Even I wouldn't suggest hitting Flag on each one of them....

What was the intended message? I mean, just looking at the various thread headings, which were just random characters, some in an Asian languages, it was just weird.
Did anybody look at any of the posts? I looked at one it was just a bunch of nonsense characters, repeated a couple dozen times.
WTF!
Quote: Zugaspam bots can easily bypass captcha these days. we are currently working on improving the Anti-bot registration form
I've seen newer versions where you have to answer a question. Seems like that might be tougher for a bot to do.

If there's some bots I didn't get, I'm not worried. They seem to be disposable, that is, each bot posts once or twice and then goes quiet. The real fix is preventing them from entering in the first place, which Zuga is currently working on
Quote: RonCThere seem to be a few more of them out there still not in Red...does that mean they may come back or is this particular spam attack over?
I have blocked their IPs so there should be no more spam attacks ( at least from those users ). However these spammers often change their IPs / proxies, so will see what happens. In the mean time , and as stated already, we are working on preventing this scum from registering in future..
Also ill ask our techs to delete all these spam/bot accts.
Quote: 1BBThat's 110 names in red that shouldn't even be anywhere on this site but, hey, they boost the membership figures.
Its almost like you imply that we welcomed these spam bots just for the sake of membership figures?? We did have to ban these accts first, hence why they were all in red.
Anyways all those spam accts are now deleted.

Nah. Sorry you took it that way. I think the forum would be much tidier without all the red. On the other hand the red could show other spammers that you mean business when it comes to that type of nonsense.

Or... unable to start new threads, or unable to post for the first 24 hours after registering, or...

Wonder if a bot could figure out the following:
Quote:Your initial password will be sent to you by email in the following format(1).
Carefully note that your actual working password must be reinterpreted by you in the second format(2), as that WILL NOT be sent in the email.
EXAMPLE
1. ABCD1234
2. BCDE2345
After signing in with this password you may change it if you wish.
Hopefully all humans can see what they need to do and bots can't. Of course, each password sent would be random, but never have the letter Z or number 9. Leastwise, I don't see how a bot could figure that out -- there's no clue in the instructions it can pick up on. A person helping a bot could break it, but then someone could always do that with any system.
I suppose you could even make it a bit more complex, but it might confuse some of the humans. : )

Here's a fitting one for this site. Definitely weed out the spammers and about 90% of new users. :)

I don't have any figures but it seems that these things occur more often on weekends when things are a little quieter and there are less people around to notice. Perhaps a temporary fix would be to allow applications for membership on Monday to Friday only. Another thought would be to give a few trusted members some type of accelerated flagging power.
I just don't understand the motives of the people responsible for this. Most here don't speak the language in the posts so they most likely won't patronize the advertised sites. At least when our baccarat friend showed up we knew what we were dealing with.
We've introduced new anti spam measures upon registration. This will hopefully prevent new spam bots from registering an account with WoV. Unfortunately this was not in place to prevent the spam from just bit earlier and will not have an effect against potential other or dormant bots that registered prior this new anti-spam feature. We will have to deal with them manually.
We will keep monitoring the boards and keep tweaking things if needed be.
cheers

These spammers can easily reprogramme and switch to English spam posts. So that would not really solve the problem.
Is it you or someone else (or the system) who keeps changing my avatar? He's not running anymore. :(

When I found a similar issue with mine, I re-created my avatar at 70x70 pixels (what they had resized it to).
Animated GIFs are obviously slightly more tricky to resize than still images.

I remember Nyan cat NOW. All this time I thought that was a "Hello Kitty". Neither to be confused with Keyboard Cat, and Grumpy Cat.

My apologies to all, I am almost never here from late Saturday night to early Monday night.
New thread just posted.
Good luck!
Oh, you meant that foreign language thread I just blasted. Sorry, my mistake.
You Spammers want a piece of this!? You *&3$+:% with the wrong Admin!!!
Cowards!!!!
Come back and engage me in armed and equal combat. Give me a brief respite in between challengers, or come at me all at once for it shall change not the outcome. Administrators before me have fought and died on these very sub-forums for the one Truth that makes a man a man and makes all of ye Spammers nothing more than organized sheeple!!!
That Truth, aye, that principle is freedom! And, if you dare disrupt the freedom to have an uncluttered list of the ten most recent threads with posts to more efficiently pursue our conversations, then ye shall find your blood dripping off of the tip of my pike.

If spambots could read, this would be excellent spam-deterrent material.
Keep fighting the good fight, brave warrior.
But one effective anti-spam measure some boards use is restricting starting new threads until members have a certain number of participation posts in existing threads (For example users cannot start new threads until 20 posts and 48 hours of membership). This still allows some bots to spam existing threads, however it prevents the board from getting flooded with new spam threads and the individual posts can be picked apart in the threads easy enough.
An additional measure is requiring your profile to be filled out completely before allowing posting. Or require a verification with an admin (meaning before posting is authorized you have to PM an admin who verifies your account and approves you to post).
Or if you want to get really secure (though I am sure this would be highly unpopular with some on here) since this is a gambling site, you can require members be 21 and submit a copy of their ID before they get posting privileges. Obviously this is fairly easy to fake online, the main benefit is preventing spam bots from getting through since they would not be able to email photos of their IDs. However, the downside of this is it is a lot of work for the admins as they would have to manually look and verify each member's ID, and it can scare off new members with all of the work required to register. But this is a surefire way to prevent spammers from joining. It would also prevent trolls coming in with tons of accounts.
