Martin posted a tweet on Tuesday which read, “When I was a young man, Carrie Fisher was the most beautiful creature I had ever seen. She turned out to be witty and bright as well.”

After the post, some people began freaking out. My question is WHY on earth are people upset with his post ???

A little tiresome, your ascribing this problem only to the left. Who's the most thin-skinned, umbrage - taking person on twitter? Why, none other than our PE, hero of the right.

Beautiful and witty do not intersect all that often. A beautiful actress emoting lines written by others is a shell, and who knows what is inside. Over years, we found out, in Carrie Fisher's case. She was fearless and candid about her thoughts and her life, in her writing and directing.

She was a member of a special and exclusive club of uncredited script doctors; only the very best are asked to do that. Hard to know what she worked on, but reportedly many of the best comedies of the 80's and 90's got her treatment.

So what Steve Martin, whose 80's stand-up would probably not survive the boo birds today, said is a HUGE compliment to the person, not the screen entity that many people obsess about. Pity people can't read in context.

Quite a poor choice of words to say "creature" instead of "woman" Steve has been around the ultra PC Hollywood crowd long enough to know better than that one.

And some ultra feminist SJW's may choose to be offended/consider it sexist anytime they are complimented about anything.

This wasn't about being a Politically Correct Creature or a Social Justice Warrior, for as long as Steve Martin had been in LA-LA Land, L.A.

He said a very kind sentiment for an actress and daughter of the film industry, and he said it and meant it on terms of endearment, not meaning here to plug in another film title.

Someone who was attacked and demonized daily in the campaign can take all the umbrage he can find. The fact that every single one of the women who accused him of harassment has remained totally mute after her five minutes of fame speaks loudly and clearly as to what was being perpetrated.

What Martin wrote was quite a compliment.

He basically said that on sight, she was beautiful. (Nothing wrong with that comment.)
He then said that as he got to know her, she turned out to be intelligent as well. (Also, nothing wrong with that comment.)

This would be my guess, though I wouldn't say it was a poor choice of words on his part. I imagine he deleted the tweet primarily because he does not want this moment to be about him, or PC, or whatever, rather than her.

1) Humans can be creatures.

2) In this context, it's meant as a kind of metaphor. It does suggest an otherness, but we're not talking about race here. Mens and womens be really different. She's a creature to him because she seems so much more beautiful and delicate than he is.

The decoder ring for these situations is to imagine it reversed. If a woman met you and said you seemed like a tiger, you'd have to be a mental patient to be offended.

Oddly, the critics are creating a much more negative portrayal of women: literal minded, uptight, wet blankets.

No opportunity to attack Trump can be ignored; Steve Martin makes a nice tweet about someone, the PC cops show up and say how bad it is (even though it isn't!!), and someone finds a way to tie in Trump into the conversation because, well, he tweets stuff, too. Those who dislike Trump seem to be incapable of leaving him out of any conversation instead of confining their comments about him and the rest of the election stuff in the multiple threads that are already there.

It makes it harder for those who ignore stuff like that to just ignore those threads when it gets interlaced into many threads.

There is absolutely nothing wrong with Steve Martin's tweet. I t was a huge compliment to her.

She was bi-polar, not crazy. Both her and
Patty Duke, who also died in 2106, were
bi-polar. Carrie Fisher wasn't much of an
actress, but she did a lot for bi-polar
awareness. I'll always remember her for
writing Postcards From the Edge, where
she talks about her problems. And she
also described how her mom, a young
Debbie Reynolds, danced on a table
at one of her bday parties when she was
little, in a skirt and not wearing any
panties. As a kid I had a huge crush
on Debbie, this story gave me pleasure
for many years as an adult.

This feels like an ad hominem attack on me, to which I say, stop interjecting (wasn't you personally) "left" this and "liberal" that into a non-political conversation, and you'll stop getting Trump thrown in your face. Pot and kettle. It's offensive bs to not be able to discuss what others might see in Steve Martin's tweet without pushing political stereotyping and whining. I responded in kind.

So the PC crowd, which is basically liberal folks, can't be called that without the threat of introducing Trump into the conversation? Trump was not the subject of the thread, Martin and the PC crowd were.

Trump and Clinton had squat to do with perception different people had of the Martin tweet.

On first sight, he can immediately conclude that she is beautiful, but he can't necessarily know that she is indeed witty and bright until he actually gets to know her. (However, there is some strong research that you can recognize intelligent people on sight.)

I should add that there's nothing wrong with recognizing someone for their beauty.

I don't really see it that way. The thing is billionaires seem to have the ability to immediately get along with just about anyone and overlook any hurtful things that have been said about them. Trump really doesn't appear to be any different. A good example is Mitt Romney, Paul Ryan, and Rubio. After the election, his business sense actually had him considering Romney for secretary of state, despite the terrible things that had been said. I suppose you could even argue that one of the reasons that people like Trump are so successful is because they don't really hold grudges. They're intensely competitive and enjoy the fight, but they don't appear to actually hold grudges.

Trump's thing is, not only to accomplish something,
but once he's done it, to excel at it. Doesn't always
work, like with the casinos. But by and large, he's
not a quitter, he likes his name connected to
things that are excellent. Hotels, golf courses,
apartment buildings. His presidency won't
be any different. He will try every day to excel,
he can't help it, it's his nature. Just think polar
opposite of Obama and you've got it.

Oh, I know that part. But you equated PC with liberal, so let me ask you the same unanswered question I asked last week of someone else:

What about "liberal" do you find insulting? Do you believe in freedom of speech and religion? How about democracy and freedom from religious government? Those are all classic liberal tenets. Are you opposed to them?

(wow, off topic, but I just got a phone call from area code 702 (Las Vegas) that, when I answered, was a recording of "Kelly with the limitless income team." I laughed and hung up. I thought I wasn't supposed to get telemarketing calls on my cell phone...)

I think ANYTHING can go to far...Liberalism or Conservatism.... Liberals have helped swing the pendulum too far in the direction of political correctness. I think way too many liberals out there are so scared of insulting anyone in any little way that we can't accept many things that are said as the compliments that they are; something has to be found wrong with them.

Our culture decided to be more liberal with the distribution of trophies that we stopped honoring winners and honored everyone. That may be okay at the youngest age, but now our children don't figure out that there are winners and losers until way too late. Mediocrity is rewarded with participation trophies and it isn't important to win. Except that, well, it is important to win. Not so important as to trample everyone on the way, but important enough to make winning a goal.

Look at you. You won at what you do. You got that by a will to win, not a will to participate.

I laugh at liberals who whined about people bellyaching about Obama's Presidency now sitting around and whining about Trump's upcoming Presidency. No, darn it, go WIN. Go out and fight for your cause. Articulate it well. Make people understand why your positions are better than the other side's. Face your loss, figure out why, and move on.

...then I say...go ahead...whine away...maybe you'll lose again in two years because you wasted all your time whining!

I think in this context, liberal describes a certain stereotype of a person who supports Democrats, rather than a classical liberal (which almost all of us are). The perfect form of such a person is probably Leena Dunham.

Anyway, there's definitely a conservative (though that's another mislabeling) version of the PC liberal. They believe that there should be trigger warnings when Darwin or sex education are taught, or that nobody should learn about them at all. Instead of constantly searching for sexism or racism to be offended by, it's "you don't support the trooooops!" "You're on the side of terrorists!" "OMG Communism!"

In both cases, it's a self-righteous hypocrite who spends a great deal of energy policing the morality of others.

I think everyone here, both left and right, can agree with this.

The outrage over the tweet was stupid. Steve Martin's intentions were obviously sincere. But that's Twitter. People are always looking for things to be outraged over.

But it seems to me that Keyser started this thread with the intention of wanting to attack liberals for it, as he did in his 2nd post. Which is why it then delved into your standard political thread with plenty of mentions of the Orange one.
