For those who don't know, Mackinaw Island is in
between the lower and upper parts of MI, in
the Straits of Mackinaw, near the big bridge.
It was a fort at one time, which is still there. It
has no motorized vehicles, except emergency.
The Grand Hotel is the showpiece of the island,
been there for over 125 years. Its where they
shot the movie 'Somewhere in Time' with Chris
Reeve. Its well worth the trip if you've never
been there, its a gorgeous tourist destination.
My wife and her 3 sisters stay at the hotel every
Sept for 4 days. This year, for some reason, they
got upgraded to a 2000 sq ft 2 bedroom suite,
3 bathrooms, $1200 a night. Shock and awe
doesn't describe their reaction.

with a knife. Bicycles and horse drawn vehicles,
more historical places than you can visit in a
day, a real fort. A ferry ride from the mainland
just to get there, and if its windy, a real adventure.

Every year at the end of Oct there's a Somewhere in Time weekend at
the hotel. People dress in period costumes and members of the cast
and crew show up to talk and answer questions. This movie has an
almost cult following, but how many places can you go that were a movie
set for almost the entire film. And looks just the same as it did 32 years
ago when the movie came out.

We have something in common ! I have been
up to Mackinac several times.
I also recommend it. There are some B&B's
that are reasonable, price-wise.
We enjoy the car free environment, not that
it is totally safe, always a pack of older women
stepping into the street without looking......
