Like the clickbait title?

Well if this story is true (I have some doubt), the thread title would be entirely accurate:

http://www.businessinsider.com/how-lockheed-martins-nuclear-fusion-works-2014-10

100MW reactors on the back of a truck, no harmful emissions... This would change the world as we know it today, politically and socially. What do you all think?

This is already under discussion at DT.

I put this on DT where it belongs. The
new owners have asked this to be
about gambling, and Mike has said
no gambling threads on DT.

so people that don't go to DT can't discuss things other than gambling. Just curious where the new owners asked this to be only gambling?

Frankly, no.

I have every doubt. I think Clarke said fusion energy is 20 years away, every 20 years. Or something like that.

But at least this development doe snot claim anything too improbable, like using sound waves to force gas into fusion (not energetic enough), or cold fusion (not real enough). So maybe this one is real. Whether it works or not, I reserve judgment until I see it work.

Weeeeelll, not quite. The reason to sue deuterium and tritium is that they have more neutrons. Neutrons don't repel each other, nor do they repel protons. But tritium has three nucleons, and the end product, the helium atom, has 4. This means two neutrons will end up flying away after each atom is fused. These will be highly energetic neutrons heated to millions of degrees and under a lot of pressure. I expect they'll be hard to contain.

In other words, your reactor will grow increasingly radioactive due to high-speed, hot, energetic neutrons striking every surface within reach. But at least your main by-product will be helium, which should be safe enough.

And the fuel is cheap and plentiful, too.

Not that we had them anyways but didn't hear about the no-compete clause.

It's on DT, Mike came right out and said
no gambling or casino threads on DT, he
doesn't want to compete with WoV.

As far as limiting this board to gambling only topics: they should remove the "Off Topic" thread area, if that is what they want.

Otherwise, keep posting off topic, it's allowed.

It's always been a gray area and until told otherwise I think it is fair to post off topic things here.

well not everyone goes to that board. Obviously that was part of the buy out, I am sure he has a non compete clause.

I am not in the loop on content changes, if any. So I would say carry on (within reason and in accordance with past practice) until something is posted on this board by either Wizard or Zuga posts something differently. I could be wrong.

I thought Bob was in charge of allowable content now? I must of misunderstood...

Having read some more about this, what Lockheed seems to have made is a better magnetic field that may solve one of the stickiest problems in making a fusion reaction. That's not the same as having developed a prototype working fusion reactor.

Fusion means limitless energy as far as fuel is concerned. There's so much hydrogen in the world we'll never run out of it. And it's very very cheap. But we don't know yet how expensive a fusion reactor will be to operate. Just the same, this is interesting news and may rank up there with the development of other revolutionary technologies like the transistor, the microchip, or the cellular network.

What one must keep in mind is that thousands of people and billions of dollars have been applied to fusion research for decades, without as yet significant results. If cell phones had developed at the same pace, then for a few millions of dollars you could today make a call lasting a tiny fraction of a second from a unit as big as a mobile home.

In contrast it took less then 30 years from the first laboratory-observed uranium fission to working fission reactors.

But then fission is absurdly simple, the problem being how to contain the reaction so it won't produce too much energy. In fusion the problem is producing any energy at all.

I apologize for the interruption, You may now return to the pointless argument about posting on topic, whatever the hell the topic happens to be.

Probably means "delirium tremens."

Delirium tremens is a severe form of alcohol withdrawal that involves sudden and severe mental or nervous system changes.

It can, if left untreated, lead to the posting of vapid posts on obscure message boards such as "Diversity Today."
