard seventeen a few minutes later. Something you'll almost never see, and for good reason.

I'll tell you guys what I like to do sometimes if someone is being a real jerk.

I always like to remember a misplay that a player makes from some number of hands ago, according to BS, and then throw it in his face if he doesn't like my play at third base. I shocked one guy so much that he didn't even know how to reply to me!

He says: "You know, buddy, if you knew that you should always stand on 14 (wrong!) then maybe you wouldn't have pulled that ten away from the dealer and we both would have had a win on that hand."

I reply: "I apologize, I'm not the world's best Blackjack player. The one thing that I did notice, though, is that if you would have Split those deuces against a dealer's five the way you are supposed to eleven hands ago you would have ended up with eleven and ten and would have hit for a ten on each and won both of the hands instead of being forced to stand on fourteen. Furthermore, the distribution of the cards would have changed, according to everyone playing Basic Strategy, such that the Table would have accounted for three more Naturals, I would have personally won three more hands than I have, you would have won four more hands than you have, in fact, you would only have lost three hands since then. Furthermore, this kind gentleman in between us as he would have won two more hands than he has, including a Natural."

***I was obviously talking completely out of my tuchus, except I was correct about the misplay and how many hands prior to that it was. That's really all I needed to know for my argument to be completely unassailable against this guy. He didn't bug me about anything the rest of the night!

Don't play BJ anymore but when I did, just as I would sit down at 3rd base (I always chose 3rd base so I could see as many cards as possble before decision) I would warn other players at the table that I did not always follow basic strategy. Seemed to work. I think most players just don't want a NOVICE sitting there although why I don't know??

I never would hit 13-16 with a ten up for dealer. In disgust I would surrender about half the time with 13-16 against a ten.

I should stay quiet when other players complain about me, but I've used your strategy in the past. I had some fun at the expense of one of my critics with, "Ha ha! You doubled on hard 12!!! Ha ha!"

It is very tempting to put someone in their place like this. I used to do it frequently. As a player who supports myself from blackjack, play my top priority is longevity and flying under the radar, and that means not bringing attention to myself in any way. Any type of comment that says 'hey I know a little something about this game is counter-productive. In actuality, even if you are not an advantage player and just a basic strategy player, you want them to thing you know little or nothing about this game. Do you know when it comes to getting rated, there are different levels based on your play. 'Bad players' get rated higher and will receive better and more comps. A basic strategy player playing the same amount will be rated lower and receive less. And if you are determined to be an advantage player you will receive even less and eventually may stop receiving any comps for your play. Often this is the first step before a backoff or barring.

So back to the original situation. I now just smile and say your probably right. "I shouldn't have hit my 13 vs the dealer 10 because I took a ten that with his 5 in the hole would have made him bust"....(smile)..yes you are probably right. Bonus benefit is I think this actually disturbs them more than if you HAD gotten into a discussion with them. Afterall, that's what they wanted. :)

Beautiful. My last A-8 double the dealer mutters "you like playing with fire eh?" while the rest of the table sucks their teeth and shakes their heads. I got an Ace and won the hand. I didn't strut I just said "GET LIKE ME!"

I was watching a table, waiting for a seat, when 3rd base opens up. The pit and the young female dealer ask me if I want to sit down. I warily scan the players, and say "I'll play so long as no one yells at me for playing properly". The dealer starts to chuckle, and as I sit down I mumble to myself (and the dealer) "You study that stupid card for a few minutes, and all you get is yelled at". The dealer actually burst out laughing.

I think the dealers see the worst of it and feel our pain...

I always play perfect basic strategy.

I used to defend myself against the average idiot that would criticize my perfect play.

Now, I say nothing.

Yesterday I was criticized for hitting a soft 17!!!!!

The guy said "Dude, you just took a good hand and turned it into a bad one." (after I pulled a 7).

Hilarious!

I've noticed many people think the amount of their bet correlates to their knowledge of the game.

I've heard comments like "Your only betting $25, and I play $100 per hand....trust me, I KNOW the game."

I don't play that often, but only been criticized once. One other player at the table, he gets deal two aces, I have a 12, and dealer has a 2 showing. He splits the aces, getting one card on each. I hit the 12, drawing a 10 to bust. Dealer has 12, hits a 9 for 21, and wipes out the other player.

When I hit the 12, he went crazy yelling. Dealer said to the guy, "he [me] is playing correct strategy." Guy responds with, "he's not supposed to hit when someone else has a split hand." Not really sure where he came up with that one. Anyway, I proceeded to tell him that I would make any action that he wanted for $5. I'm playing for $10 a hand, he's playing for $50. Surprisingly, he agreed!

The rest of the evening, he proceeded to throw me $5 every time he wanted me to make a certain action. I'd say about 80% of the time, this was the action I would have performed anyway, ie, basic strategy.

It was an Indian casino here in Phoenix. And believe me, every time I go, I look for him! But, I've never seen him again. With the way he played, I'm not too surprised.

On playing third base, I say, "I play my hand as I see fit, as do you."

When dealing blackjack, if the third base guy gets flak, I chime in, "the man is allowed to play his hand as he sees fit, the same right as anyone else here."

Had to deal with one of these morons yesterday. The dealer was dealing super fast so I was a bit behind on my counting, and trying to quickly count before the cards were shuffled away. I had declined to double my 13 against a dealer 3 with a true count of 1, and the player beside me with a know-it-all tone starts to explain "you know the book says that you should technically double" I try to ignore him so I could go back to counting but he persisted- finally I responded with a quick "not my book" and he got the hint that his insights were not wanted. Extra irritating b/c not only did I almost lose the count due to this a-hole but he had no clue what he was talking about.

Was at a table with a player who on the majority of hands felt compelled to let others know if their play was correct (in his mind, lol) or not, and kept saying we need to play as a team, lol. As luck/variance would have it, he was the only player who was losing out of the four of us at the table. After losing his last chips he stands up and angrily says that he wouldn't of just lost $700 if we all would play correctly! Third base player says, "So you would be happier if you were winning and the rest of us were losing"? Losing player thinks for a second an then says "of course". Third base then says, "So much for being a TEAM player. Then adds, "Look at it this way, sometimes you're the bug and sometimes you're the windshield".

I like that line. lol

I understand why it could be thought of as "Third Base" since that's the last place the cards are dealt to but from any perspective, if you overlay a miniature baseball field on a blackjack table, that position is at First Base.

I'm just sayin'.

It's referred to from the player's perspective not the dealer's but I don't know how they get center field.

Even from the player's perspective, it's still first base, it's the cards that are running around the bases backward.

If somebody ever complained about my play, I would look at them
and say "I don't care." If they continued to talk about it, I would
say "Seriously, I don't care." This always seemed to work. Maybe
its because I really didn't care. I never tell anybody how to play

I have had critics at the table a few times, I usually ignore it, but if they persist, I still usually will ignore because I know their bad play and lack of BR will not let them play very long. I usually get positive compliments for my play and many players will ask for advice at the table, I begin w/ it's your money - you have earned the right to make your own decision by placing a bet in the circle, then they usually counter w/ , well what would you do ? I then tell them the correct BS play, 99.9 % are very gracious !! I also will double and split w/ other players that either don't know the play or don't have enough $$$, I love to do this when someone is steaming and has good sized bet out !!:)

But I seem to make comments to others, when they do not play BS and I lose a big bet , I know it helps as much as it hurts, but I can't seem to help myself when I have been waiting and waiting for a chance to put a decent bet out !! :\.

So I guess that makes me as bad as the players that make comments on perfect BS- so I have NO room to talk !!

Like all the other stories in this thread, I have taken my fair share of grief for what appears to be the "wrong play" but is in reality the correct play. After catching some flak for what seemed like the 200th time that night ( I seemed to be getting more than my share of odd hands, 4-4 v 6 s17v5, and so on) I just look at the guy and flatly said" tell ya what, reach in your pocket pull out 300$ slid it to me, and I will play every single hand the exact way you want me to. No action? then shut up and play cards."

In the same spirit, when someone say something about "messing up the cards", I ask them to tell me next time a black jack is comming, since I have alot of chips and would like to bet all of it, when it comes. Oh, you dont know? the shut up and play.

I used to hear it a lot when I played, then I quit drinking. Going on 20 years now and it's rare that I hear a complaint about my play! But then, I refuse to play at third base too. And actually, I prefer first base in every card game I play. And unless I particularly like the dealer I'll go play poker if I can't sit at first base.
I guess that could be considered weird. Might even be worthy of another thread.

This just happened this morning. I was playing blackjack heads up in a fairly neutral shoe and was slightly ahead. A hot shot kid jumped in and played from one to three hands without winning any of them.

His next strategy was to criticize my play. That didn't work and when he lost a large double down as the dealer had an ace under a 6 it dawned on him. He didn't realize it was a S17 game. He then went to great lengths to explain that he only plays H17 games. His reason was that the dealer takes more cards and that is better for the player.

He stayed until the end of the shoe and ate cards for me after I had wonged out. I never got the chance to thank him as he stormed off in a huff.

I have an extremely high tolerance for awkwardness, which probably explains why I really don't care what other people say to me at the blackjack table and pretty much ignore any criticism or just wave it off with a one-liner like "well I play it by the book" or "you play your hand the way you want, and I'll do the same."

Soft doubles seem to always get the most criticism. Last night a doubled a soft 18 against a 2 or 3 (don't remember, but it was a H17 game so either was the right decision). The dealer almost plowed right by me without me giving a sign, but thankfully saw the extra chip and doubled it. I got a face card, dealer busted. The dealer and other folks at the table didn't actually verbally tear me down, but they were all giving me funny stares.

" The dealer almost plowed right by me " I have been known to hit a hard 17 or 18 against a 6 with one of those super fast dealers.

Pit boss usually gets involved as the dealer has given somebody my hit card.

As long as it is my money, I prefer to play the hand myself. LOL
