A person from South Carolina has come forward to claim the record prize. The winner elected to take a one time payment of 878,000,000. They wish to remain anonymous

I would bet they fail. Too many people will have access to the information. Lawyers (and their staffs). Bankers (and their staffs). Brokers (and their staffs). Relatives. Friends. Lottery officials. IRS employees. Etc.

Hopefully the delay was intentional so that winner could get all his ducks in a row. You need to get an attorney to draft a blind trust, move, change your name, etc. Not doing that is a recipe for disaster because every scammer and relative you never knew you had will come to you with their hands out.

Nothing stops Congress from passing a bill, and the President then signing it into law, changing the tax code to tax all multistate lottery wins in the past 10 years over $100 million to an additional 90% tax. It just has to be broad enough so that the Supreme Court won't consider it singling out one person and declared a bill of attainder.

The winner seems smart and wise. Keeping his secret for so long AND coming forward in complete anonymity. Kudos to him! On a side note,he has to be a USA record for one of the longest hold outs, since he waited 5 months to claim his prize. :)

I'd anonymously hire a person to collect it for me. Give him ten million for his troubles. Funnel it through a couple newly set up holding companies and no one will know you are worth five hundred million.

How do the people that are known to have tons of cash avoid all the pitfalls of people asking for money, solicitation and all the other BS? I would probably go that route before I gave away Millions and have somome else collect, unless it was somome I wanted to give the money to anyways.

As far as unwanted family or friends coming out of the woodwork asking for money. Perhaps you could have a contract drawn up for yourself saying you can only give away x amount of money or xy and z would happen. Now when someone asks for money you can play that card and it would be true. All the people I wanted to give money to wouldn't have to ask.

I can only think of a few things I really want that I can't have now. There is not too many places I really want to go see. I'm never buying a $200 pair of jeans to wear.

If I suddenly had 10x more money than I could ever spend, one of the best parts would be helping out my family.

I'd probably just let everyone know that it was a one-time thing. Pay off all morgages and college. Give everyone a chunk of change and then that would be that.

My family is pretty stable though. No drug addicts or gambling addicts or whatever, afaik. My cousins and I are all over the hill, so it would mainly be about setting up the next generation.

I think it would be pretty easy to fend off others. When you have basically infinite money how do you get scammed? I'd have no interest in any kind of risky investments or schemes. The money would all be locked up somewhere.

I know I’ve written this before, but I have decided to no longer play these massive jackpots. I would only buy one ticket for fun, but still. I think they would cause me more problems than they would solve.

The only time I’d play the lottery is if there is some rollover jackpot for 1-5 mil where the ev is pretty close to even.

He knows if he comes forward publicly, a lot of people will beg him for money, which is why he stayed quiet for so long. And still claimed anonymously. Wise man.

The anonymous Winner must have seen the cautionary tale of the 20 year old who won $430 million in Powerball and came forward very quickly. Like the second day, on Facebook, someone begged him for Cancer money, saying something like,"Congratulations on your $430 million dollar blessed windfall. I am so happy for you. I have Cancer and Cancer Treatments are really taking a toll on my life. I hope you can find it in your heart to share the wealth you were blessed with and help me with my Cancer Treatments. God bless you!"

I don't really think that is legal. That's where the "lottery rules and regulations" come in. I also agree with others wondering how anyone can be anonymous having 1.5 billion. It's something which is certainly possible, but not easy to do. Depends on the sort of person one is I suppose, I don't know.

In Nevada you can do a name change in about two months. I would do that and then collect it if I could not stay anonymous. The only thing people around me would know is that I finally decided to retire and cash out my investments.

I think a smart idea would be to have a lawyer/Anonymous Trust Representative claim the ticket for you and have the agreement in writing so that if the person embezzles the money for themselves, you can sue and win. There is nothing stopping your buddy from stealing all of your money and running off with it.

Win $1.5 billion in the lottery and want to go as unnoticed as possible?

Just go buy a cheap yacht, get some old bottles of Crystal and refill them with cheap champagne, and some other stuff like that. Post up pics of yourself "living it up" on FaceUnion and other social media platforms. That's all just a front, of course.

Meanwhile, you're moving money into other stuff, buying up real estate, investing in the stock market, and other investments and hwatnot.

After about 6 months of "living it up", say you're broke and don't have none money. Now everyone thinks you're poor AF but you're really not.

Maybe pay off some fake news media people (WaPo, CNN, MSNPC, BuzzFeed [lulz], The Young Turds, Vox, etc.) to write about how you lost all your money.
