... How were you able to tell that they were prostitutes? ...

Half a dozen years ago, my wife and I were staying at the Tropicana. One evening, after she had headed up to bed, I was at a blackjack table along with three or four thirty-somethings who were attending a conference together. One of the guys made a comment about the hookers, and the lone girl in their group asked how he could tell they were hookers.

I looked at her and said, "Two nights ago, I was headed from the casino to my room in the Island Tower. Two hot girls in low-cut blouses were sitting up on the bridge, and when I approached, they both brightened to the point of excitement, smiled, and asked me how I was doing and where I was headed. Last night, as I approached the bridge, a different girl was sitting at a slot machine and gave me a gigantic smile. Take a good look at me -- I'm a 60-ish fat guy with a scruffy beard -- if I happened to walk past you in this hotel, would you even make eye contact?"

I think she understood just a little bit better.

The Center of the World was an interesting movie about prostitution, objectification, desire, fantasy and loneliness. It is set in a hotel suite in Vegas. The themes are extremely adult, but it is not pornography. It's not one of those stupid seedy documentaries on HBO about prostitution either. The objectives of the characters are somewhat in question, as well.

I would be interested in anyone's opinion of the movie.

I've not seen the movie that you mention and I'm not sure its in general release.

I think perhaps we might focus on the movie Stella Does Tricks which explores the world of young girls on the game. It is a world of working class backgrounds, lack of opportunities and artificially imposed constraints as humorously indicated in the scene wherein becoming a shop girl selling eclairs in a bakery is hopeless because society demands she have extensive training for such a menial position. These all condemn Stella to her life of being sexually exploited by her pimp and her customers but she nevertheless remains a young girl who needs love as well as sex. When her young boyfriend rents out Stella’s body for enough money for him to buy heroin and then steals Stella’s savings so as to keep her from leaving him, Stella realizes that this is as close to an act of love that she will ever have in her life. She is sexually exploited by middle aged men who are her customers and by a middle aged man who is her pimp, but she loves her young boyfriend and is indeed loved by him. She is sexually exploited by her need for money and by her need for love. She is trapped forever in the world of sexual exploitation by the despised middle aged men because she is trapped by the sexual exploitation of love for the boyfriend. Once there is that feeling of being trapped there is the desperation that leads to absurd decision making.

Or perhaps Trainspotting. When Renton gets off heroin he finds that his sexual desires return but all his friends are druggies and he can't really cope with the decision making requirements of the drug-free world. Its similar to prostitution wherein the low class women are exploited and the top money makers enjoy the money, power and sex too much to quit. Hobbyists exploit escorts and the Girl Friend Experience is anything but a girlfriend experience. Yet a three grand fee and five-hundred dollar tip from just one client is hard to pass up.

When I was at Aria in February I was coming down from my room around 2AM to play some more Pai Gow. This young very sexually dressed woman comes up to me and starts chatting me up asking me how I am doing, blah blah blah. She was by herself, I had a feeling she was a hooker or something. Too bad for her she didnt have the goods I was after!

An occupational hazard for her. I guess its simply a matter of numbers. The more men she speaks to the more likely she is to find one who is flush with cash as well as alcohol.

No, the hookers probably have no way of knowing that their potential customer is gay... he is male, he looks like he has money... so they make their approach. Its an occupational hazard that they will hear "no" more often that most salesmen hear no. They don't care. They charge enough to make that occasional yes profitable for them.

I thought it was quite a good movie. For it's intellectual merit, I rate it a B, but my tastes are a bit wide. I actually own a copy, which for me is a testament to how much I will like a movie. If it's worth buying, it's gotta be pretty good. Then again, i only paid like $5 for it including shipping. Hahah.

Basically, the description is quite accurate. You have a newly minted rich antisocial porn loving dot-com computer geek that falls in love with a stripper who is an aspiring rock band musician. She entertains his offer of taking her on a trip to Vegas, which begins an interlude of a seedy fantasy relationship. There are moments of humor, levity, sanguineness, loneliness, objectification, desire, fantasy, solemness etc. The movie does juxta-oppose the definitions between reality and fantasy, which I think was very well done. That is the heart of the conflict of the movie. It's very easy to identify with some of the characters, if you're open minded. It's worth seeing in my opinion, especially if you like to analyze movies. If you just want to see a few pseudo-sex scenes....just get a porn video for crying out loud.
