Yeah... I guess it is. Corsets were cheaper and less risky than surgery then. Those with enough money to pay for rib removal probably had more sense than to do it, considering the fees and the death rates for any surgery of the time. Plus ofcourse those with the money are less subject to the whims of the populace regarding ideal body shapes. Sometimes I ain't such a critical reasoner.

I imagine its pretty much the same with tropical islands or jungles and topless females. It was missionaries who convinced Hawaiian girls to cover their breasts.

Females in the Victorian era were so enamored of the hourglass figure some had ribs removed surgically. Flappers, as mentioned above, generally wanted to look like Twiggy. Movie stars and models tend to be well away from the "average" women in size, weight, etc.

Yet, there do seem to be some universals. Waist-to-hip ratio, for example, does a surprisingly good job of accounting for attractiveness across time periods and cultures. 0.7 or so seems to be the magic number, and coincides biologically with high rates of fertility.
