I question only the Fourth Step. Most people suggest eating meals as defined by your body's schedule. If you normally have scrambled eggs for breakfast, then that is what to have soon after you get up, no matter what the clock reads or how weird a look the waitress gives you.

Sleep in dark room... and transition from dark to light slowly so as to experience the dawning of the day no matter the actual hour is.

That confirms a problem I had.

About 30 years ago, I was a computer operator in the banking industry. The shift was rotating 12 hours, three days a week.

For 4 weeks, the shift was 6:00am to about 6:10pm, Mon-Wed. Then 4 weeks of 6:00am-6:10pm, Thu-Sat. Then 4 weeks of 6:00pm-6:10am, Mon/Tue to Wed/Thu. Then 4 weeks of 6:00pm-6:10am, Thu/Fri to Sat/Sun.

Working three day shifts with four off was bad enough - too much free time to spend the money. But then doing it at night really was bad.

The worst part was the rotation - getting home Sunday morning and having to adjust and be back Monday morning - it was impossible. Everyone was dragging their ass that day. I lasted there 9 months.

Rotating shifts are the worst. At least with straight nights you can have a social life, join a sports league, whatever. But rotating is a killer. I read about one factory had some kind of really weird rotation where you kept starting 1 hour earlier every week to accomadate production. Management wanted to make a 4/10 format with a set schedule. The young workers were all for it, seeing three day weekends. The old timers thought they were getting cheated the 2 hours of OT each day. Sheeese.

I am starting to prefer an "off" schedule in some ways. Hit the restaurants when they are not crowded, miss traffic........

Overall my entry into the gaming business has been a bit of a disappointment. It is not as fun as I thought it would be and my desire to play myself has decreased significantly since I am surrounded in an environment of big loss.

Great post Nick.

I think no business looks the same from the inside. After a few years on food distribution, sometimes I wonder how do I manage to keep eating ;)

Ditto.

After only a couple days of working as a fry cook at KFC has cured me of eating thier chicken. I held that job for about 8 months, and didn't eat KFC chicken for about 5 years.

I took the pieces from a KFC bucket meal once and put them all together... they made a cat.

OK, now I gotta tell you the whole reason I had a problem.

It had NOTHING to do with the typical clenliness (or lack) at a fast food joint, or anything like that.

One of the secrets of KFC's flavor is they marinate the chicken for over an hour in a flavor solution. The way I had to do it was to empty 10 bags of chicken pieces, two chickens per bag, into a barrel that had a hose and grate at the bottom. Then add water, and the seasoning, and roll it into the walk-in, and attach an air pump to the hose. It did a great job of circulating things to get the marinade done.

But when the hour was up, I had to dump the barrel, then take 4 wings, 4 legs, 4 thighs, 4 breasts and 2 keels and put it into bags.

I felt like I was re-assembling the chickens, and it totally wierded me out.

And it is for THAT reason I couldn't eat KFC for several years.

Now back to the original topic.

How's that graveyard shift at the casino going?

As a young man I worked graveyards Mid-8 am for several years stocking grocery shelves. So long ago I had to stamp
the price on the cans. Biggest problem was sun came up around 7 am and filtered thru big glass front windows,
By the time I got in the car I was wide awake and the pool hall and race track were calling my name LOL

It is fine, mid week is terribly slow! Around 4AM today (which feels like yesterday) there were only 3 table games open and nobody needed anything so I was just standing around chatting. I love the fact I make more money than I did at my last job (Noah's/Einstein Bagel's Shift Manager) and I do not have to deal with food, doing dishes, or sweeping/mopping or any cleaning! What I dislike is the fact I have not been able to find that regular office job I have been searching for. I cannot live off of the wages I make here in the SF Bay Area, but it is a nice change. Today my drawer was over $90, I cannot figure out how that happened!
