I had heard this on the radio and then saw this on their website:

"Due to severe weather, Horseshoe Casino Cleveland will close at 3am, January 6th, until further notice. Please check Facebook and Twitter, or call 216-297-4777 for updates".

Maybe I am just a skeptic at heart, but it seems odd that they would close due to the "polar vortex" currently affecting the country. Any other conspiracy theorists out there ?

Not conspirist, but definitely find it odd. Casinos don't close, period. The only thing I can think is A) it's costing too much to keep the place warm, B) employees are having trouble making it in, or C) weather is keeping patrons away and it ain't worth keeping the place warm and the lights on.

Guessing C leading to A also.

All of the above. They're worried not enough people
will venture out in the weather to make the daily
bottom line. Probably a good call, turn down the
thermostat and take a day off.

Mayor of Indianapolis shut down everything except emergency services.
So dealing with gov't "powers that be" is another obstacle in situations like this.

AC closes when the Gov declares a "State of Emergency". Still seems strange.

this is incorrect. NJ was under a state of emergency declared by Gov. Christie last week during "Winter Storm Hercules" and all the casinos remained open.

AC casinos only close when they determine the severe weather will directly affect them. Or when they get bought out for parts.

The last two times casinos in NJ were closed were Hurricanes Sandy and Irene.

And apparently it is warm enough now ( 2 deg F per Weather.com ) to open back up. I wonder if they had a furnace break or something and they didn't want to admit that in their refurbished old department store building.

This is posted now on their website:

- "Horseshoe Casino Cleveland will reopen at 4pm, January 7th. Please check Facebook and Twitter, or call 216-297-4777 for updates."

It's possible something embarrassing happened but I've gone to casinos on days like this and it was a total ghost town with maybe 10 people there. Most people are sane enough to stay home on days like sub zero temps and cars often bite it in this kind of weather.
I am a robot.

As far as I can tell from their Facebook page, Hollywood Casino Toledo closed on January 5th due to weather and STILL hasn't reopened.

If they are not getting trucks in to deliver food they can't serve much.
If they are not getting brave motorists why bother to force dealers to drive to work.
Better to announce skeleton operations, priorities to highway safety, emergency shelter for Fire and Police operations...and then reopen when they can for full operations.

They closed Hollywood Toledo again last night at 11:00 because of snow.

Reopened this morning at 9:00 with "limited offerings."

Wimps.

Here in Columbus we stayed open through the bad weather, but it kicked the hell out of our customer base, some of our restaurants didn't open the full time, and dealers called out right and left (including me this past Wednesday due to a stuck car. I called to tell the pencil I'd be late, then got my car unstuck, only to get it stuck 15 feet later and unable to dig it out. I said, "The hell with it," called out, parked my car, and went back to bed.)

I can imagine two places that get severe cold and snow throwing in the towel for a couple of days. Part of me says we should have done the same.
