Trying to decide between the Aria Casino and Resort and the Mirage for a solo trip in late January trip. Both appear to be very nice for about the same price.

Wants
1) A nice pool to lay around, soak up some sun, relax, and have some drinks. Are these pools in shadow or sun during the day. 50-55 degrees in the sun is fine. Where I am from it will be -20 to -30 degrees with 50-60 mph winds.
Aria: all pools and bars open.
Mirage: 1 pool and bar open.
Any hotel other suggestions

2) Nice hotel

3) Good food

4) relaxing bars with music as well as party bars.

Any recommendations would be appreciated

late January trip...A nice pool to lay around, soak up some sun

Good luck. If there's one with an indoor pool, I'd take that one if it's that important. I've been there in December for National Finals Rodeo (going again this year) and it's not the time of year for the pool. If you like the sun, go hike around Valley of Fire without a hat. I've also been there during the Super Bowl and it has snowed.

Aria is newer and is getting desperate. Originally designed as an upscale place, it found the economy wouldn't support many of its shops and specialty restaurants so its lowered its sights a bit and lowered room rates.
Mirage is older but is likely to comp better, I'm told.

> A nice pool to lay around,
Sorry, I can't help you here. If I enter a pool, the event triggers a Tsunami Warning.
There are websites that discuss pools in Vegas but it seems they are quite a bit out of date.

>Nice hotel
Venetian/Palazzo, Wynn, Encore, Bellagio are the Top Tier ones.
Mandalay Bay Beach is a step down but has several pools and spas although its comps seem to have become very stingy of late.

With respect, have you been to Vegas before? Both are "strip" casinos (I would classify Aria as one) which means you can walk or ride (google the LV monorail) to pretty much any other casino for #'s 3 and 4. Especially if you aren't a Vegas regular, roaming around will be a big part of your trip anyways. So I am of the opinion that you should only really concentrate on #'s 1 & 2.

- Sub question #1 for OP: If you stay at one MGM/Harrah's property, are you allowed to go to another's pool?
- Sub question #2 for OP: Did they fix the "death ray" at Aria's pool?

I haven't been to either, good luck on planning a good vacation.

Thanks for the reply's. All good input.
I have been there 12-13 times in 25 years always in January or February. It is a nice place to get away from my normal January weather, -20 to -30 degree with 50+/- mph winds. I agree that it can get a little cool there, if the pool is in the sun it usually is warm enough.
Stayed at (among others)
MGM :nice hotel and pool, but the pool is in the shade and the bar is closed
Caesars: great hotel and pool, but out of my current price range
Bellagio: great hotel and pool, out of my current price range
Paris: OK hotel and decent leisure pool, but I did not like the hotel/casino

Thanks again.

Death ray is at Vdara, not Aria. (Considering how bland they both are, it's hard to tell the difference.)

Having stayed at the Aria twice this year - I will tell you the restaurants (notably, Javier's and Lemongrass) are outstanding. The pit staff and dealers were all welcoming and friendly, always rooting for the players. Even when I Wasn't playing, they were all friendly and open to conversing with me. The cocktail waitresses were beautiful and were ready to accommodate drink requests (like my request for Coke Zero - many waitresses stated they would find a bar in the casino that served it and get it for me). The rooms were cleaned twice a day (always great to have fresh towels). I am going to make the Aria my 'go to' hotel in Vegas.

See? Before you went I said I wanted you to win so
you would be upbeat about going back. What do I
want to happen next time you go? I haven't decided
yet..

I've been invited for NYE but the airfare is prohibitively expensive.

Vegas is the last place I'd go on NYE. Its amateur
night, too many kids. Its 3 1/2 months away, anyway.

Here's a list of pools and their hours in Las Vegas.
I have no idea how old it is. Call hotel to verify.

I choose the Tropicana.

I agree. It's a complete gong show. Not worth it unless you are partying in your own suite. And then, you might as well be in a suite somewhere else with a better view.

It lists the Aladdin... that dates it by a good 8 years... maybe longer.

We came out once for NYE and were able to find a good airfare by flying on Dec 31st. Just fyi if you haven't checked that date.
