Greetings!

It is time, once again, to kick off the annual WoV Picks Game as hosted by your favorite Admin and mine, Mission146!

I would suggest that everyone read over the Rules as there have been misstatements, misinterpretations and misunderstandings in the past. If anything in the Rules is unclear, let us please try to address it now rather than in the middle of the game.

I will be sending PM invites over the next five days, apologies if you get more than one, but I'll try to avoid that. You are free to announce you want to play in-thread to receive PM reminders, and you may also play even if you do not receive an invite.

The criteria for receiving an invite is simple:

A.) To have played (and paid if you lost) last year.

B.) To be a Member in good standing with, at least, fifty lifetime posts.

If anyone wants to help with Invites, please PM me.

Rule Changes

For the benefit of those who have played this game before and know the Rules, I'm going to just summarize the changes to the Rules really quick:

1.) My contribution to the winner is now $50 instead of $25. Furthermore, in order to keep players interested, I am offering two consolation prizes:

THE MOST AVERAGE CONSOLATION PRIZE: This will be a prize of $25 to the player who picks the closest to .500. In the event of a tie, the same Rules that adjudicate the winner of a tie in the main game will apply.

THE 'YOU SUCK' CONSOLATION PRIZE: This prize will go the player with the worst record. In the event that the amount of money this player loses to the winner exceeds $25, the $25 can be used to offset the payment to the winner and I would simply pay the winner $75 while this player would owe the balance.

2.) Proper formatting of Picks WILL BE enforced as of Week 3. For the first two weeks, if your Picks are formatted improperly, I will send a return PM acknowledging your Picks, but will convert them to the proper format.

The Rules will be as follows:

Format:

Winner Take All (w/exception)

Participation:

You will not need to announce that you are participating in-thread or via PM in advance. The Lines will be posted on Thursday, September 10th, so simply PM me your picks and you are in the game. You MUST make Week 1 Picks to participate, or participate as of Week 2, but Week 1 shall constitute your, 'Skip,' Week. If you wish to receive a reminder, however, please announce you are playing in-thread.

Rules:

1.) The winner will be determined by having the highest winning percentage. In the event of a tie, the winners will have the option of either splitting the take, or they may agree to PM me a Super Bowl pick prior to the Super Bowl, but after the combatants are known, consisting of the winning team, spread and TD's thrown; the winner will be determined in that order. If two Members PM me the same thing, they will BOTH be asked to change at least one aspect of their picks.

2.) The procedure for this will be that at some point on Thursdays, I will post the point spreads and Over/Unders from one source per week. I will likely use VegasInsider and the Spreads & Over/Unders I post will be constant and may be picked at any time prior to 11:59p.m. EST the Saturday before the game.

3.) Sunday/Monday games will be the only games considered. Every player must pick exactly five winners against the Spread, exactly five Over/Unders, or a combination totalling exactly five.

4.) Players may, "Skip," one week without making any picks, but they don't have to. If a player accidentally fails to submit picks, that will constitute the, "Skip," week.

5.) If a player fails to make picks for more than one week, he/she forfeits and will owe any monies lost to the winner(s).

***Any player missing two weeks will have the option of EITHER forfeiting immediately or accepting a record of 0-5 for the second missed week. If the player misses a third week, the forfeit is automatic.

***If a player forfeits or stops playing, then the record of that player will be locked in place, but the player will not receive any of the prizes.

6.) Picks will be PM'ed to me at any point prior to 11:59p.m. EST Saturday, all picks will be openly posted by me between midnight Sunday and kick-off.

***The exception to this Rule is that I will accept E-Mail Picks from banned Members, but only if they are banned. If you are banned, you can still receive PM's, so I will PM you my E-Mail address.

7.) At some point on Tuesday the picks, results and updated Standings will be posted by yours truly.

8.) CONFIDENCE PICK: You may make one, "Confidence Pick," per week, though you don't have to. Your, "Confidence Pick," must be made expressly clear in your PM. The CONFIDENCE PICK result will count either as two wins or two losses, if made.

PAYS

1.) If you are not the winner, then you will pay $0.10, with a minimum of $1.00, for every one-hundredth of a percentage your winning percentage is off from that of the winner. (i.e., if you batted .000, and the winner picked perfectly, you would owe $100)

2.) In the event that you forfeit the game, your winning percentage is fixed and you must pay accordingly. You are not eligible for consolation prizes if you forfeit or stop playing.

3.) I will not be handling any money other than my own. Everyone participating is on the honor system. I am not responsible for non-payment or under-payment. The winner(s) and loser(s) will be responsible for determining privately and amongst themselves how the transaction is to be handled. The winner(s) may post the name(s) of any loser(s) who has AGREED on a method of payment yet failed to pay the winner within sixty (60) days of said agreement being established.

4.) Just to give this thing +EV, I will be paying the winner $50 within thirty days of the SB being played. I will pay by sending a Money Order. I will be defending the $50 or the consolation prizes, but am incapable of winning any prizes. There will be two consolation prizes, the, "Most Average," will be the player whose record is closest to .500 while, "The 'You Suck,' Consolation Prize," is $25 to the player with the worst record.

TIME

1.) The first Sunday of the Season is September 13th, Lines will be posted on Thursday, September 10th.

Pick Format

I WILL be enforcing a uniform Pick format this year for all Picks after Week 3. For the first two weeks, if you send me Picks that are not in the correct format, I will acknowledge that I have received your Picks by re-sending them to you in the correct format. Since I'm throwing $100 into the prize pool of a game that I cannot win, I don't think I am asking for too much, here.

1.) No Line Breaks

2.) For Spread picks, simply put the team nickname and the spread. (Ex: Bengals +5)

3.) For Over/Unders, simply put the team nickname for EITHER team, and the Over or Under amount. (Ex: Bengals OVER 25)

4.) To designate a Confidence Pick, simply put a hyphen and, "Confidence," after the pick. (Ex: Bengals OVER 25-Confidence)

So, a full set of picks might appear:

Patriots -15
Patriots OVER 52
Jaguars +12
Jaguars UNDER 42
Jets +4-Confidence

Let's have a great time, as always!

Invitations Update #1:

Invitations have been sent to members #-B meeting the criteria for receiving an invitation. I probably won't have time to send any more for the next several hours, though. I'll definitely get these done by 23:59 EST on Monday, so that should be sufficient.

Count me in! I'm looking forward to my third championship.

I'd also like to say that if I win I'll donate the winnings to the other green admins.

10DollarBri, thank you for the kind words about my calculator / grading spreadsheet.

I'm probably in again too.

I'll try to get around to update the calculator this weekend. It appears the rules are the same, and if so the spreadsheet won't need any further modification, other than to update the program with the 2015 schedule. This will be the third year we will be using it. Last year, according to my change log, only two small bugs were found. So it looks like we got all of the kinks out back in 2013. Yay!

Thanks for the invite, but I'm out.

As I've mentioned in prior years, with the exception of a few minor prop bets for the Super Bowl, I have no interest in sports or sports betting. (I generally watch the Super Bowl just for the commercials, but throwing a couple prop bets down helps hold my interest in the game.)

Thanks anyway best of luck to all those participating.

I didn't see the Week 10 "bailout" clause in the rules. Is the previously offered option to forfeit for $25 not available this year?

I forgot to mention that.

It didn't seem necessary anymore because of the consolation prizes. Furthermore, a player can forfeit at any time now and the winning percentage of that player simply becomes fixed.

Greetings!

At this moment, reminders are being sent to anyone who has expressed interest in the game via either PM or in this thread. I have also received a number of Picks already for the first week. I want to say that we should have 20-25 players this year, so I believe that is similar to last year's turnout.

I would also like to mention that, should anyone else have interest in this game and miss the first week, you can jump in on the second week and it would only mean the first week counts as your Skip week.

Unfortunately, I have decided that invitations are mostly ineffective, so I will be changing the invitation parameters next year to players who have previously played the game as well as Members who have joined as of this date (or later) and have at least twenty posts. Thus, if you received an invitation this year and did not play, it is unlikely that you will receive one next year.

I haven't really counted, but I am 99.99% sure there are at least 20 players.

You can play for fun to the extent that you can make Picks in this thread (after Official Picks have been posted) and kind of tally your own winning percentage along. Winners are usually pretty flexible with respect to payment, check, MO, Amazon Gift Card, Paypal, Mail a Prepaid Debit Card, whichever you like.

Everyone's Picks are guesses.

You can play for fun, but please do not post your Picks until the Picks of all players have been posted in the Official Thread. That happens shortly after 23:59 EST on Saturdays, so early Sunday morning, essentially.

I have made some minor changes the programs I wrote last year. You can get the current lines in the same format that Mission148 uses by going to here. Copy all the text (ctr-a, ctr-c in windows). Then go to here, and paste (ctr-p) all the text in the box and click submit. If you did this now, you would get:
Packers (-7) @ Bears (+7) O/U 49
Chiefs (+1) @ Texans (-1) O/U 41
Browns (+3.5) @ Jets (-3.5) O/U 39.5
Colts (-2.5) @ Bills (+2.5) O/U 45
Dolphins (-3.5) @ Redskins (+3.5) O/U 43.5
Panthers (-3) @ Jaguars (+3) O/U 41
Seahawks (-4) @ Rams (+4) O/U 40.5
Saints (+2.5) @ Cardinals (-2.5) O/U 48.5
Lions (+3) @ Chargers (-3) O/U 46
Titans (+3) @ Buccaneers (-3) O/U 41
Bengals (-3) @ Raiders (+3) O/U 43
Ravens (+4.5) @ Broncos (-4.5) O/U 48
Giants (+6) @ Cowboys (-6) O/U 51.5
Eagles (-3) @ Falcons (+3) O/U 55
Vikings (-2.5) @ 49ers (+2.5) O/U 41.5

To compare the current lines to the WoV lines, just click on the compare lines button. If you did this now you would get:
Jets -3 (-3.5)
Jaguars UNDER 41.5 (41)
Cardinals OVER 48 (48.5)
Broncos UNDER 48.5 (48)

The number in parenthesis is the current line.

FWIW, it's pretty easy. Make 5 picks; take either side to beat their line, and/or predict the over/under on a game.

At the end of the NFL season, the person with the highest winning percentage of picks wins. Everybody else pays the winner based on how good their percentage is compared to the winner's. Paypal or whatever to settle up.

Risk is anywhere from a few cents to maybe $30-40 if you totally suck at it for a season's worth of entertainment. Mission is paying a couple consolation prizes this year to further defray the expense of a totally crap season.

Not to push you into something you don't want to do; just to say it's pretty uncomplicated.

What do you mean by "risk"? If someone can lose $40 then they are risking $40.

If you come in second by about a percentage point, you might pay about $1.00. The risk is not calculable at the start, because the winner's win percentage is not known until the end. A rough calculation based on past years is that the winning percentage is around 65-70%, and all the bets are a 50-50 proposition (if you assume that the books have placed the lines correctly), so a lousy season, you could end up around 30% or so. Most people bunch in the middle and end up owing approx. $15-25.

Here's a standings example from mid-2013:

Player / wins / losses / predictions correct percentage / amount owed if the contest ended that day

AyeCarumba 37 20 64.91% -
StrictlyAP 37 23 61.67% $3.25

Thanks for the posts, Babs!

That's all correct. Even if you run badly, the cost usually comes out to between $1-$3 per week if you fail to win as I don't believe anyone has ultimately had to pay more than $40 at the end. At the same time, though, the winner usually gets a decent return.

The main aspect of this game I like is that it tends to make games that you might otherwise not care about interesting if it is a game you picked. So, if you're just channel surfing, or maybe in a restaurant or something and notice the game is on, you actually care to watch it a little.

Greetings!

The Week 1 Picks:

https://wizardofvegas.com/forum/gambling/sports/23587-2015-wov-picks-game-official-thread/#post483260

Have been posted.

If you include me, then we currently have 21 players for this year. We might have a player or two join up next Week and just use this as a Skip week, it's quite hard to tell. Unfortunately, invitations were very ineffective and even those that were sent out the earliest generated very few responses. In fact, the majority of the PM's I did get thanked me for the invite, but did not wish to play.

As I believe I mentioned, I am only inviting previous players and Members with a Joined Date on or after 9/11/2015 for next year's game. The invitations were probably only effective the first time because it was a brand new game, but I do want to make sure any new Members between now and then have the opportunity to know about it without necessarily stumbling across it on the Forums, so I'll invite them.

Also, if you sent me a PM with Picks and I somehow missed it, please let me know in a post here or a PM. It's unlikely, but possible.

Hi Gang,

Below is a link to this year's grading calculator/spreadsheet for this contest.

http://www.edcollins.com/wov_nfl_football_contest_calculator_version_3.0.xlsb

If desired, you can download it and use it grade our picks along with Mission and me each week.

I've already entered this week's picks that Mission posted a short while ago. (Each week, you can just copy and paste them from his forum message directly into the calculator/spreadsheet.)

I've also already entered the contest lines we are using for this week.

All that's left to do is to enter the final scores, as they become known, in the "NFL Lines and Results" worksheet tab and then click the CLICK TO GRADE PICKS button.

Note that you can also click the Grade Button now, before any scores are entered. Clicking early will update the "Player Consensus" worksheet tab, and double checks to make sure that all picks are valid.

And each week of the season you would do the same thing:

Enter the contest lines
Enter everyone's picks (copy and paste them after Mission posts them here)
Click the Grade Picks button to update the Player Consensus and check for possible errors
Enter the final scores of the games.
Click the Grade Picks button to grade the picks.

I've been testing it a bit today and it seems to be working okay.

I didn't get around to thanking you for the offer via PM. NFL isn't my bag (until playoffs...cuz playoffs)...but I watched about 5 or 6 hours of college football today... :-\

Good luck to all those who are playing!

Cant figure out how to play. I will pass but thanks.

Just in case anyone who hasn't joined is still interested. You make your five picks as has been mentioned, then send them via PM to Mission 146 who runs this thing. Check the "official" thread for details.

Shoot!

The Panthers were going to be my CP, but then I decided I didn't want to use it on a favorite. The Raiders, who I thought would win outright, got annihilated. Mcgloin looked unstoppable in the preseason, I thought he'd have a decent game, even against the Bengals D.

Yeah, I get that result every year with the Vikings. And every year they fizzle. Only week 1, but they were dismal last night.

First year I've felt that way, but it's still no less untrue!

Would anybody with Microsoft Excel be kind enough to post this week's Results for me to copy to the Official Thread, please? I don't have Excel, can't seem to convert the thing to Google Sheets, so unless someone is willing to do me this kindness, I'll have to do them by hand.
