Hi MC,
I neither know, nor care who Steve Moore is. OK. Sorry. I did follow your link.

But I find the existence of this thread quite enigmatic. Is it a metaphor for some recent event where you discovered...

Is this the start of some sort of cautionary tale or has it a moral? My question is, I guess not about what you posted, but why? Forgive me if I over analyse.

Has somebody proved fallible? (We all are)

Please help this ignorant Limey to understand this thread's raison d'etre.

I look forward to reading your ongoing trip reports, which seem to have dried up a little

Thanks, if you humour me with a reply. None required, I'm just curious.

WHOOSH.... As heatmap's comment goes straight over my head. Care to explain in words of one syllable?
I know of Fry, but prefer the character Bender.

Not sure if...?

to tip if you win.

I do it via side bets alongside my own.

I'd just say, "Remember to tip," why is whether or not one wins relevant? Did the dealer not do roughly the same amount of work either way?

I don't start tipping until I am either ahead, or a win is imminent such as when coming back from in the hole. Also, keep in mind as I stated that I almost never just hand the dealers anything - I place it alongside my own bets. So unless I win that hand, they don't win.

I've tipped out as much as $10,000. in one session via these side bets, so I don't think any dealers are being deprived by my tipping methods.

I wasn't accusing you of shorting the dealers. My position is simply that tips should be based on work output and quality of the service rendered; to wit, it's not the dealer's fault if you fail to win.

That said, it's your money; tip as you like.

In general, on the very few occasions when I have asked a dealer whether he wants a chip handed to him, or placed alongside mine, the dealer has always said that would prefer to have it ride with my bet. That way, too, the dealer has a chance to get double.

Now, I suppose if dealing with some extremely unlucky ____ then maybe a dealer would say, Uhhhh, just hand it to me.

To start the tipping process I typically break down a black chip, fifty fifty half red half green, and start with a single red chip alongside mine. If the hand is won, the dealer wins $10. As my bets and winning progress, I'll move up to more red chips, green and even black alongside my bets.

One time, with this alcoholic red faced looking dealer, I tossed over a black chip and said "Fifty fifty" and he just said, "Oh, thank you very much," pocketed two greens into the toke box and handed me two. I just let it go, but joked about it for the rest of the day with the other dealers, who all know what I mean when I say that. They laughed too because they know that particular dealer is a bit out of it and generally hungover at work each day.

In poker, it is customary to tip the dealer after winning a sizable pot. I have never ever seen a poker player tip the dealer after losing the pot. "Tipping for work" may be your moral precept, but the sense of the gambling public is that there is no moral reason to do so. "Let the winners tip."

In table games, the superstitious take is that tipping when winning gives the dealer a stake in having you win. Of course, that should not change the outcome, but it often does change the vibe of the table - simplistically, a dealer is incentivised to be glad when you win and chagrined when you lose. When a table has different people rooting for different things, then it is akin, in my mind, to an orchestra of hearts that is warming up -all sorts of instruments playing dischordant notes. However, when everyone at the table has the same emotions, it is like an orchestra of hearts all playing the same melody. So, having the dealer's emotions be at least slightly in sync with your own makes the experience more pleasant. So: no tipping when you lose, tip when you win.

Finally, a player who has just lost their bankroll is not well-positioned to tip.
So many better men, a few of them friends, are dead. And a thousand thousand slimy things live on, and so do I.

A head of security I definitely believe, I doubt most security guards in casinos are ex law enforcement. I just think the casino pay is probably too low for most.
