Which numbers?

Only slightly better than placing six and eight, but leagues better than placing the other numbers.

Plus, when you first make a come bet it acts as a hedge, so that if the devil dances the come wins while any line and place bets lose.

The come bet (see this Wizard page) has a house edge of 1.41%. The come bet's house edge is less than those of bets on the numbers (place bets.) Here are the place bet house edges: 6 or 8 (1.52%), 5 or 9 (4%), and 4 or 10 (6.67%.)

Most of the time its a more a matter of personal style and preferences than exact math carried out to four decimal places.

After all, after a few drinks and tips... you've given back that fourth decimal place for sure.

By "betting on the numbers" I think you mean place bets. More house edge. Paid the first time they hit. What do you LIKE is the first rule of betting wisely.

Remember a Come Bet is nothing other than a Come Out Pass Line Bet maid for YOUR convenience. If you want to just stand around waiting for your Pass Line bet to be resolved you can. Come Bets merely let you continue your action. The "puck" shows the pass line number that you are betting on, your come bet stack shows the Come Number, but the rules are same as a Pass Line Bet. Win on Seven and Eleven; Lose on 2, 3, 12.... go into the bonus round on all the other numbers.
