Hot yes. Humid yes!
Did spend a little time on the lake yesterday AM, that was nice.
Then spent a big chunk of time following my boys around a park or two as they chased invisible Pokemon things. Was quite a sight, people of all ages running around the park staring at their phones. Maybe it qualifies as a fitness craze? I was sweating like a pig just slowly walking ;-!

Back in the late 60:-/ early 70s, I didn't get a lot of chances to see out of town basketball games on tv..
I'd have loved to see some of the Wilt vs Nate matchup.

Here's youtube video of Nate. at 54 seconds he shoots a jumper over Wilt. At 1:04 he blocks Jabbar's sky hook. At 44 seconds he outjumps Bill Russell by a lot to get the tip on a jump ball. There are a few other youtube videos of him.

Anybody know anything about healthcare through the ACA?

Long story short, my wife's salary was practically halved due to a forced change in employment. When she tried to adjust her salary on the healthcare.gov website in the hopes of getting her subsidy increased, they said it would be completely eliminated. As in, she would get $0 in subsidies.

Anybody have any freakin' idea why her healthcare payments would go UP if she is making substantially LESS money??

You only mentioned your wife's salary, don't the subsidies apply to your combined income since you are married?

My salary has stayed exactly the same through all this, and our total household income has decreased by probably 25% in the last year. We're not sure what the deal is; we might have to just call somebody up and ask what's going on. It's possible we just entered some incorrect information on the website, because it is after all notoriously awful.

Probably some confusion about proper enrollment period. You may have to wait for that.

It all comes out in the wash come tax time.

Re: Better Coffee

I've all my life searched for the perfect cup of coffee and I have more time on my hands now so I started making my morning coffee manually. I put a brown coffee filter over a strainer (sieve) and then put the strainer over my coffee mug. Then, I grind the beans and put the grounds into the filter. Then, I boil water in a saucepan and slowly pour the hot water just before it is bubbling over the grounds and let it seep through the strainer and into the mug. I know some will say that almost boiling water is too hot and will harm the taste but I haven't found that to be the case. My coffee is now WAY better. The hotter water makes it stronger, but the main reason it is better is because it is much fresher because unless you are ocd about cleaning your coffeemaker then the device is probably filthy and the residue is causing a bitter taste and worse. My coffee now is fresh and strong. Try it yourself. You won't be disappointed. Better than Starbucks. Here is an article about dirty coffeemakers:

Don't you refrigerate your beans?

Steam is better than hot water, but hot water is okay.

Time in contact with the beans is major factor.

Never let coffee touch metal.

Keep them Qtips near the sink when you wash your coffee maker.

Use the same products in cleaning a coffee maker that you would in sterilizing glass ware for the making of beer or wine.

Yes, I refrigerate, but my coffeemaker is officially retired. The next thing I'm going to do is buy beans from the chain Quartermaine. Their coffee is really strong; they have an angle of roasting the coffee locally so it's been roasted much more recently than competitors. It's a nice hook. But I'm sure their beans are very expensive.

I've seen it said to not refrigerate the coffee beans. Successive moisture blasts from condensation is not good, according to this thinking. If you live in a very dry place this might not apply.

I get my coffee from a friend of mine. She and her husband have a small farm on the slopes of Kona. If you're going to pay for premium beans, there are none better. They've learned a lot since they started, and are now winning intl competitions.

They pick and roast as they sell, and ship fresh. PM me if you'd like their info.

Thanks very much for that offer. I'm going to first buy a very small amount of premium beans in bulk; a couple of bucks worth and then compare it to the cheaper stuff I'm now drinking to see if there's a big difference.

I don't get it at all. Everyone was warning me about "the fine", cuz I had no insurance. I spent a not insignificant time making a list of how I was going to recoup that resource back from .gov, did my taxes, and had no evidence that ACA even existed. Many I know were dinged hundreds for it. I skipped through scot-free.

Sorry I don't have real advice. But if you'd not mind getting a divorce (on paper) and changing your residence (on paper), you could probably white trash your way into being better off than before your wife's pay cut.

There are a whole list of reasons for not having to pay the penalty, from religious objections to being the member of NA tribe. It looks to me like they put all these threats in to make everyone get insurance but they don't hold up well for many with the rest of the rules.

My last trip to Vegas I was amazed at the high quality of so many buskers. Of course, they're not all great but several were. They were way better than the ones in the big city near where I live. One guy at the Freemont St. experience had an electric guitar and was playing Santana note for note. It was awesome. Kind of sad that with all that talent they're on the street for $1 tips.

Pokemon Go Alert!
So for the last two weeks the 11 and 13 year old sons went Pokenuts.
Then wife Sparkles got an acct last weekend so she could see what they were doing....

Last week I took them to several parks and demanded they tell me where the 'stops' were along the way so I could understand WTF they were jabbering about.......

I've taken my 11 year old son to a two hour soccer practice each day this week, been hot as hell.
I was bored. I can't be picking up the soccer moms, I promised.

So I uploaded the damn App this morning. Holy Jhit!
Level 5, 30+ captures, Team Blue, Raspberries, Incense, frankincense, and Myrrh.
Stardust, and eggs in the incubator.
'I've fallen and I can't get up'.

Meanwhile the boys have learned how to hack the system and are typing in GPS coordinates all over the world, beaming in like Star Trek characters and raiding the gyms, and apparently beaming out again undetected. They were playing in Indonesia or Australia till I made them go to bed.......so much for this helping get them outside, they are glued to their laptops again.

I have another two hour soccer practice tomorrow. I have a lure. I know 15 stops and 6 gyms within 5 minutes of the field. I plan to retire from the game tomorrow evening.

I have spent part of a day chasing funny cartoon characters around the neighborhoods.
Hopefully the next game more closely resembles the Wiz's escort cards.
Then I could get really excited ;-)

only freshwater panfish you catch yourself should be fried with cornmeal, so I love that, but agree that's not what I want in a restaurant. Broiled for fish there; not much fried in any case [calamari is good tho]

Better Coffee Part 2

My earlier post on better coffee created such a worldwide sensation that I decided to expand upon it:

Cold Brewed Ice Coffee
No hot water, no coffeemaker.
I was worried that the cream wouldn't dissolve well but it was no problem.
I tweaked the linked instructions by leaving it in the fridge overnight instead of outside at room temperature.
The coffee is still very strong but smoother.
It's a winner, winner. Serve with chicken dinner.

My car said I averaged 71mph. The 9 stops were all quick just to get a chip except for 1 which we played for about an hour and had dinner. We also had a stop for about an hour at a place and throw in 4 gas stops and 2 bathroom stops.

Btw, I was off on my miles. We did a total of 1187 but only 1004 on the way home. The other 183 were done the first day we were out?

I drove the entire time, wife was going to take over at one point. I told her to wait until next exit when we got gas which was about 5 miles. Right before the exit I look over and she is asleep. I grabbed an extreme 5 hour, coffee, and a pepsi and powered through. I was wired for the next 4 hours. There was only 1 time during the drive that I am not sure how I got about 5 miles down the highway. That was a sign for another round of the above.

I woke up yesterday at 5am and haven't been to sleep yet. I feel like death currently but too late to take a nap. At this point a nap would be bed time. I can't believe I used to go 48 hours with no sleep often as a kid.

OK, only 1187 miles in 21 hours.
With an hour for gaming at one casino, and dinner.
And another 8 casino stops, 4 gas stops, and 2 restroom stops.

That's pushing 70 MPH average every minute the engine is running.

oh silly 2f, you are way overthinking this.

first 4 stops were done before we even hit the highway since they were close by. Took less than 10 minutes at each since all I did was run in to get chip.

1 casino for about an 90 min for dinner and play.

4 casinos at less than 10 minutes each as I pull up to the door and run in to grab a chip. Wife waits in the car so we don't have to spend extra time parking and walking.

Lets call it 20 min each for bathroom breaks and 20 minutes each at the gas stations.

That all leaves me over 17 hours to make the drive which the GPS called 15 hours for.

Obviously you made it home safe, this is a good thing.
We would have missed you.

I did work in the transportation industry for 20+ years, after failing miserably in several other industries.
I wasn't artfull enough to make it in the art/craft industry.
I wasn't brutal enough to make it in the drug dealer industry.
I did well in the transportation industry for many years.

You say you averaged almost 70 MPH.
I used to work with 50 as optimal, and only the cheaters kept it that high. We had some really good cheaters ;-)

Oh, just Silly Feathers.

Speed limit for 90% of the drive was 70. Had cruise set on 78 and sometudes pushed in over 80 if I was reasonably certain their were no cops.

I was 18 on my way back from the Soaring Eagle in Mt. Pleasant, fell asleep at the wheel. Luckily my good buddy was like "WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!?" We ended up taking a nap at the gas station as we drove after work 400 miles gambled then drove home no sleep. It was scary, now we laugh about it.

Yeah it sucks and was scary. I pulled into the next rest stop to have a bathroom break with the intention to take a nap. I went to bathroom and threw some water in my face. As I walked back to the car I felt wide awake. I figured I would drive some more knowing there was another rest stop about 20 miles away. I was completely fine after that. I am not sure that I was actually tired but when driving at night on the highway sometimes the reflectors hypnotize me.

Ps my phone is driving me crazy with this auto correct. It fixes a correct word to gibberish then I go back to fix it and it fixes it again to crap. It changes my that into thay. I quit fixing those. I must have typed it wrong once so now it has thay in the memory

Re your ps. I'm having the same problem. What is slowly fixing it, is whenever gibberish appears in the selections below where I'm typing, I stop typing, touch and hold the gibberish word, and a popup says, this word will be removed from your autocorrect : cancel or ok. I ok it, and it's gone. Then I go on typing. Hope this helps.
