I don't know how many miles it was but I'm pretty sure I'm the only nutball to do it.

On my last trip to Vegas I had some time to kill before hooking up with my buddies. I've always thought about walking from the airport to whatever hotel I was staying at so I decided it would be the perfect time to try it. I walked from Mcarran International Airport to Paris and dropped off my carry-on in my room.

I also needed to get to the Plaza to cash-out a promotion they sent me so I headed right back downstairs and ended up walking all the way down to the old part of the strip.

Don't ask me why I did it. I couldn't tell you why I ran a marathon or walked up the 95 flights of stairs of the John Hancock Building either.

This reminds me of the time that I asked a friend who was going to Vegas to do me a favor and pick up a $1 chip from each casino on the Strip (his first time there). At first he didn't think it was that big a deal but I wonder how long he would have taken if he really did it.

That sounds like a challenge. I think i might try that on my next trip to Vegas in June.

Don’t knock walking. It is a good way to see the city and get some exercise at the same time. My first time in New York City, when I was about 20, I had a whole day free and almost no money. So I walked from Times Squares to central Central Park, saw the whole Met, and then walked all the way to Brooklyn via the bridge. Then I walked back to Manhattan and took a subway back to my cheap hotel.

Can anyone do the John Hancock stairs? I've always wanted to try that on a tall building.

Often, scenery can affect the ability to walk great distances.

I love walking. Unfortunately, the first time I suggested to my wife that we walk a portion of the strip, it was from the Stratosphere to Circus Circus.

I actually said to her "It's only about an inch on the map."

So we walked. At about 2pm. In August.

What a mistake that was.

At one point she remarked that Circus Circus seemed to be getting further away. I didn't say anything, but I actually agreed with her.

At one point, her griping was so bad, I said, OK, once we get there, we'll take a cab to the next casino - Slots-O-Fun.

I had no idea that they were so close they shared a driveway! Needless to say, we walked that one....

I am in to the $1 casino chip capture and will do that on my next trip to Vegas in January or April. When we're in Vegas, to spread out our gambling, we'll do a daily walk from our hotel (usually the Paris or Ballys) to the Mandalay Bay then all the way to the Encore. It slows down your gambling spend and drinking and increases appetite. My pet peeve is all of the hustlers on the streets trying to get you to buy into their escort like services... definitely not kid friendly, but I wouldn't bring my children to Vegas anyway.

You can sign up for a race up the John Hancock stairs once per year but I am pretty positive you just can't walk up. You can walk the CN tower stairs in Toronto.

Funny you should mention this. A bunch of buddies and myself were staying at the Stratosphere and decided to rent a car instead of taking a shuttle or taxi so we could go to Henderson to play some dollar craps at Jokers Wild (I mean, who wouldn't like to place the 6 and 8 for 3?). Anyway, we got the car for 3 of the four days and I took the car back to the airport and ran back. Something like 5.5 miles I think. Really neat running the whole strip on a December Sunday morning, though.

Oh, you mean the walk of death? That's how my wife and I now refer to the walk we decided to take from north end of the strip to the sound end. South of the old Stardust site it was like walking into a blast furnace. Not the longest walk I've ever taken there but it sure seemed like it.

Distances in Vegas are deceptive because of the size of things. Everything in Vegas is outsized, really, really big. I mean BIG. That makes everything seem closer than it really is.

The signs are huge, the hotels are huge (most of them), even the landscaping in some places is huge (like how much space the Bellagio fountains take). From the Monorail station at the Sahara you can clearly read the Hilton signs, for example.

The clear desert air and general flatness of Vegas makes things worse. There are no obstacles blocking your view, and things are very clear. From the airport you can see the Startosphere tower very clearly, and you'd swear it was only a few blocks away, not all the way to the North of the Strip.

You can trust your eyes. All those buildings and signs are there. But you can't trust your judgement of distances.

Oh, last time I walked from the Flamingo to the Wynn, making several stops along the Strip. I don't have a really long single walk without stops.

The first time my wife and I went to Vegas (about 10 years ago) we were staying at the Sahara. Our "marathon" walk was all the way down to Mandalay Bay and back. We stopped into as many joints as we could along the way. I played a quarter video poker in each (most were still giving coin payouts except NY NY at that time). I played single coins until I was up or lost a buck. Could have won a dollar could have won a quarter, didn't matter; I just wanted to be able to say I played at almost every place on the strip. We were young and broke. We were there on someone else's dime. Funny thing is; now that my coworkers have introduced me to BlackJack, I only play VP when I'm up a hundred or so and want to kill some time, not loose my winnings, and grab some gratuitous comp points.
Phil: I'm pretty sure that's illegal too. Alan: Yeah, maybe after 9/11, where everybody got so sensitive. Thanks a lot, bin Laden.

Wow. I thought walking from Battery Park to Times Square was a lot...
As far as Vegas goes, we've done Mandalay to Venetian, but that's it.

I'm a local, and I spend a fair amount of time on the strip. Still, I was nearly late for Phantom (at Venetian) a couple months ago because my friend and I decided to walk from Monte Carlo with just 30 minutes until curtain. We'd have made it faster, but we didn't take into consideration the mass quantities of people on the sidewalks. Most of them were putzing along, three wide in their group. We, literally, sat down in our seats seconds before the show started.

See, I think there is a demand for exercise oriented forms of transport around the strip. I posted a threat about the Shweeb, which I think is very compatible with the casual dress of most people in Vegas.

I was in Atlantic City this past weekend. I stay at Showboat, so I parked there. But I heard that the poker game at the Hilton has a lot of fish.

It was a nice day Saturday, so I walked the boardwalk from Showboat to Hilton. These are the two furthest boardwalk casinos. Google Maps says it's 1.9 miles. Good walk. By the time I left, it was evening, and cold, so I took the Jitney cab back!

And, yeah, there are a lot of fish in that game. But there are a lot of suck-out rookies too!

On my last trip to Vegas ... I walked from Mcarran International Airport to Paris.

I've thought about it too, but people told me that there aren't sidewalks between the airport and the neighboring streets, making the initial part of the trip dangerous. Any truth to that?

Looking closely at Google maps, if you are staying on the strip, you would take Tropicana over to Paradise south to the airport. While there is no sidewalk on the ramp to departures, it appears that there is a walkway that runs east along Kitty Hawk, then south on Marriott Way. The sidewalk continues to to the terminal from there.

But that's just the maps. I've never actually done the walk.

I answered my own question.

Looking at the satelite view in Google Maps, it looks like there are no sidewalks on the ramps.

However, if you take a slightly longer route and walk on Kitty Halk, there IS a sidewalk. In fact, the satelite shot of the intersection of Kitty Halk and Paradise shows someone in the sidewalk, just west of the ramp.
