Don't get me wrong, I enjoy Madonna's music: I have quite a few of her CD's, and still listen to them on occasion.

But she hasn't had anything new out for about four years, which is forever in the music biz.

Sure, she's an icon, and of a stature similar to The Who and The Stones, so I can understand them wanting her to perform, just as they dragged those dinosaurs out not too long ago.

It is just sad to now think of her as another "Geezer," getting by on what she once did, not what she's doing now.

Makes me feel sort of ... old ...

I can understand for shows like this. Ever tried to sing and dance at the same time? It's incredibly difficult. Anyone who can do both well AND at the same time aren't just talented, they're physically gifted. It's no mean feat.

But, if you're a crooner, or otherwise stand in one spot and don't flail about, then let's hear the real thing. If, say, Adele got up there and didn't move per her usual, I'd expect to hear her actual voice. If I was up there and they wanted me to synch, I'd be offended and tell them to buzz off. I'm surprised not that it happens, but that more artists don't demand to sing.
Lady Gaga has a live mic but a crutch backing track. She may be goofy but she's most certainly talented.

The main act tends to be someone whose been a superstar for a long time (at least now it seems that way). Perry and Gaga are far too new.
Nope.

After the "Nipple seen 'round the world," they have been going with acts that are generally safe.

It was something of a shock to me that they chose Madonna, particularly considering her history of being cutting edge / racy.

It's all listed here: http://www.nfl.com/superbowl/history/entertainment

2004 - Janet & Justin
2005 - Paul McCartney (can you get any more safe than Sir Paul?)
2006 - Rolling Stones
2007 - Prince
2008 - Tom Petty
2009 - Bruce Springsteen
2010 - The Who
2011 - Black Eyed Peas (halftime is starting to get over the nipple)
2012 - Madonna (and the world is focused on her fishnets...)

Prince's 2007 show convinced me to go see him when he played live here.

If you ever get a chance to see Prince live, and "kinda like" his brand of funk, do it. That show was worth every cent of the $90 I spent, even though I had behind the stage seats (he performs in the round, anyways). Phenomenal.

2012 - the world is focused on the British lady flipping the bird... I hadn't realized MIA was about my age, and started off as a art student working with Elastica's Justine Frischmann.

Um, ALL movie musicals (and now TV shows) operate this way. A studio recording translates better to CD/MP3 sales so they have to pre-record the music.

Pre-recording the songs predates CDs and MP3s; at least one episode of Happy Days did this. I assume it is because if you try to have the actors sing "during the taping" and have to add live musicians to it for the background, (a) the recording won't be as clear as if it was done in the studio, and (b) you don't have to worry about having to do endless takes until you get one where nobody makes a mistake.

Did you not see her performing her new single, "Give Me All Your Lovin' "? It was released last week, if memory serves.

Not to mention in movies like "The Sound of Music," or "Fiddler on the Roof" you simply can't have musicians following the actors across a location while they sing. Nor can you shoot several locations and/or sets while they sing "live." You'd have to keep the actors, and musicians, in a sound stage suitable for live music. You'd then lose all the freedom allowe dby the movie camera, and thats' the point of shooting a movie like that?

So, yes, all musicals on TV and film are lip-synched, to songs recorded in a studio prior to filming.

In live theater, though, with controlled acoustics and a live orchestra, the actors should sing live each performance. But theater is a live performance to begin with.

Ah, so she has a new album coming out?

That explains her desire to perform, for free ... in support of a new release.

And no, I hadn't heard it before, it had not had airplay on the iheart stations, which of course is her target audience.

The trend and it is good IMHO is get a proven and timeless act. SB is most watched show all year so need something for everybody.

I don't know. She does have a new single. I heard it in, of all places, a morning talk show last Friday.

I favor having Shakira over next year. I don't care for her music, but she has a great voice.
