If you received a free $5 coupon to play slots, what would the ideal machine to play? Max lines on a lower denomination machine or max lines on a higher denomination machine?

One more caveat, you can only cash out actual winnings. So suppose you won $1 and wanted to cash it out right away, you would not get $6, but rather $1. And you'd be left with $5 in credit that still needs to roll on the machine.

I would say for five bucks your variance on a slot machine is so huge that it doesn't matter what you play. I would throw it into a megabucks machine and throw caution to the wind.

You absolutely want to play max credits if there's a bonus for the highest prize. Like, if the top symbol pays 1/3/5/10/100 with 1/2/3/4/and 5 coins in play, you very much want to play the 5 coins. I would play the most lines I could at the top coins/line. With $5, that'd maybe be 5 dimes per line on a 9 line machine? Or 5 nickels per line on a 20 line machine.

I'd use it on a DW VP machine with the best paytable I could find. If none are available (a reasonabel possibility), then it doesn't much matter. Boymimbo's suggestions is a good one in that case.

It depends on what your goal is. If you're goal is to get as much of the $5 as possible, then a low level VP machine is the way to go.

If you want to go for the big score - $1 slot sounds right.

The best way to get the maximum amount back out is to play a .25 video poker machine, with either the Jacks or Better or Bonus Poker game on it, and play one coin at a time until you've run all the credits through. Your expected loss will be about ten cents, and you will just about always recover most of the credits, or even book a profit.

one hand of Dueces and Joker Wild at the $1 denomination with 5 coins played.

youre slightly more than 50% to get a paying hand.

1 - .496232 according to the wizards table on a 99.07% payback machine.

Thanks for all the suggestions everyone. I think I'll try both extremes next time I head to the casino. .25c VP and $1 slots.

One caveat to be aware of... Some casinos will not allow free play to be used on full-pay video poker. When that's the case, I tend to play .25 two-line slots, and count how many times i have to hit the spin button. If I get up quite a bit, I'll play it to an even amount, otherwise, I just cash in the winnings.
